In the process of repair, it is often necessary to replace interior doors. New models will harmoniously fit into the interior, will become an ornament of design. You can install such structures yourself. To do this, you need to read the step-by-step instructions, consider the advice of experts on the correct installation of interior doors. This procedure will be discussed in detail later.
Varieties of doors
Installation of interior doors (photos illustrating some stages of the process are presented below) is a responsible event.
In order to do everything right, you should consider all the nuances of this process. We offer a wide range of interior doors for sale. Such products are made from different materials. Most often it is natural wood, MDF and chipboard. Each variety has certaincharacteristics.
If it is a fiberboard door, its frame is made of wood. It is covered with sheets of presented material. Fiberboard is covered with a layer of special laminate, which creates a certain decorative effect. The advantage of this type of door is its low cost. Budget designs weigh a little, which makes it easy to transport them home from the store. During installation, there are also no problems, since you can mount a structure with a small weight yourself. One more advantage of doors from a chipboard is a wide model range. You can choose a model for different interior styles.
The correct installation of interior doors with your own hands is carried out in several stages. When using a chipboard model, you need to act very carefully. It is quite easy to damage the canvas. Also, this material is not sufficiently resistant to high humidity, so such models are not installed in the bathroom, in the kitchen. In this case, the door may warp. Chipboard doors are more suitable for dry rooms. If there are small children in the house, they may accidentally break such a door during outdoor games.
In the course of the production of such products, MDF is also actively used. This material is stronger than chipboard, so the doors can withstand small to medium impacts. Also, MDF is resistant to moisture, has a higher level of sound insulation. But the cost of such a design will be an order of magnitude higher than that of chipboard.
Proper installation of interior doors in a doorway requires accurate measurements. Least likely to damage the structure whenusing natural wood. These are durable products that complement different interior styles well. The cost of models made of natural wood is the highest. Moreover, the price depends on the type of wood. Some varieties of such structures complement the author's interiors. They are combined with classic, modern, eco-style, ethnic style.
Other types of doors are also on sale. They are used much less frequently. For example, it can be a tempered glass door, plastic, steel, etc. They are not widely used.
Types of door frames
One of the important points during installation is the correct installation of the interior door frame. They can also be different. The quality of the door frame determines how durable the entire structure will be. They can also be divided into three main types.
If the box is made of chipboard, it looks pretty decent, but it will only fit doors made of the same material. Such a design will not withstand significant weight, so the door leaf should be light. When using this type of product, the correct installation of the interior door frame will extend its life. It is worth considering that the chipboard structure can sag in the center under its own weight. It is not recommended to choose such boxes if the door leaf is made of MDF or wood.
The box can be made from raw wood. Its price is on onelevel with chipboard, but the differences between these two varieties are significant. Dry profiled timber, from which such wooden platbands are made, has high strength and resistance to mechanical damage. Therefore, it is better to choose a box from this material. Subsequently, it will be necessary to finish the timber.
Another type of box is the construction of laminated wood. This option makes installation easier. The material does not require additional finishing. But here it is extremely important to pay attention to the quality of lamination. If, during the processing of wood, thin paper was used to create the top decorative layer, the appearance of the box will quickly lose its original qualities. Scuffs, cracks and scratches will appear.
Experts say that sometimes it is better to give preference to a box made of raw wood. Self-covering it with a layer of paint, you can ensure a long service life of the structure.
Even during the correct installation of the interior door frame, small gaps may appear in the opening, which are blown out with mounting foam. In this case, you will need to additionally install additional trims, platbands. These structural elements are purchased after the installation of the door.
Materials and tools
To do everything right, you need to consider the step-by-step instructions for installing an interior door - it is quite possible to do the entire amount of work with your own hands. As an example, it is worth considering the installation of a chipboard structure. This is more difficult work. If ayou can install doors made of MDF or wood, the work is carried out in the same way. Only the master will be more likely to do everything correctly, since such structures are less susceptible to mechanical stress. It is much more difficult to damage a canvas made of MDF or wood than chipboard.
Which tool is used to install interior doors? This question is asked by masters who perform such a task for the first time. Both hand and power tools will be needed.
