Primers are used in many building and renovation jobs. They provide better adhesion of the finishing layers to each other, make the surface more receptive to subsequent layers and at the same time more durable. The choice of composition depends on the type of work and the surface to be treated.

For example, there are two types of water-dispersion soils:

  • deep penetration primer;
  • strengthening primer.

The main difference between them is the size of the binder particles. The deep penetration primer has particles 10 times smaller than in strengthening formulations. Thanks to this, it easily penetrates through the micropores of materials, impregnating the base to a depth of up to 10 cm. At the entire penetration depth, the particles stick together, increasing the strength of the materials. Reinforcing soils interact only with surface layers.

How to distinguish different types of soils

The deep penetration primer looks like a hazy solution,while the firming composition is white in color and looks like milk. It's just that in reinforcing impregnations, large binder particles do not let light through, so determining the type is enough to look at the color and type of solution. solid content: deep penetration primer contains from 10 to 12% (indicated on the package), if the figures are higher, then you have a strengthening composition. Well, you can distinguish the type of composition by the appearance of the base after processing. If a shiny film remains on the surface, then this is a binding or strengthening primer, if changes are not noticeable on the surface, then the composition is penetrating (the color may only change slightly).

These compositions have a different scope: a deep penetration primer is applied to low-absorbent substrates (brick, drywall, etc.) under a multi-layer finish (plaster, tile, etc.). It is advisable to use cheaper reinforcing compounds for painting or wallpapering if they are finished with plastered or painted with water-dispersion paint walls. That is, you can save money on simpler work using a reinforcing solution, and for more complex multi-layer finishes, you need to use expensive penetrating compounds.

After treatment with this composition, the base becomes stronger and more uniform, itsadhesive properties. Surfaces are less susceptible to corrosion and fungal diseases, their water-absorbing capacity decreases, and the influence of external factors decreases. After the first treatment, the surface dries for 1-3 hours at a temperature of 17-24оС, the second layer will take a little longer to dry.

For the treatment of walls and ceilings, screeds and self-leveling floors, plasters and foam concrete walls, brickwork and concrete bases - a deep penetration primer is suitable for all these surfaces. Its consumption depends on the absorbency of the substrate and averages 80-150 g/m3. In a single coat, 10 liters of primer is enough to treat 100m3 of a surface with low absorbency.
