The seventeenth century was marked by the fact that buffets acquired the appearance that has come down to us. Even then, the kitchen sideboard kept expensive dishes for the meal, it could be silver or porcelain utensils. It is noteworthy that before the sideboard became so functional, it consisted of shelves on which dishes were also stored. Only over time, they began to add cabinets and a table top, which were intended for something.
Translated from Latin, the word "buffet" means "dandy table", "brilliant", which, in fact, reflects the essence of its purpose. It was this kitchen furniture that reflected the we alth of the family, or at least served as a place where all the most expensive and valuable things were exhibited.
For example, the French, who were the progenitors of the modern appearance of the buffet, kept their homemade grape wine in a locker, the Germans put beer mugs and decorative vases in the buffet, but the Slavs considered it their duty to put a samovar, a teapot or a basin there for jam. As a result, the exhibited items were not only an indicator of we alth, but also decorative elements that adorned andennobled the appearance of the room.
Buffets for the kitchen and their appearance
A classic sideboard for the kitchen is a massive cabinet with opaque doors, and above it is a cabinet that also has doors, but they can be glass or stained glass (depending on the style of the room or the sideboard itself). They are connected by a wooden wall that is attached to the backs of both cabinets, and the top of the floor stand can serve as a tabletop on which dishes or vases of flowers or fruit are placed.
The material for such furniture is wood, usually of expensive varieties, decorated with carvings and various patterns that can even be burned on wooden doors and along the border of the cabinet. However, for modern interiors, such products can be made from less expensive and massive materials, for example, from chipboard or fiberboard. It is worth noting that, if necessary, the sideboard can be artificially aged with paint or made using the crackle technique. Here, of course, everything depends on the wishes of the customer or the style of the room in which the buffet will stand.
Buffet and interior
You can choose your buffet for each interior. So, country or eco-style involves a sideboard for the kitchen made of natural wood, which will not be varnished. It can consist of various sizes of cabinets and shelves.
For a modern-style kitchen, a sideboard is suitable, which will be made of plastic or acrylic. Tinted glass can be used as decoration. You can also use notthe whole buffet set, but its lower part, which is called the serving buffet.
Of course, to put such beauty in the kitchen or dining room, you have to pay a tidy sum, but there is an opportunity to save. Buffets can be purchased at flea markets or online antique auctions. They are also not cheap there, but still less than in stores, and the quality of the materials will be better, especially if you decide to purchase a wooden exhibit.
You can look for such a piece of furniture from your grandmother or her friends. The resulting buffet can be put in order, cleaned, painted or artificially aged. And now you will have a masterpiece of almost handmade work in your kitchen or dining room, which is valued much more than the thing you buy. After all, a sideboard for the kitchen made by you will bring a piece of soul and creativity to your interior.