You need to prepare a saw, which can be manual or electric. It is much easier and faster to work with an electric jigsaw, so this option is preferable. In the course of work, you need an electric drill with wood drills. The size of the removable elements should be 3 and 4 mm. We also need drills for concrete 4 and 6 mm.
Besides this, you need a screwdriver and wood screws. You should also purchase dowels for quick installation. Measurements are taken with a tape measure. To check the position of the structure, a building level is used. It can be the simplest, bubble. Also need construction foam.
You need to choose a suitable handle for the door, and also pay attention to the door closing mechanism. The easiest way is to install magnetic locks, but if you wish, you can cut a handle with a conventional mechanism that is manually operated into the canvas. Some handle designs have a lock.
If a raw wood box is used, you need to buy antiseptic, fire retardant, wood primer and paint or varnish. You can give the wood the desired shade with a stain.
General Installation Recommendations
There are several recommendations regarding the correct installation of interior doors in the doorway. The whole procedure involves installing the box with screws. After its installation, a small distance remains between the structure and the opening, which is blown out with mounting foam. Next, install the door leaf on the hinges. Unseemly places are covered with platbands. You can set the threshold and, if necessary, extensions.
One of the most important stages in the preparatory work is the measurement of the opening. It is worth considering that designs with standard dimensions are on sale. This allows you to correctly select the size of the structure in accordance with the opening.
How to measure the interior door for installation? This indicator is indicated by the manufacturer in the technical documentation. You will need to measure the opening directly. This procedure is performed using a conventional tape measure. First, the distance of both sides from the floor is measured. It is not recommended to determine the length of only one side of the opening. This result on the opposite side may differ.
It must also be taken into account that a threshold can be installed at the bottom. It is best to choose the design of the opening in the form of the letter "P". If desired, it will be possible to install a flat bar. If the height difference between the two rooms is significant, this must be taken into account when choosing the size.designs.
Experts recommend measuring the doorway more than once, performing the procedure at least 3 times. If the readings match, you can go to the store to buy a door. Otherwise, you will either have to expand the opening or reduce it. This will result in additional costs, may affect the strength of the structure.
Step 1. Box assembly
Begin assembly by installing the interior door frame. The purchased structure must have loops. In the door leaf, the manufacturer must provide for a cutout for mounting the handle and lock. It is necessary to fit all parts of the box under the doorway. Factory designs are produced with a margin of 5 cm.
It is best to collect all the pieces of the box on the floor. The metal elements of the hinges should be directed upwards. A door leaf will subsequently be hung on them. You need to immediately determine in which direction it will open. If the door is installed in a small room, for example, in a bathroom, pantry, it is better that it opens inward. In other cases, you need to decide, given the layout, the location of objects in the room.
Each plan is applied to the opening, cutting off the excess. First, mount the top bar on the screws. Before that, you need to drill holes. The diameter of the screws is quite large 3.5 mm. So that they do not damage the structure of the chipboard, you need to pre-drill the holes with a 3 mm drill. Otherwise, the box may crack during the assembly process. For the same reason, places wherescrews will be driven into the walls, should be closer to the center. Do not place them close to edges or corners. To fix the bar, drive in 4 self-tapping screws, 2 on each side.
To assemble the structure on the floor, you need to put a soft cloth under it so that the laminated layer is not damaged, the surface is not covered with scratches, scuffs.
In the course of the correct installation of interior doors with your own hands, you need to cut off the factory stock. It is necessary to measure the length of the box again on both sides. The result obtained is transferred to the surface. It is necessary to take into account the gap, for which 1-2 cm are subtracted from the result obtained. This is necessary for further foaming of the box.
If chipboard construction is used, it is cut with a hand saw. A jigsaw is more suitable for natural wood. As a result of these manipulations, a U-shaped structure is obtained. It is completely ready for subsequent installation.
Step 2. Box installation
Considering the instructions for the correct installation of interior doors, you need to pay attention to the installation of the box. The finished structure is installed in the doorway. It is leveled. After pre-fixing the structure in the opening, put the door leaf on the hinges. If everything is done correctly, the sash should close easily. When skewed, it will rub against the edge of the box or on the floor.
Having aligned the structure, it must be fixed with self-tapping screws. To do this, the decorative end plate will need to be removed. Further in the design, which remains in the opening, drill holes. On each side there should be at least 7-8 pieces. The distance between the screws should be 25-30 cm.
