Sealant for seams is an adhesive and sealing mass for sealing cracks and joints in building structures. It is used for sealing gaps indoors and outdoors, and in masonry for sealing. Joint sealants are selected depending on the type of construction work (exterior or interior), surface characteristics and operating conditions (temperature changes, humidity, UV radiation).

Types of seals

By composition, they are divided into acrylic, polyurethane, silicone, bituminous and others.

Acrylic joint sealant is a plastic mass used for sealing joints in plaster and wood, plasterboard constructions. Joints are treated with a sealant when installing doors and windows, fixing skirting boards, floor coverings, and also close up cracks in furniture and walls. The sealant has a high coefficient of adhesion to porous surfaces (concrete, wood, brick, drywall, plaster). It is recommended to use it for interior work, while avoiding damp rooms and joints of plumbing equipment. Acrylic sealantelastic, but poorly resistant to deformation. It has high heat resistance, UV resistance, environmentally friendly, easy to use. After processing, already after 45 minutes, a film is formed, and complete hardening occurs in a day. Acrylic sealants are white, but can be plastered and painted in other colors.

Silicone grout is used for repair and general construction work. Such a sealant for seams is the most common. It is well combined with almost all materials (except Teflon, polyethylene and silicone), more elastic, heat and weather resistant than acrylic. Sealant can be acid and neutral. The first is more suitable for working with ceramics, wood and plastic, and the second is applied to anything - foam concrete and concrete, wood, brick, plaster, PVC. For bathrooms and toilets, sealants with antifungal additives should be used to prevent mold.

These fillers tolerate both humidity and heat well, are elastic and retain their strength for a long time (up to 20 years).

Polyurethane sealant for seams is used for facade work, sealing foundations and roofs, glazing attic, for sealing joints in ventilation systems. It is suitable for bonding seams made of metal, wood, plastic, stone, brick, concrete. Possessing good adhesion, it is used as a sealant for interpanel seams. The downside is that it is flammable and degrades quickly when exposed to UV rays.

Sealant for seams foams when squeezed out of the bottle (volume increases 30-50 times). Filling the seams is recommended to be done in several steps. Packages (cylinders) are produced with foam for professional and domestic use.

There are sealants with more specific applications. For example, butyl glass is used for double-glazed windows, as they are vapor-permeable, elastic enough, and resistant to UV radiation. They also produce bituminous and thiokol sealants for joints.
