Drywall is a building material that is gaining popularity in the market every year. This is due to its properties - accessibility, practicality, versatility. And on top of that, drywall is very easy to work with. If during the renovation of the apartment the idea came to add an interior partition or an arched opening, then this will be the most optimal material. With it, you can even align the ceilings and walls. And there is no need to talk about the design at all - you can safely experiment with unusual elements.
What is drywall?
Gypsum board sheet, or, as it is often called, drywall, is a dense construction cardboard, the parts of which are pressed together. Between the two parts of the cardboard is a layer of gypsum solution and filler. The thickness of the GKL is different, the choice depends on the specific purpose of the purchase.
Advantages of drywall over other materials
- Practical. The sheet itself has a perfectly flat surface, so it allows you to apply any finish - tiles, wallpaper, paint. If there are any irregularities or defects on the ceiling or walls, the GKL will fix everything.
- Safe. If you do not take into account the fact that this building material does not consist entirely of environmentally friendly materials, you can focus on safety - GKL has a fire resistance function, which is why it is so valued in decoration.
- Universal. If some unusual design of plasterboard ceilings is planned (photos are attached to the article), then GKL is what any builder needs. This material is easy to process: it is easy to cut, it can be painted, pasted over. Everything will turn out beautifully and aesthetically. The most popular option is to imitate a natural material such as wood or brick.
- Available. Despite the fact that GKL is in great demand, the prices for it are quite pleasant. If necessary, you can find the required sheet size, and this is at least convenient.
Flaws
This material also has several disadvantages:
- Moisture resistant. If neighbors live in the apartment above, who always make a flood, then drywall will have to be abandoned. At the first leak, the building material will lose its properties.
- Unrepairable. There are situations when sheets are damaged during transportation or during work. So, for example, a panel or rails can be restored, but a whole drywall with defects must be completely changed.
Types of GKL ceilings
There are many design options for plasterboard ceilings. But all ceilings from this building material are divided into only three types: suspended, single-level and multi-level. The choice will depend on the space itself.
Single-level ceilings
This type of GKL construction is used in cases where the main ceiling has visible defects that need to be hidden. The advantages of such a ceiling is that you can even mount it yourself. The main thing is to have the necessary tools. But the single-level design has one drawback - the impossibility of creating an unusual and original plasterboard ceiling design. However, if the apartment or house already has a certain style, then the ceiling can be pasted over with themed photo wallpapers or simply painted. Also, the restraint of such a design can be compensated for by properly selected lighting.
Single-level ceiling is ideal for low rooms. The volume of the room is practically not taken, so the space does not seem "pressing".
To mount such a structure, an aluminum frame is initially assembled (but other material can also be used), after which it is fixed to the main part of the ceiling. The finished base must be sheathed with GKL, as a result of which a perfectly flat surface is created. It remains only for the design of plasterboard ceilings (photo attached) to install the backlight.
Multilevel ceilings
Multilevel ora multi-level ceiling is a ceiling in which there are height differences made using frames as part of a design solution.
High rooms, which have a lot of free space, go well with multi-level plasterboard ceilings. It opens up the opportunity to experiment with different design options and style any style.
The design of plasterboard ceilings can be very different. Multi-level structures can be divided into several types:
- Zone. This means that with the help of ceiling levels, a certain place or zone in the room is allocated. For this, techniques such as elevation changes, different colors, and a “play” of illumination are used. Thanks to them, several work areas can be created in the room.
- Diagonal. In detail, a neat arc or diagonal looms on the ceiling with the help of GKL, which visually divides the space. Diagonal does not mean a straight oblique at all, you can embody absolutely any line.
- Framework. Drywall allows you to create a so-called "box" on the ceiling, which resembles a frame structure. Visually, it seems that the whole room is enclosed in boundaries. As a lighting solution, a large chandelier can be placed in the center of the ceiling.
- Composite. If the interior design is made in some complex style, for example, the Middle Ages, then you can use the GKL to create an arched structure. But it is worth noting that this option will cost a pretty penny.
Multi-level ceiling coverings are very often used in the interior of a nurseryrooms.
