Many for some reason believe that you can paste wallpaper on your own quickly and without much effort. To some extent they are right, but only in part. Because a fairly large number of home craftsmen still live with the old ideas about this procedure, when both the finishing material itself and the pasting technology were almost antediluvian.
What did it look like before? People bought cheap paper wallpapers in the store (others simply weren’t sold then, and weren’t produced), they quickly pasted them on top of the existing ones, not particularly bothered by the preliminary preparation, after which they could only rejoice at the results of the “repair”. Today, things are somewhat different. There are a huge number of various types of this finishing material on the market, and wallpaper is no longer paper, although there are some, but vinyl, fabric, non-woven, bamboo, etc. All of them are created from modern materials and based on innovative technologies, and therefore the pasting process requires competentapproach. Moreover, wallpapers today are produced in various widths - from 53 cm to one meter six centimeters. And just like that, with a swoop, without at least minimal skills and sufficient fundamental knowledge, you can’t glue them.
No, of course, you can stick any tapestries on the wall, but the result will not always please you. This is especially true for wide wallpapers, or, as they are also called, meter-long. Not only is it rather difficult to work with them due to their large size, but they are also extremely capricious in terms of exactingness to the surface to be glued. And therefore, anyone who thinks about how to glue meter-long wallpapers should, before proceeding directly to the process itself, carefully study all the available information about it. Which, in fact, we intend to present below. Let's start with the basics.
What are meter wallpapers
The most important thing that a novice master should know is that such wallpapers can only be of two types. Either vinyl on non-woven base, or purely non-woven. The latter, as a rule, go under painting.
Interlining is, in essence, a non-woven material created on the basis of cellulose fibers, which are held together by a special polymer. It is much thinner than a traditional paper wallpaper base, but at the same time it is much stronger. It is this feature that every master who is looking for an answer to the question of how to glue non-woven wallpaper (meter or standard width, because there are such - it doesn’t matter) should know. Because, having a lot of advantages, this finishing material has one significant drawback - it is extremely demanding on the surface to be finished. And even despite the fact that non-woven wallpaper is quite able to hide minor defects and irregularities, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work before the pasting process itself. And sometimes quite large. More on that later.
On the need to prepare the base surface
In the question "How to glue non-woven meter-long wallpaper?" the key is the word "non-woven", not "meter". Of course, it is quite difficult to glue without skill beautifully and evenly such a voluminous and heavy piece of wallpaper, the area of \u200b\u200bwhich is more than two and a half square meters. However, this is not the main thing. If the finishing material is thin enough (and such wallpapers are very thick, and almost transparent to the light) or has a light shade, then, if there is a non-uniform color surface under it, all this “geography” will be visible under the new coating. In other words: if the wall is dark, plus there are also areas covered with putty on it, then all this beauty will simply be visible under the interlining. Therefore, rule number one: wallpaper can be glued only on a surface of uniform color. Desirable white.
Since the manufacturer offers to glue meter-long wallpapers without spreading the finishing material (that is, only the wall is processed with glue), the base surface must be clean, dry and not absorbing glue at the speed of sound. This is the second rule.
And third. Since it is necessary to glue meter-long wallpapers strictly butt-to-butt (there is no question of any overlap), it is necessary that the base base be smooth. The presence of all kinds of pebbles and irregularities on it will not allow you to make a perfect seam.
It is with these rules in mind that preliminary work is required.
Preparing the wall
First of all, you need to completely remove the old wallpaper (whitewash, paint) from the wall. Then it is necessary to repair all cracks and other possible defects. Then there are, of course, several preparation options, but all of them, each in its own way, are not entirely suitable. Ideally, the wall should be plastered and primed. Let it not be thorough, as for painting, since minor defects will be hidden under the wallpaper, but still at least once you need to go through the wall with putty. As a result, you will get a white, smooth surface that adheres well to the finishing material. That is, what is required for non-woven wallpaper.
