When deciding to renovate their apartment, many people have a desire to change the old Soviet doors for new modern ones. Beauty, grace and a variety of models attract even the most fastidious owners. But here's the problem: the width of the door frame was less than the thickness of the wall. In such cases, door extensions, which are also called an overlay or an additional board, come to the rescue.
These elements are not only able to play a practical role (correct uneven slopes), but also are a wonderful aesthetic interior design in the room. Therefore, before proceeding with the replacement of doorways, any owner tries to learn how to install extensions on the doors with his own hands. Recommendations and instructions from experienced builders will be very useful for those who have taken up this work for the first time.
Assignment of extras
Earlier, in Soviet times, all building materials were produced strictly according to the state standard. Thanks to this indicator, all window and door openings had a specific thickness. Therefore, when installing the door frame, which was alsomade strictly according to the standard, there was no question of fitting doors and windows.
Currently, manufacturers of building materials are based mainly on the technical capabilities of their enterprise, so many bricks or blocks began to be produced in different thicknesses. As a consequence, this led to different wall thicknesses in the doorway. To eliminate this discrepancy, extensions for interior doors were invented.
Functional use of overlays
Structurally, these elements are an ordinary board that fits exactly with the door. In the manufacture of door frames, modern manufacturers immediately make a special groove to install the extensions as one piece with the door. Such a technological solution greatly simplifies the finishing work and creates an aesthetic appearance of the door frame.
Additions perform the following functions:
- sealing the slopes of doorways;
- hiding uneven brickwork;
- eliminate box skew;
- significant strengthening of the door structure.
A quite reasonable question arises: "How to install dobors on the door and can I do it myself?" It is possible, and such elements are installed not only on new doors, but also when repairing old doorways.
Benefits of using extras
Unlike simple cement slopes, extensions on interior doors create visual integrity of the door frame structure, completely covering the missing width of the slope. Therefore, when buying a door blockit is desirable to immediately select the color and additional boards.
Benefits of overlays:
- simple installation of extensions saves time and money for their installation;
- with the help of an additional board, you can correct the unevenness of the door jamb;
- the ability to select colors depending on the overall style of the interior of the room;
- no contact with wet solutions during finishing work eliminates damage and soaking of the door block;
- presentable appearance and long service life.
Types of extras
Most often, standard type extensions are made of wood, MDF panels or laminated board. The division of elements into main types occurs mainly according to the degree of completion and quality of processing of the product.
There are the following types of extras:
1. Regular overlays are planks with raw edges or edges. On the one hand, the part has no finish at all, so when the width of one extension is not enough, several slats must be used.
2. Finished overlays with processed edges. The dimensions of this type of extensions are selected strictly in accordance with the width of the door jamb.
3. Telescopic dobors are equipped with a tongue-and-groove connection system, as well as a machined edge. All elements of the doorway with such overlays are interconnected using special locks.
Design features of additional boards
Regular additionis a strip of laminated or fibreboard without facing film. Experienced specialists believe that processing the ends of the edge is a waste of money and time, since one end of the lining is closed with a casing, and the other fits snugly against the door block. True, with this installation, a deviation of even a few millimeters will be very noticeable when fully installed, so the work must be carried out with extreme precision.
You can get rid of such a small visible flaw in the work by sticking an edge tape on the ends of the extension. Such processing of the edges of the plank will eliminate the swelling of the plate under the influence of moisture, which is especially necessary for door blocks installed in the kitchen or in the bathroom.
The design of the telescopic type extension is considered more complex. This design allows fastening with the help of grooves without the use of nails and self-tapping screws. The full width of the extension is adjusted by the depth of the groove. A spike is made on one side of such an element, and a groove on the other. It is very difficult to make such an overlay on your own. Therefore, before installing a telescopic extension, it is better to purchase it in the distribution network, choosing the door according to the tone.
Materials for making extensions
Often the overlay is used not only as a connecting element of the door structure, but also as a decorative item for decorating the interior.
The following materials are used for such purposes:
1. Wood is considered a beautiful and comfortable material, as it has good thermal insulation properties and modernattractive look. For lovers of antiquity, wood brushing can be done.
2. Laminated board plates are often used.
3. Plastic extensions are resistant to mechanical wear and are very practical when cleaning panels from contamination. The good water resistance of these extensions makes them widely used in bathrooms.
4. The MDF panel, made from finely dispersed chips, is also a wooden structure covered with a film specially selected for the color.
5. Drywall is considered a universal material that is decorated to match not only the doors, but also the walls of the room.
6. Metal extensions are used to finish the entrance doors, which have a metal base.
When buying a door block, it is advisable to purchase one manufacturer, this will greatly simplify the installation of these elements. Usually they are marked based on the type of door unit and its size.
Installation
Installation of additional strips can be done in several ways. Therefore, before starting work, you need to think about how to install extensions. The ways of mounting the overlays are as follows:
- mounting the dobors on a pre-prepared frame;
- installation of overlays directly on the opening plane;
- paneling with a door frame.
This element on the doorway does not carry a large mechanical load, so you can install extensions asliquid nails, and with the help of mounting foam.
Groove mounting
It is advisable to buy a door frame with a groove made in advance. This will speed up the installation process a lot.
The technological process of installing the extension into the groove is as follows:
1. First, we measure the distance from the edge of the slope to the installed box. Such measurements must be made at several points in order to estimate the magnitude of the slope.
2. When carrying out such measurements, the depth of the groove must also be taken into account. Summing up these readings, we determine the total width of the overlay.
3. Then we mark the workpiece and use an electric jigsaw to cut out the necessary part.
4. Next, the extension is inserted into the groove on the door block.
5. The same technological operations are performed on all sides of the slope.
6. The upper dobor is laid on vertical slats, forming the letter "P". In this case, it is necessary to strictly observe a right angle to the plane of the block.
7. To temporarily fix the correct position of the elements, you can use tape.
8. Further, all voids must be filled with mounting foam.
9. After the foam has completely dried, the protruding residues are cut off with a sharp knife.
10. Then trims are installed.
Installation of overlays without a groove
And how to install extensions if there is no groove on the door frame? It is also quite possible to do it yourself,but you will have to very accurately display the ideal cutting line of the bar.
The technology of work looks like this:
- First of all, it is necessary to make accurate measurements in several places from the edge of the slope to the installed door block.
- Next, carefully cut out the appropriate parts.
- Edge tape is glued onto the resulting sections.
- Half-thin nails are hammered into the ends of the overlays in increments of 20-25 cm. Hats are cut at an angle.
- Then the vertical extensions are nailed, slamming the bar with nails.
- The upper overlay is placed on the vertical extensions, after which the right angle is controlled.
- The top bar is nailed on.
- All voids are filled with polyurethane foam.
Mounting on metal doors
By design, iron entrance doors are not very wide. There are no grooves in metal boxes, so the extensions are installed on a pre-prepared frame, which can be made from wooden bars or plasterboard aluminum profiles. The frame is made strictly according to the level to hide all surface imperfections.
Plasterboard strips are fixed over the frame. Fastening can be done either with liquid nails or with self-tapping screws. Thus, two problems are solved at once - the reliability of the foundation and good thermal insulation, which is very important for the entrance doors to the apartment.
The last step is to install the casing.
Remember that when installing extensions, you must beas attentive and careful as possible. Any, even a very small, mistake can lead to a disastrous result, which will be very difficult to fix.