First, a wood drill is installed in the drill chuck. Having made through holes in the chipboard, you need to change the tool. Now you need to install a drill bit for concrete. Before starting to create holes in concrete, the position of the door frame is checked again with a level. It may shift.
Next, you can start drilling holes in the wall. They will have a diameter of 6 mm. To do this, through the box you need to make marks with a pencil. It is impossible to drill concrete through the box, so it is removed from the opening. Having fixed a drill bit for concrete with a diameter of 6 mm in the cartridge, you need to drill holes in the wall.
If the house is built of brick, you need to drill holes in solid brick, not in masonry joints. Otherwise, the dowels will not hold firmly. Their plastic parts are installed in prepared holes. Next, the box is installed in the opening. With the help of self-tapping screws, the structure is fixed. For this, it is recommended to use a screwdriver. This way the work will move faster.
The screws must not be screwed tightly, otherwise the box may bend. In the process of carrying out such work, you need to constantly check the position of the box.
With proper installation of interior doors, there should be no distortions. This is checked using a level from the side of the room.
Step 3. Installing the door leaf on the hinges
Proper installation of interior doors involves blowing the openingmounting foam. This can be done only after installing the canvas on the hinges. Since it is made of chipboard, there will be no difficulties. This is a lightweight material, so almost every craftsman can handle this job.
The door is put on hinges, and then they check how it opens and closes. Next, you need to check the gaps between the box and the sash. When closed, they are about 3 mm.
Step 4. Trim installation
Next is the installation of platbands on interior doors. It is necessary to blow out the opening with foam. There is a small space between the box and the wall. It is blown out with foam only when the door is hinged. During the blowing process, this material expands in volume. Therefore, you can not overdo it with the amount of foam. It can, expanding, pull out the screws. In this case, the box will bend, and the door will stop closing. In this case, you will have to buy a new box and reinstall.
Gaps need to be laid before foaming. In general, this work is not difficult. You need to start with vertical seams from the bottom up. It is important to control the filling volume. It is necessary to fill 1/3 of the space between the box and the opening. The foam will expand as it solidifies. You need to foam the space and leave it for a day. In 24 hours, the mass will dry well. The room must be warm. The temperature must be at least 20ºС.
In the process of proper installation of platbands on interior doors, excess foam is cut off with a knife. Further, these places are closed with platbands using self-tapping screws. If the opening is wide, in addition to the platbands, they also installextras.
Step 5. Fitting installation
Next, the handle is installed in the interior door. The sash usually provides a seat for fittings. If not, you need to prepare it yourself. 6 cm recede from the edge of the door and make a mark. You also need to make a mark on the side edge.
The owners determine the height of the handle on their own. Standardly, this distance is from 90 to 120 cm. With a chisel in the dock part of the door, a recess of 3 mm is hollowed out. Its center is preliminarily marked with an awl.
A hole is drilled on the sash using a crown with a diameter of 50 mm. This must be done on both sides. Otherwise, the top decorative layer may be damaged. When the hole is ready, a hole is created with a drill with a diameter of 23-24 mm in the center of the side recess. It should not be through.
A latch is inserted into the side recess. It is screwed on with screws. Then remove the upper part of the handle, for which there is a hole in the design on the side. To do this, using a special key or other thin object, press the latch in this recess. Then you can easily remove the upper part of the structure.
Removing the decorative trim, you can see the places for fasteners. Further, a handle is inserted into the prepared seat, and on the other hand, its part with slots for screws. Both parts are pulled together by screwing the fasteners with a screwdriver. Then a decorative overlay is put on, the body of the handle. The inner tongue is pressed again so that the upper partstructure firmly fixed in place.
On the reverse side, mark the place where the tongue of the pen rests. Here a recess is created into which a decorative pocket is inserted. It is covered with a decorative strip and screwed on.
Step 6. Magnetic lock
Much easier to install a magnetic lock. In this case, the handle will not have a swivel mechanism. Proper installation of a magnetic lock in interior doors involves creating small recesses for both halves of the structure. It is important to correctly correlate them in height. Therefore, the part with the convex element is first screwed on, and then it is determined where the pocket will be. With the help of screws, all parts are screwed in the places provided for them.