When designing drywall ceilings, two levels are most often preferred. At the same time, the whole appearance of the room is completely changed. If the room is high enough, then you can go ahead and choose three or even four levels. It will look gorgeous, but you will have to involve an experienced designer in the development. And if the project is not limited by funds, then there is room for imagination - gloss, gold plating, etc.
But no matter how much you want to make your interior unusual and memorable, if the room is small, it is recommended to limit yourself to one level, otherwise such a ceiling will create additional bulkiness. If the apartment is of a standard type and does not stand out in size, then a two-level construction made of plasterboard is well suited. And if you beat it with lighting devices, you get just a feast for the eyes. And most importantly - inexpensive. This option is popular with average families.
Smooth curves and lines - the best pattern for a two-level ceiling. At the same time, the overall decor of the room must be combined with the sinuous patterns on the ceiling.
The main advantage of a multi-level design is the possibility of dividing a room into several work areas without the use of special partitions or walls. It is enough to purchase a few additional lamps.
Gypsum board suspended ceiling design
This kind of plasterboard ceiling is notable only for the method of attachment. Single-level and multi-level ceilings differ in that they practically do not occupyspace, and the room does not lose in volume. And the suspended ones capture about 200 mm of the entire space. Because of this, if you make several levels, the ceiling height differences will be at least this indicator. Therefore, only owners of sufficiently large apartments or houses can afford to install suspended plasterboards.
The main advantage of the suspended structure is the ease of repair. Due to the fastening features, you can easily pull out the damaged sheet and replace it with a new one.
The second advantage is that there is a large distance between the main part of the ceiling and the suspension system. Of course, for owners of a small room, this is more of a disadvantage, but if the suspended ceiling is used for its intended purpose, then this turns into a plus. The free distance can be filled with wires from lighting devices at the designer's pointer so as not to spoil the view.
If it suddenly occurs to the owner after the repair is completed to add a couple more additional lamps, then they can be easily installed, and the wiring can be placed in the free space between the two frames.
GKL ceiling design in different rooms
Depending on the purpose of the room, plasterboard ceilings allow you to create a unique design for each. The material can be used in almost any room. Consider each room separately.
Kitchen and dining room
When designing a plasterboard ceiling in the kitchen, the specifics of the room should be taken into account. Here you can not use gloss or gold plating, otherwise all the fat will smoothly be onceiling, and it will be impossible to wash it without damaging the entire layout.
It is very difficult to decide on the interior when the room combines two functions - cooking and eating. That is, both the kitchen and the dining room should turn out in one “face”. In such cases, it is better to contact the designer. Using a two-level ceiling and lighting, you can separate the cooking area from the eating area. You will get two working areas with clear boundaries.
The above method is applicable only if the space itself is not small. If the kitchen itself is not large enough, the best option would be one level, but with the allocation of geometric shapes, such as a large diamond over the cooking area and a large square above the table. This is done very simply - the selected figure is cut out of the GKL and painted to match the interior. It remains only to fix it on the ceiling. Small spotlights are suitable as lighting fixtures. Instead of painting, even photo wallpapers can be used.
Hall or living room
The design of the ceiling in the living room of drywall can be very different. Most often, it is made using geometric shapes (square, oval, rhombus, rectangle and even triangle).
A big role in the design of the ceiling in the living room of plasterboard plays a color composition. To make the room seem even larger in space, preference is given to cold tones, and if the room is too large, warm colors will help it visually.decrease.
If the room is too large, when designing a plasterboard ceiling for the hall, in addition to multi-level and suspended structures, it is recommended to use adjustable local lighting. For example, it can be spotlights located in different parts of the room.

Bedroom
A person entering the bedroom aims for a comfortable rest. Therefore, massive awards on the ceiling are completely useless. Designers are advised to create a cozy atmosphere in the bedroom with the help of several levels, presented in the form of smooth lines and curves. If multi-level structures were chosen for the design of the ceiling in the plasterboard bedroom, then we must not forget that the area should be allocated strictly above the bed. Moreover, everything should be done in calm colors, without bright contrasting spots. The lighting should be soft and the colors warm. If the bedroom does not allow you to deploy several levels, a single-level ceiling is used, but with a frame frame.
