The process of inserting the lock itself is a simple matter, especially if the design of the lock is simple, and the door is the most ordinary. Anyone can cope with such a task, but on the condition that you know what a chisel and a hammer are.

Consider the main types of door locks. According to the type of fastening, they are mortise and overhead.

Middle Door Locks

Often it is the mortise door lock that is installed on metal doors. In wood, this place will be weak and vulnerable. The mortise door lock is built directly into the door.

When making a choice, it is very important to pay attention to the thickness of the front plate of the lock, it should not exceed the thickness of the door itself and its depth. Such locks are used for both left-handed structures and right-handed ones. In addition, there are door locks, the installation of which does not depend on which way the door opens. The main advantage is that there is no way to rip them off.

Rim door locks

They have such a name due to the fact that they are superimposed directly on the door. For self-assemblyyou do not need any special skills, and the process itself will not take much time. Most often, these locks are used in combination with other types, such as lever locks. To strengthen the protection, use a latch or chain.

According to the type of locking mechanism, all locks can be divided into three groups: lever, cylinder and electromechanical.

Level locks

This type is by far considered the most reliable when compared with other types of locks. In this case, the reliability depends entirely on the number of levers. These are the so-called plates that turn with a key and lock the lock itself. The more of them, the better the housing is protected from hacking.

Despite all the advantages, this castle has a drawback, which is the size - they are quite large. This makes it impossible to use a lever lock in thin front doors.

Also, there may be some inconvenience while using the key itself, it is also large, it is inconvenient to carry it with you. Some lever locks are equipped with transcoding blocks. This function allows you to change the key itself if necessary, replacing the lock in this case is not required.

However, the disadvantages of this type of constipation are so petty compared to all its advantages that it is still quite profitable to use it. Often, locks are equipped with 4-5 levers, which makes them reliably protected from drilling, sawing or other hacking methods.

Cylinder door locks

Cylinder samples have a cylinder in their structure, or larvae for door locks. This type of constipation is quite reliable, since it is protected from the use of master keys.

Cylinder lock can have key holes on both sides or on one side. In the second case, there is a spinner on the "inner" side, which allows you to open and close the door without using a key.

For installation in the door itself, it is necessary to make a hole so that the larvae for the door locks are not visible (to avoid breaking). To exclude possible knocking out, additional linings are used, which are located from the inside.

This type of door lock has its drawbacks, for example, there is the possibility of mechanical breaking, system breakdown, as well as the dependence of performance on humidity and temperature differences.

Electromechanical door locks

Smartlocks, or "smart" locks. They consist of mechanical and electronic parts. In the event that the battery has run out and electronic opening of the lock is not possible, you can always use an ordinary key. Electromechanical representatives can be equipped with a digital panel, a smart key, systems that are designed to recognize the retina of the eye or fingerprints.

Also, the door lock for the front door can be locking or locking. The second option implies the presence of a latch that can be removed with an ordinary turn of the handle.

Installing a lock on a wooden door

Replacing door locks in an interior door can be carried out without the help of specialists. First of all, you need to choose the type of deadbolt that you will use for installation. Installation of a mortise and overhead lock is somewhat different from each other.

If you are going to install a carved lock, then you need to adhere to a certain plan: Interior door locks are installed quickly enough. To do this, you just need to mark the place where it will be located, mark the points for the screws and the keyhole, make a hole for the latter, screw the lock itself to the door with screws, cover it from the outside and side.

  1. Prepare the necessary tools. Replacing door locks will require you to have a saw, a screwdriver with a wood drill bit, crowns, chisels, drills, screwdrivers, a tape measure and a marker.
  2. Mark the contour of the lock tie-in with a marker, you need to do this from the front side.
  3. On the side of the door, trace the outline of the locking mechanism used.
  4. Mark keyhole locations.
  5. Drill a hole in the door leaf using a drill. The hole must not be through.
  6. Use a hammer and chisel to remove excess material. The cavity should be such that the lock fits perfectly into it.
  7. Insert the lock into the hole, then circle the mounting plate and the locations of the holes for installing the fasteners at the end.
  8. Make a hole for the mounting plate, handle and keyhole. The last hole must be through.
  9. Insert and secure the lock mechanism.
  10. Fix the retainer bar, which must be placed on the end side of the door. To facilitate this process, you need to smear the crossbar with chalk. By turning the key, you activate the action of the bolt, which subsequently leaves a mark. It is this trace that will help determine the position of the hole for fixing the lock itself.
  11. Using a chisel, the opening should be deepened, taking into account the size of the tongue. It is also necessary to knock out a part of the box that corresponds to the contours of the fixing bar, after which this bar should be installed and secured with screws.
  12. Check the functionality of the installed lock.

No matter which door locks you choose, installation requires patience and care.
