When renovating an apartment, drywall is second only to wallpaper in popularity. An important role is played by the dimensions of drywall when choosing it, since the installation technology and the convenience of finishing depend on them.
Types of drywall
Depending on the thickness of the drywall sheet (gypsum plasterboard) and its properties (moisture-resistant, fire-resistant, universal), there are three main areas of its application: ceiling, wall and arched. GKL types are also distinguished by the type of edge (straight, semicircular, rounded or thinned), which is usually indicated in the sheet marking.
It is expedient to finish various surfaces from different types of plasterboards, which have not only different thicknesses, but also different lengths. With all this, the standard size of drywall provides a single width for all types of drywall - 1.2 meters.
Dimensions of different types of drywall
To easily and efficiently make repairs, you need to know the dimensions of drywall designed for different areas. For example, for the device of shelves or niches it is better to usethe smallest sheets, and for the device of arches or radius bends on the ceilings - the thinnest.
The most flexible and elastic is arched drywall, which has a sheet thickness of only 6.5 millimeters. With its help, round, semicircular, curved openings are sheathed.
Wall drywall is most in demand today, since the standard size of a drywall sheet, 12.5 mm wide, is suitable both for installation on walls and for internal partitions, boxes, niches, shelves.
The biggest controversy among repairers arises over the thickness of the ceiling GKL. It is clear that you want to reduce the weight of the ceiling structure, save on profiles, which is why most people use plasterboard sheets 9 mm thick for the ceiling. But manufacturers claim that it is more reasonable to also put a wall sheet on the ceiling.
How drywall dimensions affect structure weight
Although drywall sizes are offered in a wide range, standard sheets of 6, 5 (9, 5 or 12, 5) x120x2500 (2700, 3000 or 3300) mm are still more in demand. However, manufacturers also offer non-standard sizes: small sheets exactly half the size of the standard 1200x600x12.5 mm, which are convenient to work with on walls of different heights, or with an increased thickness of 18, 20 and even 24 mm, which are used in rooms that require increased wear resistance and strength.
For the installation of partitions, it is better to take sheets of greater length, manufacturers offer drywall sizes up to 4.8 meters in length. For radius partitions, experts advise using two layers of 9.5 mm sheets.
When covering walls and ceilings with gypsum boards, it often becomes necessary to know how many sheets will be needed and what the weight of the structure will be. The table shows the data for a standard wall sheet.
Sheet dimensions (mm) |
Weight (kg) |
Area (m2) | |
Standard 1.25 cm wall drywall sheet | 1200х2500 | 26 | 3 |
1200x2700 | 28, 1 | 3, 24 | |
1200х3000 | 31, 2 | 3, 6 | |
1200x3300 | 34, 3 | 3, 96 |
If the ceiling is calculated, then, for example, 3 m2 ceiling from a standard 9.5 mm sheet will weigh five kilograms less. Accordingly, the whole construction will be lighter.
