Roof structures in modern construction are very different. Most often, gable, mansard, flat, hipped and shed roofs are used. The simplest in design is the last type - a pitched roof.
Traditionally, this type is used not for residential premises, but for outbuildings, garages, gazebos, sheds, etc. However, sometimes a pitched roof is also used for residential buildings, but most often as one of the roofing elements of a complex structure.
One of the most important points when installing a shed roof is the correct calculation of the angle of inclination of the slope. It can be different when using different roofing materials. The table shows the minimum angle of inclination for the most common ones.
Roofing material | Minimum angle (deg.) |
Ondulin, slate | 20-35 |
Profiling | 8 |
Roofing material | 5 |
Metal tile | 30 |
The shed roof truss system, as already noted, is simple in design. All that needs to be done is during the construction process to arrange so that one wall is higher than the other. But with this option, it is quite difficult to achieve evenness of the ceiling. Therefore, another option is more often used: they simply build up the walls with wooden beams, and a thicker beam is placed on one of the walls, and thinner on the second. As a result, the rafters will lie obliquely, and you will get a slope at an angle. How much one wall should be higher than another or one beam thicker than another to form the required angle is calculated using geometric formulas.
The design of a shed roof in the event that the span is no more than 4.5 m will consist only of a Mauerlat, a stop and a crate. With a larger width, additional bars of such a thickness are stuffed onto the floor beams to withstand the angle of inclination, or struts are installed. In the rafters, to prevent their possible shifts, triangular cutouts are made - in those places where they rely on the Mauerlat and on additional intermediate bars. For reliable fastening of rafters and Mauerlat, two hundredth nails are used. You also need to arrange additional fastening by hammering a special rafter bracket on the side. These staples are made from rebar.
For all roofing materials used in construction, there are some general rules for installation on any type of roof. Shed roof is not in thisplan an exception. First, the material is laid from the bottom up, starting from the eaves. Secondly, overlaps are made between plates, sheets or canvases. The openings between the slope and the walls from the ends are laid with bricks, concreted or clogged with boards.
As you can see, a shed roof is quite simple to implement. Any person can make such a design if he has the desire and initial skills. And it takes much less materials than other types of roofs. And that means it's a lot cheaper. Such a roof has only one significant drawback: it is impossible to arrange an attic space under it.
