In our article you will learn how to make a beautiful and functional brick brazier with your own hands. Photos of structures and ordering schemes will also be given in the material. It should be noted that portable barbecues are good, but only in nature. If you prefer to cook a barbecue exclusively at home, then it is much better to use stationary structures. In terms of area, a brick brazier will take no more than 1-3 m 2.
It is also possible to install corner structures with a hob and hearth. Even the sink can be placed next to the barbecue. But the simplest barbecues, as you know, have only one thing - a hearth and a grate (you can do without it). Even an inexperienced bricklayer can cope with all the work - this is not a very difficult matter. Below we will consider the most popular options for barbecues.
The easiest brick brazier
As you understand, any brick structure needs a foundation. And the grill is no exception. It is highly not recommended to install even the simplest types of barbecues on the ground. The use of slab and strip foundations is allowed. The first type is much better, as it is more reliable and with large temperature differences, the entire masonry will not fall apart.
The foundation should be larger than the size of the building, by about 10-15 cm. First you need to remove the top layer of soil. You may have to deepen the pit by 10-15 cm. The bottom must be leveled and rammed. Pour a layer of gravel on it (thickness is about 10 cm). Ramming again, and it is better to do this with a vibrating plate. It is quite difficult to do this work manually. Please note that the strip foundation should have a height of about 25-30 cm. And the thickness of the slab foundation should be about 10 cm.
Features of building a foundation
Install the formwork - its type depends on the type of foundation. To increase strength, it is necessary to reinforce with rods, the diameter of which is 10-12 mm. In the case of using a strip foundation, it is necessary to lay two strips around the entire perimeter. When installing a slab foundation, you need to make a kind of cage. The rods are laid across and along in increments of 0.2 m. The pouring is carried out with concrete made using cement grade M-200 and higher.
If the ambient temperature is over 20 degrees, then the foundation will gain strength in about a week. Only after a while you can start laying. After drying, you need to lay waterproofing on top of the foundation (it is allowed to use any rolled material, even a banal roofing material). Then it is desirable to lubricate with liquidwaterproofing mortar - mastic based on bitumen. Only after that you can start construction.
A little about materials and sizes
You can make a brick brazier yourself even if you do not have enough experience. This is a small building, shaped like the letter "P". It has two main parts - a table and a brazier. The design is very simple and, if necessary, it can be improved at any time. For example, add another section next to it, make ledges under the grate if you plan to cook a lot of meat.
You need to rely on the following dimensions when manufacturing:
- Depth - about 0.9 m.
- Width – 1.8 m.
- Height - 1 m.
For masonry, it is allowed to use ceramic bricks or fireclay (ShA-8 brand). On average, 202 bricks should go. Well, let's see how to make a beautiful brick brazier in the country with your own hands.
Start laying barbecue
The lower part of the brazier (up to the 5th row) is laid on a mortar made from cement and sand. Proportion 1:3, it is allowed to add one part of lime. But in the part where there will be a high temperature, you need to use a different solution. It is made from clay and sand. The proportion depends directly on the quality of the clay (it can be oily, skinny, normal). The density of the solution should be normal - not very liquid, but not thick.
Work order and ordering
This brazier is built from bricks that are laid on the bed. Two rows of bricks protrude, they are laid across and serve as a support for the grid and the brazier. You can lay bricks on a narrow part (on a spoon), in which case the brazier will rise a little higher. The lower part is used to store firewood or coals.
Rows need to be laid in a dressing, a slight offset is needed. This will require halves of bricks, which are easiest to cut with a grinder. The first six rows form the table and the brazier. But the 7th and subsequent rows fit only in the part in which the brazier is located directly. When laying, be sure to maintain the same thickness of the seam - about 5-8 mm.
Masonry Features
In order not to damage the geometry of the structure during installation, it is necessary to tighten the laces. According to them, the alignment of all rows occurs. But be sure to control all the bricks and rows with a level. Try to check more often with a plumb line (lace and weight) the verticality of all corners and walls. If you do not trust the plumb line, use the same level for this purpose. But pay attention to the fact that the simplest plumb line has an error less than that of the building level. And now in more detail about how to make a brick brazier with your own hands.
The laying order of the rows is quite simple, but sometimes there are questions about drying. If the weather is dry outside, then the brazier should “infuse” for at least three days. Only after that it is allowed to kindle inhim fire. And then, you need to do it gradually. For 2-3 days, you need to heat the brazier in a gentle mode, use only a small amount of thin firewood. Only after such preparation can you start cooking kebabs.
