The interior of the kitchen largely depends on the ceiling. After all, its design can negate all the beauty of the room. And it can give elegance and add practicality. Suspended ceiling in the kitchen is a great option for this room. This design has stood the test of time. In addition, it is not difficult to install it yourself.
Design features
The suspended ceiling in the kitchen (photos in the article allow you to get acquainted with excellent interior designs) consists of two elements:
- A frame made of metal, which is fixed on the floors.
- Modular parts. Of these, in fact, the ceiling surface consists.
Between the main surface and the new ceiling base, various communications and lighting fixtures can easily fit. It is very convenient and practical. Because of this, the false ceiling is called a fake structure.
Modular parts come in many forms: plates, cassettes, rails, panels. And they are made:
- from glass and mineralfiber;
- steel and aluminum;
- reinforced gypsum and drywall;
- wood;
- plastic;
- Fibreboard, MDF, DSP;
- laminate.
Main advantages
False ceiling in the kitchen has many advantages:
- It perfectly masks the old coating and bumps.
- Wiring and other utilities are securely hidden. However, they are easily accessible. Therefore, if necessary, they can be changed without problems.
- The ceiling is quickly mounted.
- Materials are available and relatively inexpensive.
- The design makes the room brighter by improving the dispersion of light from electrical appliances. And if the surface of the ceiling is glossy, then it also reflects daylight.
Varieties of designs
The following types of suspended kitchen ceilings are distinguished:
- panel;
- cellular;
- cassette;
- lattice;
- rack;
- tiled.
Very popular false ceiling in the kitchen of the panels. The tiled surface is also in great demand. This is a simple design. First, a frame is prepared, on which panels painted white are put on. Then, if desired, they can be repainted in any shade.
Of course, it is not necessary to stick to classic designs. You may want to do photo printing on glass. These options look pretty interesting.
Benefits of Plasterboard Kitchen Ceilings
Designers are very fond of drywall because of its malleability. Inside, you can easily insert a backlight, make bulges and cavities of various shapes and sizes. Lots of finish options. A suspended ceiling in a plasterboard kitchen can be pasted over, lined or painted.
Today it is the most demanded material for room decoration. You can quickly create such a design. And even a novice master will cope with the work.
There are three options for the complexity of ceilings that are made of drywall:
- even;
- vaulted curving;
- curly.
Tools and materials
If you are planning to create a false ceiling in the kitchen with your own hands, then initially prepare everything you need for work.
From tools:
- level - simple and water;
- roulette;
- mounting knife;
- drill or screwdriver;
- spreaders of various sizes;
- peeling and edge planer;
- sandpaper of different grits;
- grinder;
- set of crowns.
From materials:
- waterproof drywall sheets;
- guide profiles CD and UD;
- crabs connectors;
- straight hangers;
- self-tapping bugs;
- set of dowels "quick mounting" and drill of the same diameter.
Single-level kitchen ceilings
Enoughsimple option. If you are planning a suspended ceiling for a small kitchen, then it is best to choose a single-level one. Such surfaces are most often used to cover rough surface flaws. They will be a great solution if you want to change something in the interior.
Making a multi-level ceiling
But a ceiling with several levels is already a more complicated matter. Especially if you are thinking of roundness. In the kitchen, the humidity level is always high. Therefore, take drywall that is resistant to moisture. Indeed, in the interval between the levels there will be wiring, exhaust, ventilation.
Preparation and fastening of guides
First you need to choose the design of false ceilings in the kitchen.
To do this:
- A drawing that determines how much and what materials will be required.
- Marking, plan, marking of the box on the surface. We proceed from the fact that the installation will be carried out on concrete.
- Apply points through which lines for mounting profiles are drawn.
- Check for distortion with a simple level. Draw lines point by point.
- Drill holes in the right places and attach the UD profile.
It is important to check several times if the hole marks are correct. If you get a skewed ceiling, it will be difficult to fix it.
Mount suspensions
Continue to create a false ceiling in the kitchen:
- Mounts are made along the entire length of the profile, every 0.5 meters.
