But what if you do the opposite, that is, drag the furniture to match the expensive wall decoration?
Upholstery of sofas at home
You can do all the work to update your favorite lodge yourself. Of course, if the sofa needs serious repairs, it is better to turn to experienced furniture makers. They will make all measurements and preliminary work, make covers in the workshop, and upholstery of sofas and armchairs will be done right at home.
If you only want to update the upper part, you need to prepare the necessary amount of fabric, tools and accessories in advance. Cut covers are sewn on a sewing machine.
So, in addition to fabric and soft filler, you will need the following devices:
- different screwdrivers (flat and curly);
- pencil;
- measure tape or tailor centimeter tape;
- construction stapler and a set of staples for it;
- small circular saw (some occasions only);
- screwdriver;
- electric drill.
Upholstery for sofas: fabric and filling
In order for the sofa to become as soft and comfortable as before, it is necessary to replace not only the top, but also the inside. As a filler, foam rubber of the required rigidity, polyurethane foam, synthetic winterizer or ordinary batting are used. Sometimes a thinner layer of britbond, durafill or holofiber is laid. Then the fabric is cut and the blanks are fixed on the frame.
Before the upholstery of sofas is made, you need to properly cut the material. The selected fabric is laid out on a flat surface. Then they take the previously removed obsolete fabric coating and place it on the new material. Thus, the aged upholstery of the sofas serves as a template for the manufacture of a new one. The contour of the template is outlined with chalk and cut out with tailor's scissors, making small allowances (correction for the "splendor" of the new filler material).
Sometimes only individual parts of upholstered furniture are upholstered. In this case, the fabric is chosen to match or contrast with the main color scheme of the room. It could turn out to be a very interesting solution.
Updating furniture
So, how is sofa upholstery done at home? How to get started?
The first thing they do when reupholstering upholstered furniture is to remove the old fabric. You need to act very carefully, trying not to damage the material, as it will be used as patterns when cuttingnew sofa covers.
Then carefully inspect all the wooden parts of the frame. If breakages, cracks or chips are detected, they are sealed and strengthened. Worn and damaged parts are replaced with new ones. Be sure to check and strengthen all joints and joints, bandage and compress the springs a little.
The next step will be, if required, removing the old and laying the new soft filler. Previously, a piece of simple dense fabric is pulled onto the springs. Is the foam in good condition? So, it's time to start working on attaching covers to the frame.
Sequence of work
How is sofa upholstery attached? The fabric is shot to the wooden base with a construction stapler using metal staples. Removable parts are sheathed separately. The principle of fastening the material is similar to stretching an artistic canvas on a wooden frame. The thrown upholstery of the sofas (the main part) is attached first from opposite sides, then in two other opposite places (crosswise). Only after that, carefully and evenly pulling, they shoot the entire cover around the perimeter with staples.
Regardless of the complexity of the design, the back and bottom of the sofa or chair are processed separately. Then they assemble the removable elements and fit the fittings.
