Roofing is one of the most expensive parts of a house. Even specialized construction teams that build custom-made housing charge a separate fee for it. It is sometimes comparable to the cost of the entire frame of the building.
So the opportunity to save a little and lay roofing material on your own is welcomed by many. For example, low-cost and fairly high-quality methods include laying flexible tiles, the cost of which allows even not very we althy people to use it.
Preparing the base
Needless to say, it should be as reliable as possible and without defects. Simply put, the rafter base must be not only durable, but also treated with an antiseptic composition against decay. That is why the use of an antiseptic and the presence of a vapor barrier are mandatory conditions.
Do not forget that the vapor barrier must be laid correctly. Corners and other places of complex configuration are especially carefully prepared, since correcting flaws in these cases is not only difficult, but also impossible in principle. Please note that old school specialists in generalit is advised to treat the sheathing boards with molten bitumen before laying shingles, but this is not worth doing.
The joints of the boards must necessarily fall on the rafters, otherwise you will not be able to ensure the proper strength of the structure.
Ventilation
In no case should you forget about the construction of a normal ventilation system, because otherwise, even with a normal vapor barrier, your roof will not last long. Please note: the exhaust hole itself is located as high as possible. The air intake hole is just placed as low as possible, under the slope of the flexible tile.
Laying
First, the lining layer of the vapor barrier is mounted. Overlap - at least 10-15 cm, fasten the material with nails at intervals of at least 20 cm. Joints are punched with sealant or special roofing glue.
Fastenings
Note that it is unacceptable to use ordinary roofing nails to fasten flexible tiles. For this purpose, only specialized galvanized fasteners are used. These nails have the widest and very smooth caps, which contribute to a snug fit of the material to the surface.
When the roof slopes up to 60 degrees, it is nailed with six nails. If the steepness of the roof is higher, then a couple more fasteners are driven into the upper corners (at least 25 mm from the edge).
Please note that at ambient temperatures up to +15 degrees Celsius, we strongly recommend heating the bottom of the sheets withbuilding hair dryer. In this case, Iko shingles will protect your roof from leaks for a long time.
Some builders say that for maximum joint quality, it is best to fuse strips of shingles onto the roof. You can use a torch for this, but a simpler method uses molten bitumen.
All points where Shinglas shingles come close to windows, cornices and other structural elements must be treated with bituminous mastic or sealant.
We especially note the ridge: so that there is no fuss with such a complex element, the sheet of roofing material is simply bent in half, and the ridge itself is already placed on top.