- Everyonea row of suspensions is attached at a distance of 0.5 m from each other with a “quick installation”.
- The ends of the profile must be inserted along the guides. Then the profile is attached to the hangers.
- Stiffening ribs run perpendicular to the profile and are made at a distance of 0.5 m from the wall.
- Profiles and stiffening ribs "stick together" with crabs. For this, self-tapping screws of the smallest size are used. As a result, a lattice of profiles with dimensions of 0.50.5 m should be formed.
Important to remember:
- It is imperative to make a lattice. Otherwise, the drywall will sag, and all work will be ruined. It is necessary to calculate so that the sheets are well connected along the edges and profiles.
- You can check the profile sag either with a level or a tight thread.
- Use metal shears for cutting. From the grinder, the ends can oxidize and rust.
- Self-tapping screws must be taken stainless. Blacks can destroy stainless steel.
Fastening drywall (gypsum board) to the frame
It is important to correctly position the GCR. They are attached from the joints to the edges of the sheets. Otherwise, there may be a problem with further docking. Better to use a screwdriver. If you choose a drill for this job, then only with adjustable speed.
It's hard to deal with alone, it's better to do with someone who can support the sheets. If you do it alone, then you need to build something like scaffolding, like at a construction site - goats and a mop. Put one end of the sheet on the goats. The middle will be supported by a mop. This is not very convenient, so you need to work quickly.
Please note the following points:
- GKL should be taken ceiling - they are thin and light.
- After installing the sheet, draw lines with a pen in the places where the profile passes. Otherwise, attaching another sheet, you will not see where to twist.
- Screws are used only stainless, so that there are no rust stains.
Processing and putty GKL
Final work on the creation of the first level:
- All joints are glued with serpentine tape - interlaced fiberglass impregnated with glue.
- You can take any primer. Apply it with a brush like paint.
- Then putty turn. Apply with a spatula and smooth out. Pay special attention to the screw heads and joints. Wait for complete drying. If spotlights (spotlights) are planned, do not forget to make holes for them with a corresponding crown.
Second level
To highlight design elements (separation of the working area and the eating area) or greater beauty and showiness, multi-level ceilings are often made.
You already know how the first level is done. And then comes the assembly of additional boxes. There are many options here:
- You can make a border around the perimeter of the main box.
- On the contrary, focus on the center.
- If you want beauty and complexity, make steps that turn into wall shelves in several levels.
Let's consider how a suspended ceiling is mounted in the kitchen, providing for a second level. Let's take an easy option. It contains the secondthe level will be located above two zones - the work area and above the eating area.
This will look like two semicircles at opposite ends of the kitchen, separated by an oval.
So, the first level is ready, let's start the second:
- The UD profile is mounted at a distance that you choose yourself, from level No. 1.
- A self-tapping screw is fixed in the center of the kitchen. The radius of the semicircles is calculated, the cord of the same length is measured and attached to the self-tapping screw.
- A pencil is tied to the other end of the string. The lace is stretched, and a circle is drawn with a pencil (compass principle). This will be two semicircles. This method preserves the proportions of the ceiling.
- Profile ribs are cut with scissors. They bend along the contour of the first semicircle on the ceiling. Then they are screwed to the ribs of level No. 1.
- The length of the edges for the second semicircle depends on its curves. At this stage, you need to remember to run the wires for the spotlights.
- The box is sewn up with sheets of GKL.
- Wires for spotlights are passed through the holes made by the crown. Sheets are cut with a hacksaw for cutting GKL or with an electric jigsaw (but it requires a special nail file).
The piece of sheet bends quite easily. A special reel with sharp tubes is rolled over the sheet, which leave holes. Then the cut of the sheet is wetted with water and screwed to the profile. It will bend and will repeat the shape of the bends. Further, as in the first level, there is puttying, sanding and painting. Now if youask how to make a false ceiling in the kitchen (and not only), you can easily answer.
What form the ceiling will have depends only on your imagination. You can draw different sketches. But what is absolutely certain, with such a ceiling, any room will change dramatically.
