Painting is not limited to painting the premises from the inside, but also involves painting the outside, including if the surface to be painted is metal. In this case, you need a special paint for metal for outdoor work. It is intended not only to give the facade of a dwelling or other structure an attractive appearance, but also to protect it from corrosion, to add water-repellent properties to the surface. In addition, exterior metal paint may have special qualities such as increased heat resistance or fire resistance.

What are the colors

On the modern construction market, paints are widely represented. Each of them has its own specific properties and has its own scope. Usually, the following types of paints are used for painting metal surfaces:

  1. Hamerite metal paint

Oil paint for metal. Produced on the basis of drying oil, it is quite oftenIt was used as the main tool in carrying out outdoor painting work. However, surfaces painted with oil paint do not tolerate prolonged exposure to moisture well, and therefore its use has now declined somewhat.

  2. Acrylic paint. Quite often used when carrying out painting work. Applied to any surface, it allows the surface to "breathe". However, acrylic paint for metal for outdoor use quickly loses its original appearance, especially after the end of the cold period, because it “does not like” low temperatures.
  3. Alkyd paint. It perfectly tolerates the aggressive effects of the external environment, has a reliable adhesion to the painted surface, in addition, it has a characteristic stable gloss. However, when working with this paint, safety precautions should be taken very carefully, because it is very toxic.

Metal surface preparation and painting

Before applying paint, the metal surface must first be cleaned of dirt and grease stains, and most importantly, of rust. This can be done both mechanically and chemically. If chemical rust removers were used, then the surface to be painted after their application should be rinsed abundantly with warm water and dried. The only exception is, perhaps, the Hamerite metal paint. For its application, it is not only not necessary to prime the surface, but also to clean it from rust. In addition, it has the so-called hammer effect, i.e. after application, the product becomessimilar to coinage.

Paint is applied to the surface both in one and in several layers. This can be done with a brush, roller or with a spray gun. Before use, the paint must be thoroughly mixed. When re-applying, the coating must be allowed to dry thoroughly. Especially carefully it is necessary to paint hard-to-reach places, as well as edges. The consistency of the paint used for such surfaces should be thicker, and it should be applied in the direction from the middle to the edges.

Before purchasing paint, in any case, you must carefully read the instructions that are on each bank, and decide for which surface it will be used. A simple rule to remember is that outdoor metal paint can be used indoors as well, but not vice versa.
