Sometimes the usual repair in the apartment is not enough. Many owners are trying to give the interior some kind of feature. Some buy expensive furniture, others seek advice from designers. But there is one idea that will make the interior of any room unique. It's a coffee table from an engine block. This furniture looks very original. But how to get such a coffee table from the engine? You can buy ready-made, but it costs fabulous money. The way out is to make a similar design with your own hands.
What to use as a basis?
So, the most basic part that we need to create a table from the engine (there is a photo of examples of work in this article) is a cylinder block. Which block to take does not matter, since only aesthetics are important to us, even a non-working mechanism can be used. It will be cheaper, and it will not be displayed on the design. The motor can be anything. If the budget is limited, you can take a block of an ordinary domestic passenger car. More expensive solutionthe use of V-shaped blocks from jeeps or business class cars. But the most extraordinary option is a table from a truck engine block. It can be an eight- or twelve-cylinder engine. But such a craft is already many times more expensive. You can make a table of different types. It can be bar or magazine. The latter option is more popular and simple, so we will consider it first.
What needs to be prepared?
For the operation, we should prepare:
- Goggles.
- Mittens.
- Gloves.
- Detergent.
- Lots of clean rags.
- Sandblaster.
- Metal brush.
- Rust converter.
- Pulverizer.
- Car enamel.
- Solvent.
- Primer for metal.
- Drill.
- M8 and M12 taps.
- Die M12.
- Metal saw.
- Welding machine.
- Epoxy.
You will also need glass for the table. It should be transparent, with finished edges. It is recommended to use glass with a thickness of about one centimeter for the coffee table.
What else do you need?
In addition to the above items, we should also purchase:
- Cylinder block itself (in-line or V-shaped).
- Furniture wheels. It is important that they are calculated for the mass of the selected block.
- Metal feet for mounting the unit.
- Chrome-plated pipe with a diameter of 12 millimeters. Lengthpipes - about 40 centimeters.
- Threaded washers with a diameter of 12 millimeters.
- Fasteners. These are furniture castor bolts, hex bolts and nuts.
- LED pendant with power supply.
- Cord and plug.
Getting Started
If the work is being done for the first time, you can take as a basis a simple 4-cylinder block from the VAZ-2101-07 engine. Pistons and connecting rods, if any, should be removed from it. The part of the motor where the cylinders used to be will be the top of the table. It will show through transparent glass.
We put on the grip, gloves and mittens. We need to put the block in order. It usually contains oil and gasoline residues. You will need a large amount of rags and solvent. We wipe all the places of the block and even the insides. At the end of the cleaning work, it is advisable to rinse it again with detergent, and then rinse everything with water.
Often there is rust on old VAZ blocks. Here we need a converter and a brush for metal. The transducer contains an acid that corrodes corrosion. But not all sites will be ideal. Therefore, having cleaned all the corrosion spots, the block should be sandblasted.
Pay attention! Work with the rust converter must be done with rubber gloves. The composition is very toxic and corrosive to the skin.
Next, degrease the block with a solvent. After you can start priming. The primer will ensure good adhesion of the paint to the metal of the block. It is advisable to choose the compositionunder the color of the paint. You can apply from a can or from a spray bottle.
Waiting for the primer to dry. Next, we apply paint. It is advisable to choose enamel with imitation of chrome or silver. And the holes for the cylinders can be treated with golden paint. Enamel is applied in two or three layers. Each previous one must dry beforehand. The first layer should be developing. That is, you need to apply paint from a long distance. Usually a spray gun or spray can is first held at a distance of thirty centimeters.
After painting, we proceed to the installation of auxiliary elements. We fasten the stainless steel legs with M8 bolts. Using a drill with a drill of 7.5 millimeters, we drill a hole in the block for fastening the legs. We cut the thread with an M8 tap. You need to attach the leg with at least two bolts. Furniture wheels are attached to the end of the products. Don't skimp on the latter. They must withstand the entire load - the block, glass and parts that will be on the table.
Now we need to work on the LED backlight. Do not be lazy to install it - it gives the design an even more unique look. It is necessary to mount the tape so that the holes for the cylinders are illuminated from the inside. A ribbon of cold tones - blue or purple - will look especially impressive. We also need a power supply, a cord and an electrical plug. We feed the tape from a 220 volt network, and then 12 volts will go through the converter. Fix the tape inside the case with epoxy glue. Next, a cord with a plug is brought out to the network.
At the next stage, using a saw for metal, we cut off the heads of the bolts underM12 hexagon and weld the M6 connecting nuts with a welding machine. We twist the bolts with nuts vertically into the technological holes of the cylinder block. Next, they need to put on pieces of chrome pipe. We cut the latter into four parts (each ten centimeters long). We cover the upper part of our holders with washers with a diameter of 12 millimeters. They need to be fixed with the same epoxy glue.
Finish stage
Now we need to attach the glass to the holders. You will need epoxy again. By the way, the upper part of the glass can be decorated by applying any pattern using a sandblaster. That's it, our design is ready.
A simplified version of the engine table
If you don't want to bother, you can just make a table with comfortable legs, without wheels. But in this case, the design will not turn out so mobile. And it will be difficult to move it, since the glass can be damaged. Therefore, additional holders must be installed under it.

How to make this type of table out of an engine? To do this, you need to have:
- Cylinder block.
- Millimeter thick glass.
- Metal rods 50 centimeters long. Diameter - 12 millimeters, quantity - 8 pieces.
- Furniture wheels and bolts for them (16 pieces).
- 8 nuts M6.
- Rubber washers in the amount of 8 pieces. The diameter, as in the previous case, is 12 millimeters.
For this type of table, you need to take a V-engine - other options will not work. This is the only way we can hide bottles of drinks in cylinders. Ideally, a V-6 block for a table from the engine is suitable. Highlighting is not necessary, because the emphasis will be on alcohol.
Please note that furniture wheels are not suitable for heavy blocks where 8 or 12 cylinders. In such a situation, it is better to use stationary legs.
Prepare the block in the same way:
- Oil washing.
- Removing rust.
- Priming.
- Beautiful.
You can choose the same colors - silver or chrome. Next, we mount the furniture wheels on the bottom of the block. If there are no technological holes in it, we drill them with a drill and cut the thread with an M12 die. We place the rod at an angle to the vertical axis of the block. We cut the upper part for installing glass at the right angle. To fix the rods, we also drill holes and cut the threads with an M12 tap. Nuts are welded to the upper ends of the rods. The latter must lie in the same plane in order to be able to install the glass further.
12mm washers are attached to the top of the nuts. The latter are fixed with epoxy glue. Glass is also fixed to the washers with the help of glue. This work can be considered finished.
Tip
Sometimes it's cheaper to buy a used, understaffed engine than the block itself. In addition, you can then sell unnecessary parts. This is the crankshaftpistons, connecting rods, rings and other mechanisms.
