Video: How Do Hot Melt Adhesives Work? 2024, November

Not a single furniture production can do without special adhesives that would ensure high-quality adhesion of parts during assembly. It is for these purposes that hot melt adhesive is used, which is a solid granule that acquires a viscous state when heated and quickly hardens when cooled.

Composition

The properties of this material are provided by special components in the composition. Most often adhesive materials are made on the basis of vinyl acetate and ethylene copolymer.

This combination gives the product:

  • adhesion strength;
  • good viscosity;
  • cohesive strength;
  • ideal compatibility with other materials.

In order to further improve the properties of the product, the hot melt adhesive may also contain various:

  • fillers;
  • modifiers;
  • plasticizers;
  • antioxidants.

All this gives the final material better surface wettability, increased elasticity, less shrinkage, low thermal degradation and much more.

Features of choice

In order for the hot melt adhesive for the edge to be ideal, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the materials forpanel cladding. If only certain types of edges are often used in production, then only hot melt adhesive recommended for such products should be used. In the case of using different types of edges with the same frequency, you should choose a universal adhesive that is suitable for any material.

Consumers are also offered filled and unfilled adhesives. The latter are cheaper and often attract attention, but their density is much higher, which means that the consumption during application will be large. As a result, cheapness does not justify itself. There are situations when such adhesives are still necessary, since they fill the deep layers of chipboard well.

Design Features

Also, when choosing, you should pay attention to the features of the glue itself. Material supplied in rod form does not require complete melting to work. It is applied to the parts, gradually melting from one edge, thereby improving the quality of gluing. PVC edging and EVA hot melt adhesive can also be joined in a different pattern, often used for complex structures. This option involves applying glue in a liquid state to the edge, after which it is delivered to the consumer. Further, for cladding, the adhesive should be re-melted with hot air and combined with other parts. At the same time, the speed of work is rather low, but the consumption of glue is also low, due to which all kinds of defects in the porous structure of the gluing parts are eliminated.

Parts Storage Conditions

While working, avoidpossible accumulation of moisture between the parts and the adhesive, so all edges and furniture parts can only be put into operation directly from a warm warehouse. In the case of their cold state, moisture condenses on the cooled edges and impairs the adhesion of parts to the adhesive.

Operating temperature

In order for hot melt adhesive to be able to provide a perfect bond, you need to work with it only at certain temperatures. Usually the units are able to provide the desired performance, but under certain conditions the temperatures can be lowered.

For example, when:

  • the presence of a burnt layer of glue in the tank;
  • low speed adhesive supply to the place of application
  • working with cold parts.

Nuances of application

To ensure optimal adhesion, the layer of applied adhesive must be of the correct thickness. Too much glue will squeeze out the edges when pressed, but will provide better adhesion. A small amount of the composition will not lead to contamination of the working surfaces, but will not be able to provide the proper degree of bonding. After applying the material, the parts are immediately sent to the clamp, which is carried out by a steel press with smooth rollers.

Modern materials

Today, the best hot melt adhesive for PVC from polyurethane materials is considered. This composition has collected all the advantages of conventional and reaction products. Polyurethane adhesive is able to harden not only under physical influences of temperatures, but also under chemical ones. Speci althe isoacites in the adhesive structure cross-link under the influence of moisture, thereby transforming the composition into a three-dimensional bonding structure.

Complete hardening of such a product takes several days, but it all depends on external factors:

  • moisture parts and environment;
  • part and ambient temperatures;
  • chemical composition of the glue.

Storage of adhesives of any composition should take place strictly in dry enclosed spaces at certain temperatures, since under the influence of adverse conditions the material loses its properties. If moisture gets on the adhesive, it becomes unusable. Once the adhesive has fully solidified, its resistance is observed in the temperature range from -30 to +150 degrees.
