Decorative plaster is widely used in interior decoration. For many years it has been used both for interior and exterior work. It has wear-resistant properties, waterproof, after application to the surface, forms a durable layer. This type of finishing material allows you to use many different design solutions, gives the room texture and original color scheme. A variety of patterns are applied to the surface using rollers for decorative plaster. Having studied the technology, it will not be difficult to make a finish with such material. You can do it yourself without involving expensive professionals.
Decorative plaster
Before you learn how to apply different ornaments on a layer of decorative plaster, you need to familiarize yourself with this material in more detail. It is a particularly durable coating, which includes certain fillers. For example, pebbles, crumbs of marble, granite, mica, quartz, wood fiber. Necessarily in the composition of such a solution there are polymeric and acrylic substances, they are responsible for the binding functions. Thanks to them, the plaster acquires elasticity andseized after a certain period of time. It is quite enough to apply an ornament to the surface using textured rollers.
Types of plaster
There are two main types of decorative plaster:
- Textured. Such a solution forms a relief immediately after application. This is due to the presence of granules in it. According to their size, the mixture is divided into coarse, medium, fine and fine.
- Structural. Forms an elastic and smooth layer; rollers for decorative plaster are used for relief application. The color of the solution is predominantly white, tinted by adding special dyes.
Types of rollers for decorative plaster
Features of this material allow you to create a unique and original relief on the surface. Each of them corresponds to a certain type of rollers. Consider the most common of them:
- Model with pile imitates the surface of the fur. The ornament will depend on its length and thickness. A long pile makes the plaster more porous, while a short pile makes the surface smoother.
- The raised wave embossed roller creates a wave-like relief.
- Plastic nozzles with holes. Thanks to such rollers, a rather embossed surface is obtained, notches and protrusions alternate.
- The roller with loops imitates the texture of natural stone as realistically as possible.
- Models with convex clear ornaments are used for applyingcertain patterns.
Rollers for textured plaster: selection rules
In order to apply the necessary relief on the surface of decorative plaster, the main thing is to choose the right roller.
- Protruding elements are obtained using nozzles with recesses.
- In order to squeeze the ornament on the wall, you will need a roller with bulges.
- Imitation of brickwork is made using a special nozzle with transverse notches, which are arranged in a checkerboard pattern.
- Twisted rubber bolsters create a natural wood look.
- Roll for walls made of highly compressed rough fabric or leather imitates marble.
- In order to give the plaster texture of textiles, it is enough to stick a piece of matter on a rubber nozzle.
How to create complex patterns on the surface of decorative plaster?
The natural ornament on the plastered wall looks very nice. In order to create it, it is enough to use a relief roller and a not very thick solution. It is necessary to apply the mixture in translational movements, observing the chosen direction, which is not recommended to be changed later.
The situation is much more complicated with complex artistic patterns. Of course, there are rollers for decorative plaster with certain reliefs. However, using the abovetechnology is impossible, since in some places the mixture will be superimposed in a very thick layer, while other areas will be completely left without finishing material. In this case, it is most important to first apply the plaster with a spatula, and only after that go through the figured roller. The speed, pressure force and direction of movement must be the same throughout the entire area. After the first strip is drawn, all subsequent strips are butted to the previous one, overlaps and indents are not allowed.
Do-it-yourself roller
Rollers for textured plaster can be purchased at any hardware store. However, if there is a desire to give the finish a truly individual and unique look, then such a tool can be made independently. For these purposes, a wallpaper rubber roller, a thick tourniquet, strips of rubber or leather (sometimes regular erasers can be used) and glue are perfect.
It is necessary to cut out some figure from leather or other materials described above. Its form is chosen individually. It is necessary to stick the figures at some distance so that a distinct relief appears on the surface of the plaster. It is advisable to decorate the edges of the nozzle as evenly as possible, so that when working with a roller there is no difference between the sides.
Applying decorative plaster with a roller
So, let's get acquainted with the detailed technology of applying ornaments to the surface of the plaster.
- Be sure to remove all the old coating, problem areas are leveled and, if necessary, close up. And after complete drying, they are primed with a special tool.
- When using two or more colors in the finish, plaster should be applied in several layers. For example, the first is a draft, the second is a different color, etc.
- For a clear separation of the palette, you can use masking tape.
- During the application of the top coat, the direction of movement should only be from top to bottom.
- Decorative plaster dries in about 20 minutes. Therefore, it must be applied in small areas in order to have time to apply patterns using textured rollers.
- The degree of pressure, speed and direction of movement of the tool should not differ. Otherwise, you may not get a solid canvas.
- If the convex edges of the pattern are too rough, then they are corrected with a brush or foam rubber.
- After the decorative layer has completely dried, use a special mesh to carefully sand the resulting prints.
- Surface painted after 48 hours.
Other ways to apply patterns
Rollers for decorative plaster are not the only tool for applying patterns to the surface. For this purpose, you can use a foam sponge, brush, hard brush, rough cloth.
- Sponge pattern. The image is soft, without rough transitions, spotted form. A sponge with large pores allows you to give the surface a pronounced texture, and with small ones, on the contrary, it is smoother. During applicationmovement pattern should be smooth and blotting. You can combine large and small sponge on the same surface. It turns out a deep and original pattern.
- Application of fabric. The easiest way. The fabric is attached to the roller, strongly stretched, which allows you to create a characteristic pattern. With this tool, you can work with a liquid solution.
- A wide variety of patterns are applied with a brush.
With the help of rollers for decorative plaster, you can give the room an original and unique design. Don't be afraid to experiment and make creative decisions.
