Currant Titania won the hearts of gardeners with its taste, so we decided to tell you more about this variety. If you pay attention to the gardens of modern people, you can rarely find such a site where currants would not grow. These berries have so many positive qualities that everyone tends to grow them in their garden. Currant Titania, reviews of which are extremely positive, is one of the most popular varieties.
General information
Speaking about the appearance of the plant, it can be noted that the Titania currant, the photo of which we see here, has round black berries of a rather large size. The weight of each fluctuates around two grams, and in one brush there are about twenty such berries. Currant has a dense structure and a sweet taste with a sour tint. Due to its qualities, the berry is easily and successfully transported without losingits benefits. It is for this reason that Titania was chosen for industrial cultivation, as it is easy to harvest with machines.
After the ripening of the crop, you can observe an uneven distribution of berries over the surface of the bush. As for the quantity, on average, you can collect up to five kilograms from one bush. The bush itself is quite tall and can reach one and a half meters in height.
History of the species
Currant Titania, description and recommendations for the care of which we present to you, appeared in Sweden as a result of mixing varieties of Altai currant and Musta Tamas. This happened in 1970, and already in the 90s this variety appeared in many industrial areas for the cultivation of currants in Russia. After a series of studies, it was found that this new variety has many advantages over other species, which means that it makes sense to develop it and increase it. In addition to excellent taste, currant berries perfectly fight many diseases and pests. It is also worth saying that the specialists did not stop there, they continue to study and try to get even more new varieties of currants.
Landing
The Titania currant variety is recommended to be planted along the perimeter of the garden. You can do this both in autumn and in spring. Given the size of the bushes, it is necessary to leave about two meters of free space between them so that in the future the currant can develop quietly. It is allowed to plant currants in the form of a chessboard, as this makes it easy to harvest. But suchthe option is appropriate if you are going to plant large areas with this berry. Before planting a plant, you need to take care of soil preparation:
- remove all weeds and their roots from the place you have chosen to plant;
- dig up the soil and add fertilizer so that the plant has enough strength to grow;
- dig a hole half a meter in diameter, and place a mixture of ash and leaves at the very bottom;
- take a seedling and, tilting it a little, place it in the soil five centimeters deep, and then bury it; it is better if the top of the bush is directed towards the south or southeast;
- be sure to water the bush after planting, even if the soil is wet;
- choose seedlings carefully, make sure that they are strong and fresh, and also have several shoots;
- after planting, you need to cut the bush so that only three or four buds remain; this improves the growth of side branches.
Features of care
Surprising is the very high resistance that the Titania currant variety has. A description of all the advantages of this variety shows people why this particular variety should be planted. The plant is able to grow even in the northernmost regions of the country, as it calmly tolerates frost. After a winter temperature of about 30 degrees below zero, the bush continues to grow and develop in its previous form. You do not need to provide any special care for the currant to please you with its fruits every year. In the spring, you need to trim the branches, whichhelps to monitor the formation of the crown of the bush and increases the yield. You also need to feed the bush with various fertilizers of mineral and organic composition. In prolonged dry weather, water the bush, although the currant tolerates a long absence of water without problems.
A shrub can grow in the same place for fifteen years. To do this, you just need to regularly remove old branches and periodically dig in shoots to increase the number of plants.
Reproduction
Titania Currant breeds in two ways:
- Shank version.
- Reproduction by dropping shoots.
It is worth noting that experts prefer the first breeding option, as the plant has a well-developed vegetative growth. When purchasing cuttings, do so only from trusted distributors. Otherwise, you can get absolutely not the variety that you wanted to grow.
Possible problems
Titania Currant grows well and develops in the most difficult environmental conditions, and one of the advantages is resistance to diseases such as powdery mildew and anthracosis. But still, sometimes there are some problems that can be successfully solved if you approach this process correctly:
- "running gallitsa", a sign of which is the drying of branches and the appearance of spots; it is recommended to remove all damaged branches, and treat the entire bush with a suitabledrug in accordance with the instructions;
- "stalk", causing the complete death of the bush, as the larvae eat the entire inside of the trunk; you need to treat the bush with the right tool, and then carefully monitor the plant, especially after fertilizing;
- "spider mites", the presence of which is indicated by light-colored spots, as well as the acquisition of a marble structure by leaves; you need to apply the recommended preparations, and then loosen the soil and remove weeds, and remove and burn all affected leaves;
- "fruit sawfly", the presence of which is evidenced by the uneven surface of the berries, since the sawfly larvae eat away all the pulp of the fruit from the inside; you need to remove and burn all damaged parts of the bush, and treat all bushes with remedies against this pest.
Harvest
Titania currant has a good yield, and you can pick berries around the middle of summer. The ripening period of the berries stretches over several weeks, so you have the opportunity to harvest without the hassle and haste, in about three times. Then you can do with the harvest to your taste. Berries are commonly used in three different ways:
- fresh version,
- frozen look,
- reworked version (jam, compote, etc.).
As it becomes clear, currants are a favorite delicacy of both adults and children, not only because of their taste, but also because of their resistance to bad weather and a rich annual harvest.
