Surface painting is the easiest and most affordable way to protect structures and building elements from environmental influences. In the interior, staining gives a harmonious look and increases the durability of wooden floors, doors or other elements of any material. At the moment, alkyd paint is the most popular type of paintwork material due to its merits and availability.
Types of alkyd paints by composition
All paints are a complex composition consisting of a pigment, a binder, a solvent and auxiliary components to give an additional effect. In its composition, alkyd paint is also a mixture of the above components. According to the type of binder component, alkyd-based paints are divided into the following groups: oil (the binder is ordinary drying oil) and enamel (based on alkyd varnishes).
Alkydno markingoil paints - "MA", it is indicated on the bank. When using glyptal and pentaphthalic drying oils in the manufacture of the coloring composition, the corresponding markings "GF" and "PF" are indicated on the can.
All oil paints, including alkyd oil paint, contain a small amount of varnish. The dried layer of the coloring composition is relatively weak for mechanical stress. Such paints are gradually losing their popularity.
Enamel paints have higher performance. Namely:
- fast drying;
- resistance to chemically aggressive substances;
- high wear rate;
- sustainable.
The most commonly used enamels are pentaphthalic (marking "PF"), less often - glyphthalic (marking "GF"). Their basis is alkyd-pentaphthalic and alkyd-glyphthalic varnish, respectively. Their distinctive ability is high water resistance due to the formation of a thin high-strength film. Alkyd-urethane paint stands out in particular, which is ideal for painting iron structures exposed to the environment. This paint covers the surface of pipelines, industrial equipment, railway cars, etc. It is also suitable for interior painting work - painting radiators, water pipes, concrete and brick walls, wooden structures and decorative elements.
Types of alkyd paints by purpose
Each alkyd paint is a product that is produced in accordance with the relevant GOST with marking. On a can of paint, a code of two letters and three numbers is indicated. The letters indicate the type of coloring agent by composition, the first digit - the scope and purpose, the last two - the catalog code. The decoding of the first digits by purpose is as follows:
- "0" - priming compounds;
- "1" - for external use only;
- "2" - for use in interior work;
- "3" - temporary coloring compositions, the main use of which is for marking or sealing;
- "4" - waterproof coloring compounds;
- "5" - a special paint designed to protect objects and structures from rodents;
- "6" - products with increased resistance to gasoline and oils;
- "7" - chemical resistant paint;
- "8" - products with increased heat resistance;
- "9" - paints with electrical insulating properties.
Matte enamel
It happens that to create harmony in the interior or to implement some design ideas, you need to create a matte surface. Special alkyd paint can do this. In addition, it has other useful qualities: it withstands temperatures in the range from -50 to +600 degrees Celsius, it is economically consumed (depending on the quality of the surface, the consumption is from 80 to 170 g / m2), it can be diluted with a common solventsolvent or white spirit. And one more advantage is the paint, the price of which is affordable for almost anyone who wants to buy it.
Spray paints
For ease of use and transportation, alkyd paints are produced in aerosol cans. They are easy to use, just spray on the surface to be painted. There is no need for a brush or roller, thinner and spray gun. For painting a small area in places with difficult access, such spray cans are indispensable.
Alkyd paint tips
Regardless of the chosen method of application, there is one nuance that must be taken into account. The fact is that alkyd paint is a composition that will not hide small defects on the surface, but even emphasize them. Therefore, it is necessary to make a perfect leveling of the surface before painting, that is, puttying followed by grinding.
Immediately before applying a layer of coloring composition, it is recommended to treat the surface with a primer. This will improve the adhesion of the paint itself to the surface and give it extra strength.
If alkyd paint has thickened in a can, it can be diluted with white spirit or solvent. The volume of thinner must not exceed 10% of the paint volume.
