What if it is impossible to measure the temperature at a distance with ordinary thermometers? After all, they are designed for contact determination of the degree of the environment, water or body. It was for this purpose that the infrared temperature sensor was invented in the 60s of the last century in America. A little later, the tool appeared on the Russian markets. The miracle thermometer received a different name - a pyrometer or an infrared gun.

Pyrometer is a modern device for measuring the temperature of absolutely any object. The definition is based on an infrared sensor that allows you to read infrared radiation from an object. Further, it reorganizes the obtained indicator into the usual temperature one and displays it on the meter screen. Capable of operating at temperatures up to 1000 degrees.

Features of work

The main components of an infrared temperature sensor are:

  • lens;
  • receiver;
  • display.

When the infrared receiver is heated, a voltage is created or the resistance changes,which is converted into familiar Celsius or Fahrenheit numbers, and the result is displayed on an electronic display.

For optimal determination of temperature, the electronic device must be directed to the object and triggered (press the button). In this case, the distance between the pyrometer and the measured object may be different, depending on the manufacturer and model. This indicator should be written in the instructions for the infrared gun.

Pros and cons

The advantages of an infrared temperature sensor include:

  • possibility to measure an object of very high temperatures;
  • use at a distance;
  • suitable for all materials;
  • minimum error;
  • safety when working with dangerous measurement objects;
  • easy to use.

It is worth noting the disadvantages of the device:

  • cannot be used if the area of the object is smaller than the control area;
  • for each measured material, the pyrometer settings must be changed.