If for some reason this is impossible to do, then it is desirable to carry out at least several types of work. First of all, it is required to treat the walls with a deep penetration primer. After that, the walls will not “drink” glue like that. And then, since gluing meter-long wallpapers is strongly recommended only on a surface that is uniform in color, you need to once again treat the base with soil. Only this time tinted. Thanks to him, the walls will turn white.
About glue
Remember: no universal compounds should be purchased. Buy glue designed specifically for interlining. Since it is necessary to glue vinyl meter-long wallpapers, smearing only the walls, then the composition for work should be designed specifically for this type of work. That is, on the box with glue there should be an inscription: "For non-woven wallpaper." As for the method of preparing the composition, the whole process is usually described in detail on the packaging.
Wall markings
After the surface is prepared, you need to start marking. By and large, wide wallpapers are glued in the same way as narrow ones. The only difference is that, in the case of a large number of doors (for example, in the hallway), it may be difficult to trim. Yet the canvas is quite wide. And, of course, it will be quite difficult to cope with such a heavy and wide piece alone without skills. Therefore, the work must be carried out together. So, correctly draw the walls. That is, figure out which side is better to start from, so that in the end, an inserted piece of several centimeters is not in a prominent place. Sometimes it is advisable to start pasting from the door, and not from the window. Or even from the middle of the room. After you have decided on the starting point, draw a vertical line on the wall using a plumb line or level.
Preparing wallpaper
Next cut the wallpaper. It is not recommended to immediately cut all the rolls if the wallpaper is patterned. Do it gradually, as needed. Iffinishing material without a pattern, then you can cut all the wallpapers, adding five to six centimeters for allowances in length.
Sticking
Since it is recommended to glue meter-long vinyl wallpapers on non-woven fabric only by applying glue to the wall, then the first thing to do is to do just that. Thoroughly coat the area to be glued with a roller or brush. After that, standing on the table (a stepladder in this case will not work because of the width of the wallpaper), attach the first canvas to the wall, focusing on the outlined line. Leave a little margin at the top. Then, with a rubber roller, start smoothing the canvas from top to bottom, while carefully making sure that there are no bubbles. After that, remove the remaining glue with a rag and cut off the top and bottom. The next canvas is glued in exactly the same way, but strictly butt-to-butt. And so to the corner.
How to glue meter wallpaper in the corners
If you are sure that the corners in the room are absolutely even, feel free to wrap the wallpaper on the next wall and continue to glue on. Just smear more glue in addition to the corner itself. If there is no such confidence, the canvas will have to be cut. To do this, wrap it on the wall, gently walk the edge of the spatula along the corner, and then cut the wallpaper, stepping back from the intended line by half a centimeter. Glue the cut piece overlapping into the corner, and then dance from its edge. In the event that you start gluing from a corner, run the edge of the first canvas at an angle per centimeter. Secondstick on it too with an overlap under level control, so that all subsequent strips lay flat.
How to glue meter-long wallpaper on the ceiling
This procedure has some peculiarities. As for preparation, there is only one option here: the ceiling must be cleaned of whitewash, puttied and primed. It should be white, smooth and even. Then you need to attend to the preparation of "forests". That is, arrange several tables so that you can move freely around them. Then we stir the glue, draw a straight line on the ceiling (we start marking from the window), measure the length of the first canvas (the distance from wall to wall with a margin of 10 centimeters). It is recommended to glue in length, not in width. After that, cut off the desired piece of wallpaper and roll it into a roll, but with the front side inward. We smear the ceiling with glue and begin to glue the wallpaper, gradually unwinding the roll and smoothing the surface of the finishing material with a roller. The procedure should be carried out only together (one glues and smoothes, the second unwinds and corrects). We cut off the excess, remove the remaining glue, glue the next strip in the same way and butt to butt.
Conclusion
We tried to tell in detail how to properly glue meter-long wallpapers. As you can see, the procedure is not much different from working with conventional materials, except that only the wall needs to be smeared. But in order to have such an opportunity and get a good result in the end, this very wall needs to be properly prepared. Which is perhaps the most importantnuance of this kind of finishing work.
