A little about the name

Its common name is white dogwood. It belongs to the Kizilov family. Botanists in the genus dogwood have approximately 60 species, divided into 4 subgenera. White deren belongs to the subgenus of svida (or svidina), from where another one came fromname - white pork.

In the UK, the colloquial name is Siberian dogwood, and in America (USA) - Tatarian dogwood. In the British name, the epithet "Siberian" indicates the homeland of the shrub: Siberia, northern Korea and China. And the American "dog" tree reflects a very old name for the fruits of the plant, which were called dog berries. According to another version, the word dogwood is a slightly modified dagwood, meaning strong wood, from which swords, daggers and arrows used to be made. And in fact, white turf wood was widely used for these purposes. The very first mention of derain, which has survived to this day in this capacity, belongs to the poet Geoffrey Chaucer (late 14th century). It turns out that this plant has been present in the culture of the peoples of Europe and Asia since ancient times.

Daren has another popular name - reddish. And it is called white in connection with the color of its berries and flowers.

Features of the plant

In culture, white turf (a detailed description is given below in the article) is a hedge that changes its outfits several times during the year. Moreover, the first impression of him is an ordinary unremarkable bush that does not attract anything special. In fact, the green leaves of the bush can turn into bright orange. They can be red, and purple, and even purple, depending on the variety. In winter, you can observe the amazingly beautiful coral color of the bark of the branches.

Among them are species known for their sweet and sour, edible and tasty fruits.

The variety name speaks for itself. The bush looks very elegant. Flowering begins in the third year of growth.

Growing conditions

Further it will become clear that for this plant the process of growing, planting and care is not at all complicated. Derain white (photo presented in the article) grows best in sunny areas, but it also feels good in partial shade. Not terrible for this plant and groundwater, located close to the roots.

Preferred soils are moist and fertile, but can grow on poorer soils, but periodic top dressing is necessary. Sandy loamy soils are not very suitable for this plant - the decorative properties deteriorate and it grows more slowly. Also, clay soils are not quite suitable, as they are heavy and do not allow oxygen to the roots of the plant.

Landing

It should be noted that the pit must be prepared in advance, about 2 weeks before disembarkation. Compost, humus and mineral fertilizers are added to it. This is enough for the plant to no longer need to be fed for several years.

In order to grow a beautiful bush from seedlings, it is best to buy them in a nursery. There is some risk in buying from the market. Four-year-old seedlings are considered the best, giving many strong shoots and growing quite quickly.

Scheme for planting cuttings and purchased seedlings:

  • planting is preferably carried out in early spring or late autumn before the first frosts;
  • if dried roots are found in the seedlings, they should be placed in a container with water for several hours before planting so that they can absorb the required amount of moisture;
  • preliminarily dig up and fertilize the site;
  • bushes should be 2-3 meters apart;
  • pour one bucket of water into the holes, you can use compost;
  • you need to fill the hole in several stages, while carefully tamping the ground around the root;
  • young sprouts should be watered more often.

Reproduction

White derain has been living for more than 50 years. Planting and caring for it does not require much effort. Therefore, it is worth growing it in the garden.

The plant is propagated by seeds, cuttings and layering.

  1. Seeds are harvested in autumn. It should be noted that they have excellent germination. You can sow them in the fall, but it is better to first stratify in the cellar or in the refrigerator at a temperature of about +4 degrees. It should be noted that where sod bushes grow, the seeds can be dispersed by birds, so they can sprout in the most unexpected places.
  2. Green cuttings do not take root very well. Those that have gone into growth may freeze in the first winter. It is better to root a two-year-old lignified cutting, as there are root primordia along the entire length of the branch.
  3. Propagation by layering is the best way. It is enough to dig them in the spring to a depth of 10 cm and constantly water the soil. Roots will appear in about six months. In autumn or next year, the young bush should be planted in a permanent place, but it is better to leave for another year and transplant a fully formed bush.

Care

Clean white derain. Caring for him does not take much time.

Frequent watering is needed only for newly planted seedlings (daily), adult bushes need to be watered only in hot weather (up to 3 times a month). Just one plant needs 2-3 buckets of water.

White sod doesn't really need to be fed, but for more active growth and flowering, you can apply fertilizer 2 times a year (mineral in spring, organic in summer).

One of the most important stages of turf care is pruning. This shrub allows you to do incredible things with it. It can take on a variety of shapes, making it a great addition to any garden space.

Pruning recommendations

  1. Garden saw and pruner needed for proper pruning.
  2. Before this process, old, diseased and frostbitten branches should be disposed of.
  3. Winter is the only time when this event is not held, but with relatively warm weather, you can cut off some ugly protruding branches.
  4. If you accidentally cut off a fairly large number of branches, you should not be upset, because the turf grows back very quickly.

As you can see, this plant is easy to care for, as well as planting. Derain white needs some attention, but it is worth it, as it perfectly decorates any site.garden or park area.

Types of crowns

Many varieties of crowns can be formed from white turf. Below are the most famous of them:

  1. Column. For its formation, a bush grown from a cutting is best suited. To achieve a more spectacular form, only upright shoots should be left, and protruding shoots should be removed.
  2. Hemisphere. In a perennial shrub, fresh shoots are cut, the age of which is not more than 3 years. Moreover, they are cut so that they remain above the soil surface at about 10-15 cm height. With this method, the lower part of the bush does not remain bare.
  3. Arc. Derain white, from which the columns were created, can be transformed into beautiful arches. To do this, bend the shoots to the side and attach them to the ground or to the fence. Benches can be installed under such arches.
  4. Ball, cube and other shapes can be created using garden shears.

The derain bush can be turned into any shape that fits perfectly into any garden design.

Practically unattractive in summer (dense branches with small white flowers), it stands out from other shrubs in autumn. Its whole charm lies in the fact that it is at this time of the year that it reveals itself in its full glory.
