If you need to install a mortise lock for a wooden or metal door, it is not necessary to contact a specialist. You can do it yourself. To work, you only need a set of special tools. It is important to take your time and follow the instructions carefully.

How to choose a mortise lock:

  1. The element should not occupy more than 30 percent of the width of the end of the front door, and 70% of the interior.

Put the canvas on the end, supporting it with wooden bars. The latter can be covered with a cloth so as not to scratch the surface of the door. At all stages of installation, check the operation of the lock. A slight deviation when marking or cutting out can spoil the operation of the locking mechanism. Below is a step-by-step look at installing a mortise lock for a metal door.

Step 1: determine the location

Before proceeding with the installation, it is necessary to determine the location of the locking element. From the bottom of the canvas, measure 1 meter in height and put a mark. This is considered the most convenient location for the door handle. Attach the locking mechanism to the mark and trace the outline.

Step 2: prepare the hole

How is the mortise lock installed next? The notch is drilled with a drill. In the resulting circled rectangle, you need to make holes. Remove the remaining notches with a file. It is important that the lock fit snugly into the socket.

Step 3: Marking up

Insert the lock into the canvas and make marks for future fastening. Drill to make holes for the bolts.

Step 4: install the knob

Apply the lock to the door leaf. Measure on both sides of the place where the handles will be installed later. Drill and insert it into the body of the door. Tighten all parts with a screwdriver. Make holes and install handles. Pinstriker.

Installing a mortise lock for a wooden door

The preparatory stage of work is similar to the installation of a locking element in a metal door. You also need to mark the place of the cut and circle the outline. The process then proceeds in several stages:

  • A groove is cut with a pen drill. The hole must be 2 mm larger than the width of the lock. Thanks to this, the mechanism will effortlessly enter the well.
  • To make the hollow smooth, without nicks, it needs to be trimmed with a chisel and a hammer.
  • Clean the groove from sawdust and insert the lock there.
  • Apply the striker to the end and circle it with a simple pencil.
  • To make the bar flush, make a notch with a hammer and chisel.
  • Take out the lock and attach it to the side of the door. With a ruler, measure the place under the handle and the keyhole. Drill holes in the marked places.
  • Try on the castle. If deviations and other errors are noticed at this stage, they need to be corrected.
  • Install the larva in the keyhole and secure with the screws that came with the kit. If everything works, you can screw the bar.
  • Lubricate the latch with a coloring composition that is easily washed off. Close the door and turn the key and then open. There will be a trace of paint on the door frame. This is where the latch will go.
  • With a chisel, make a groove under the tongue. The second bar also deepens flush, like the first. It should run flush with the canvas.
  • The whole structure is fixed with bolts.