But if the rains are coming, and the shed over the brazier has not yet been erected, you will have to cover the building with oilcloth. The brazier should settle for at least a week, only after that you can start drying. Make a small fire, try not to keep it going for too long. Drying is carried out for 3-4 days. After this period, you can begin to actively use the building.
Brick barbecue in the gazebo
And now let's imagine that you already have a gazebo that you want to modernize a little, namely, put a beautiful and functional barbecue in it. And if you decide to put a barbecue in the gazebo, the design proposed above will not be able to work fully, since all the smoke will be inside, right under the roof.
In this case, you need to use designs with a chimney. If necessary, you can put a cauldron in a brick grill. Of course, you cannot make such an accessory with your own hands, but you can buy it in a store without any problems.
This brazier is much more difficult, but anyone can still make it. Of course, it is recommended to practice on simpler buildings first. But in our design, which we will consider below, the vault is even, and it is very simple to make it. Especially if you have very little experience.
A little about sizes and materials
This building is notlarge size:
- Depth about 75 cm.
- Width 1.5 m.
- Height from the base to the edge of the pipe - 217.5 cm.
Sizes may vary slightly. For laying the walls, solid ceramic bricks are used. It is not necessary, but desirable, to use fireclay bricks for laying the brazier (the same SHA-8 as in the previous example).
The "cold" belt is the first 11 rows, counting from the base of the brazier. For laying it, a solution of cement and sand is used, the ratio is 1: 3. When laying the so-called "hot" belt, only a solution of clay and sand is used. The seam must be the same size - 5-7 mm. Even when making a stove in a brick brazier with your own hands, you must observe the thickness of the seam.
The design of such a brazier is divided into three "cold" compartments - they store firewood, coals, various household items. But the “hot” zone, which is above the 12th row, is already a brazier and a discharge pipe. A skewer or barbecue grill is placed in the brazier. It all depends on what your preferences are.
Ordering the barbecue in the gazebo
As you understand, the presented ordering is somewhat more complicated, so some explanations will have to be given. The first row must be laid out on the same level with the floor of the gazebo. If the foundation is low, then you will have to raise it a little with the “zero” side. Bricks are laid in such a way that a reliable foundation is obtained.
Next, you need to lay four rows, be suretheir ligation is done. These rows will form the so-called "woodcutter". Fuel for the barbecue will be stored here. On top of the fifth row, you need to lay three strips of metal (thickness not less than 3 mm, width 5 cm). They will serve as a support for the bricks of the next row. There are no features in the laying of 6 and 7 rows. But you will not soon make a brick brazier with your own hands, the instructions for building a building are quite long.
The 8th row of masonry forms two chambers for storing various household supplies. Constantly control the seams, they should not coincide with the bottom rows. Only in this case a strong and reliable wall will turn out. If necessary, the bricks must be cut with a grinder into suitable pieces. And now let's talk about how the upper part of the barbecue is formed.
Barbecue brazier
Starting from the 11th row, you do not need to put a wall in the middle, but on top it is necessary to lay strips of metal. It is on them that the next row rests, which covers the compartment for household supplies. When laying 12 rows, one feature must be taken into account - the bricks lie flat on the back wall, and on the front it is necessary that they protrude by 30 mm. All these requirements must be observed when installing brick barbecues with your own hands. The step-by-step instructions presented in our article allow you to reduce labor costs.
Row 13 is also solid, it is on it that the brazier will be placed in the future. The row size is slightly larger than the previous one. Now you can start forming the "hot" zone- here the fire will burn with a blue flame. This zone has a slightly smaller size, and for greater resistance to fire, it must be laid out with fireclay bricks. Be sure to put it on the narrow part.
For fireclay bricks, the dimensions are slightly different from ceramic ones, but you don’t need to pay attention to this trifle. The main thing is to observe the alternation when laying the firebox.
Shaping the pipe
When you get to row 21, you need to install a steel corner on top of it. Stainless steel is allowed. Dimensions - 50x50 mm or 40x40. The length should be such that it lies from the middle of the left brick to the center of the right one. It is this corner that will later serve as a support for the pipe. Without it, it will not be possible to assemble a brazier from a brick with your own hands. The photo given in the article allows you to understand how the brazier and chimney are formed.
Row 22 is laid using fireclay bricks. Also, the front wall is already beginning to appear here (it is she who relies on a stainless steel corner). The size of the row is slightly larger - the bricks hang over the corner by 30 mm. The next row is even wider, and then you need to go down. With each row, you need to reduce the channel so that by 30 the pipe is already fully formed. It must rise above the roof by at least 0.5 m.
Drying construction - at least a week. Only after this period can you begin to kindle a fire in the brazier. Now you know how to make a brick brazier with your own hands. Photos of the orders perfectly illustrate the work.
