Additional elements, in particular for the roof, can increase its strength, tightness, extend the life of the structure, and also decorate the building from the outside.
The main material for their manufacture is steel (galvanized or polymer).
Important: experts recommend buying such components together with the main ones or picking them up individually if the roof is already installed.
Varieties of additional elements
The most common accessories are:
- Konek. It is also called a plank. It is installed at the intersection of sheets of slate or other materials. The main function is to stiffen the roof and prevent moisture from getting inside. Also, the skate is able to prevent the formation of condensate and slow down the wear of the structure. There are flat, semicircular and figured types (for example, trapezoidal). It comes with various connectors andtees for joints. The set also includes various end caps (cone, hip and flat).
- Corner. Such an element is installed between the slopes of the roof sheets. The main purpose is to drain water from the joints.
- Top and bottom valley planks. These corner structures are also installed at the joints of the roof and perform a protective function.
- Small and large cornice strips protect the lines from moisture. They are installed under the main roofing before the gutter is installed and the lead material is installed.
- End and wind slats. Are established at the last stage of a covering of slings. Designed to protect the structure from wind and bad weather conditions.
- Snow guard. The installation of this device is not mandatory, but in some cases it can save the he alth and life of people from sliding snow masses.
- Ventilation elements and chimneys. Various communications outlets over the roof are also equated to additional elements.
- Strips (joining, docking and finishing) are also important for coverage.
Specifications
The manufacture of additional elements, such as a ridge knot, for example, requires special attention. An important feature is that the mentioned devices can be made in various shapes and sizes. So, a standard ridge element has a length of 2 meters, and a semicircular element is made with a radius of 70 to 125 mm.
After acquiring such a component, it is not worth cutting off the extra end, because the removal of the wing of the skate should not beless than 115 mm.
The wind wing bar measures at least 100mm.
Despite the rather wide range of models, manufacturers produce any design based on the wishes of the customer.
What to consider when choosing additional roofing elements
First of all, you need to pay attention to such points:
- Different elements of the build have their own purpose and are by no means interchangeable.
- One and the same type of fixture can have several designs or modifications at once.
- When selecting it should be taken into account that the finishing material must be identical to the material of the roof.
- To facilitate the choice, a roofing project should be drawn up.
- If the roof has an unusual shape, it is possible to make any element to order.
Which roof structures are best?
It is impossible to determine with accuracy which additional elements are optimal.
Selection of certain components depends on the main coating material:
- If this is slate, then galvanized steel products will be the most suitable.
- For euro slate, special elements are offered, which are made with a bend of 20◦ (for the best fit).
- Roofs made of bituminous tiles are suitable for polymer-coated steel extensions, as well as plastic components.
- If the roof is made of natur altiles, you should select components from the same material.
- Additional elements for corrugated board are presented in the widest range, for this reason they do not require much effort in the search and selection.
- Add-ons for composite tiles are made of steel and covered with crumbs of the appropriate color, so it is best to make a selection of components before installing the roof.
Required additional elements for new buildings. Features, advantages and disadvantages
For old-built houses, such devices are not at all necessary, because the roof structure provides for natural ventilation. If we are talking about new buildings, then much attention should be paid to the additional element - the aerator.
Despite the wide range of structures that protect the attic from moisture, it partially gets inside, where it gradually accumulates. To dry the rafter system in many coatings, an aerator is installed.
Its design is outwardly similar to a chimney, and among the advantages are:
- regular ventilation of the roof;
- remove excess moisture and condensation;
- prevent flat roof defects.
Such a device works on the difference between internal and atmospheric pressures. A specially designed hood is able to increase natural draft. Thanks to these features, the device works more efficiently.
Important: steel aerators are able to perform their functionsin a wide temperature range from minus 50 to +90◦С. Continuous ventilation systems are installed in large areas.
Installation of elements
Before purchasing components, you should consider the roofing material, dimensions, type and the need to install related structures. At the installation stage, it is important to determine in what order the elements should be installed. For example, you need to pay attention to the following points:
- The skate must be installed at the final stage.
- It is very important to observe the correct installation of thermal and waterproofing of the roof using additional elements (sandwich panels).
- Do not apply any excess sealant or sealing material.
- The wind bar should be as wide as possible.
Installation of the roof, as well as the installation of individual extensions, is a very complex and responsible process. The further atmosphere in the house, as well as the service life of materials, will depend on the quality of the assembly. To avoid improper installation, it is better to entrust the roof to professionals.
