"Green haze" - a blackcurrant variety of the middle fruiting period. It was bred at the VNIIS named after I. V. Michurin and obtained by hybridization of the bush "Minay Shmyrev" with Brodtorp. The crossing process took place under the guidance of Zvyagin T. S., as well as K. D. Sergeev.
Starting from 2004, the named variety became widespread, was included in the State Register and approved for planting in the temperate climate of Russia.
In the article we will bring to your attention numerous positive reviews, photos and descriptions of the green haze currant variety.
Appearance of currant
The description of the blackcurrant variety "Green Haze", the photo of which you can see in the article, looks like this: a small bush with a slight spreading. Shoots are straight, light green in color, hairless. Those shoots that are already stiff become grayish-yellowish in color.
The green haze currant buds havethe following specifications:
- mean size;
- ovoid, somewhat elongated;
- along the length of the legs - short;
- predominantly slope away from escape;
- single;
- according to the shape of the scar - wedge-shaped, slightly rounded.
The leaves of the plant are standard: 5 pronounced lobes, relatively large, light green matte in color, do not have outgrowths, smooth, may be slightly wrinkled, have bulges.
The leaf plate is tilted down, concavity is noticeable at the beginning of the plate, along the growth of the central vein, the edges are slightly bent and raised. The ends of the blades are sharp. The central blade is similar in size to the side ones, and the upper sections deviate outward. The blades are abundantly spreading with a right angle between them.
The base of the sheet is like a heart, it can be even with slight flaws. Teeth of normal size, pointed, short, somewhat curved. The shape is serrated and slightly serrated.
Inflorescences have the usual size, shaped like a glass. They have a slightly pronounced roller, a reddish tint, have an arcuate free arrangement. Currant "green haze" has brushes ranging in size from 6 to 10 cm, in the shape of a cone. More often they are found in 1-2 pieces, they are distinguished by moderate density and direct orientation.
Fruiting and taste of variety
When describing currants "green haze" (a photo of the variety can be seen in the article), one cannot fail to mention berries. They are medium sizeweighing 1.2-1.6 g, have a rounded shape. Black in color, shining in the sun. The fruits come off without damaging the inside.
The taste of the berries is sweet and sour, they are universal by type of application. They contain the following useful items:
- sugar – 12.2%;
- titratable acid – 2.9%;
- ascorbic acid - 192 mg of substance for every 100 g of product;
- solid substances that dissolve in water – 18.9%;
- P-active components - 1198 mg per 100 g;
- pectin – 2%.
This variety tolerates frost well, can be processed mechanically. On average, 12 tons of fruits are harvested from 1 ha.
According to gardeners, the variety has clear advantages: large fruits, fast ripening, abundant fruiting, good taste. But at the same time, the bush is often affected by the bud mite.
Fit features
As they say, it is not difficult to take care of the "green haze" currant - it is enough to follow a certain algorithm. Planting, feeding, pest control, disease protection are the main actions as a result of which the bush will successfully grow and bear fruit abundantly.
Experts advise starting planting in the fall, the deadline is the end of October, but you can land in the spring. In order for the bush to take root and develop, it is allowed to add the following minerals and fertilizers to the planting hole (40 x 50 cm):
- humus;
- sulphate or potassium chloride;
- superphosphate;
- wood ash.
The root neck needs to be deepened by 6-7 cm so that additional roots and shoots can appear. After the bush is planted, it needs to be watered and covered with mulch (a protective layer that can have a different composition: sawdust, hay and straw, peat, leaf humus, etc.). Follow-up actions are regular watering, replenishing mulch under the bush, protection against pests and diseases.
Nuances of care
The photo of the "green haze" currant bushes and the description of the variety given by experts confirm that the plants need to be mulched, fed and cut. It is necessary to carry out regular watering, especially in hot weather, so that the roots do not overheat - blackcurrant does not tolerate it well due to the presence of a superficial root system.
According to reviews, watering significantly affects the size and taste of berries. They become small and acidic without sufficient moisture, so care during flowering and filling of berries consists in regular watering.
So that the roots do not overheat, and the moisture does not evaporate quickly, it is necessary to use mulch. It also saves water and makes it easier to get rid of weeds.
Urea solution, or urea, (dilute 700 g per 10 liters of water) is needed to process bushes before bud break. After the start of the process of their growth, you can treat the bushes with a 3% solution of Bordeaux liquid.
You can get rid of bud mites and aphids with the help of special preparations: Fitoverma, Actofita, Akarina, etc.
Problems of fruiting and ways to solve them
Gardeners are often faced with a decrease in the number of fruits and a deterioration in their quality. This may be due to some factors:
- The bush grows in the shade. Blackcurrants need a lot of light, in which case flower buds will grow, not leaves.
- Drought. Bushes become sensitive to lack of moisture and overheating of the root system during the summer heat.
- Excess fertilizer. In this case, the number of berries will be reduced, in contrast to the number of dark green leaves.
- The presence of old branches. On branches older than 4 years, the number and size of berries are much smaller.
- Infection with terry. Signs are a purple hue of flowers, the absence of berries, thin dense branches. Infected areas must be cut out and burned.
As gardeners confirm, careful care of green haze currants and compliance with all rules guarantee a quality harvest.
