The word "anchor" for most of us is strongly associated with sea or river vessels, seafarers and sailors. Anchor tattoo, anchors on peakless ribbons, etc. And there is a similar device for land "ships". But if the ship needs this device in order to stay in place, then the car needs the anchor for the winch, rather, in order to move.

To help off-road lovers

Whatever the off-road vehicle is - domestic or foreign, but there are enough places where you can get stuck up to your ears on the map of the Russian Federation, thank God. Anyone who has come across a car that has sat down “on its belly” in liquid mud knows that it is useless to try to solve the issue with a shovel. The wheels only sink deeper into the muck.

The presence of a winch on the "iron horse" significantly expands its capabilities in terms of cross-country ability. A sufficiently powerful device, consisting of a drum, a cable and a mechanical or electric drive, can pull a car out of any dirt. In terms of the efficiency of pulling out stuck machines, the winch can only be compared, perhaps, withtractor Belarus.

But in order to pull out a stuck car with a winch, the end of the cable must be securely fastened to something. The task is facilitated in the forest, where there are enough trees with thick trunks and powerful root systems. And what to do in the field (in spring, autumn, and sometimes in rainy summer, ordinary arable land turns into an impenetrable mess), swampy terrain? This is where the anchor for the winch comes to the rescue. The device allows you to create a fairly reliable support for the reverse end of the cable both in loose sand and in swamp slurry.

Georgian anchor do it yourself: drawing

Some of these devices can be made from improvised materials right in the field (the simplest is a log buried in the ground to a sufficient depth perpendicular to the tensioned cable). Others, like the Georgian winch anchor, are portable enough to fit in the trunk and are always at hand when needed.

Many of these devices, if you have a welding machine and desire, are easy to make yourself. Consider one such anchor for a winch, the drawing of which is shown in the diagram below.

Anchor is a metal scrap or a thick-walled pipe with "wings" attached to the central rod by electric welding. It should be noted that the thickness of the sheet metal from which the "wings" are made is not recommended to be less than 4-5 mm. The dimensions in the diagram are given with a fairly large difference. Their particular choicedepends primarily on the dimensions and gross weight of the vehicle.

How it works

How to pull out a stuck car with the help of an anchor for a winch with your own hands will be easily understood by someone who has walked behind a plow at least once in his life. An incorrectly adjusted angle of attack of the plow leads to the fact that the implement of agriculture begins to uncontrollably burrow into the ground. An attempt to apply more effort (turn on the gas on the walk-behind tractor or adjust the draft animal) only leads to the fact that the plowshare only goes deeper into the ground and is more securely fixed in it.

The winch anchor works the same way. A metal cable is threaded into the hole, covering the pipe. The diagram clearly shows that the force of the winch makes the anchor burrow deeper into the ground. Initially, the anchor is driven into the ground by hitting the “heel” with a sledgehammer. The angle of inclination is about 30° to the soil surface. Then, in the process of pulling the cable, the device is held with a handle resembling the handles of a conventional plow. A large lever allows a person to hold the anchor at a given angle.

Georgian winch anchor works quite well on all types of loose waterlogged soils.

What else are there

In addition to the described design, other types of anchors are also used, many of which are easily made by hand. After all, what is an anchor for a winch? A device that has good grip on the ground. In some cases, when the car is not too heavy, and there is an area with fairly dense soil nearby, as an anchorthe usual scrap hammered to a sufficient depth will do quite well. Two crowbars driven side by side give twice as much force. And if there are a dozen of them?

In addition to handicraft anchors of this type, there are also factory-made ones.

The plow was not in vain mentioned in the previous chapter. Some types of anchors for winches almost exactly copy this agricultural tool. The only difference is that the device is specially designed in such a way as to "burrow" into the ground as quickly and reliably as possible.

The industrially manufactured anchor plow can be easily dismantled and folded into the trunk, taking up minimal space.

Trofi-Fi type anchors are also popular among off-road enthusiasts.

Some designs are not much different from ship anchors.
