Socket heads appeared more than two centuries ago - at the turn of the 18th-19th centuries - since people learned to build complex machines and mechanisms (steamboats, steam locomotives, machine tools, etc.), which included nuts and bolts that could only be unscrewed from the end. A lot of time has passed since then, both the mechanisms themselves and the tools for their maintenance have been improved, but the original design and principle of operation of the socket heads have remained practically unchanged.
The life of a modern car enthusiast, and even more so workers of a car service or a tire shop, is hard to imagine without this universal tool. A set of socket heads, along with a jack and a spare wheel, is a mandatory attribute of any motorist. Using a movable handle, you can unscrew screws, nuts and other fasteners in any hard-to-reach places and at any angle where an open-end wrench or ring wrench cannot cope.
Types of sockets
Sockets are classified according to the following main parameters:
- Poform. Usually used six- and twelve-sided. As the name implies, hexagon sockets are used for unscrewing hexagonal profiles, and dodecahedral sockets for dodecagonal profiles. In addition to conventional hex sockets, there are dynamic profile sockets that provide not only coverage of the hex corners, but also auxiliary lateral contact. Due to the maximum load distribution, any damage to both the unscrewed part and the tool itself is excluded.
- By length. Long end sockets are used when working with a complex extension or with fasteners located in a recess.
- As intended. General and special. Special ones include, for example, candle heads, which differ from ordinary ones in that they have a special device (ball, magnet, rubber band) for fixing the candle.
- According to the size of the connecting squares. The size of the connecting square depends on the size of the end head itself. Typically ranges from 1/4" (for 4-14mm sockets) to 1" (for 38-80mm sockets)
- According to the measurement system. Depending on the measurement system, socket dimensions may be specified in millimeters or inches. Metric sockets typically range in size from 4mm to 80mm, while inch sockets range from 5/32" to 3-1/8".
What to look for when buying sockets
To buy sets of socket heads, of course, it is better in stores,specializing in the sale of tools. It is advisable to buy a tool from well-known manufacturers (Phillips, Pozi-Drive, Topx, Star, etc.).
Before choosing a set of sockets, you must carefully examine their appearance. The socket heads must have a dense, even coating over the entire surface, which should not peel off.
Tools can be matte or polished. There is no fundamental difference between them, however, the former slip less in the hands, although they get more dirty during operation.
In addition, it should be borne in mind that socket heads are designed for manual tightening and tightening with wrenches. The latter are made of high-alloy hardened steel. Such heads are harder, but at the same time more fragile. Therefore, when choosing a set of heads, you should consider what tool they will be used with.
