Decorative varnish consists of a set of substances that form a thin, almost imperceptible film on the surface of the coated product. In addition, the compositions do not dissolve in water and organic solvents. After the decorative varnish has completely dried, in addition to additional strength, the object receives a pronounced shine.
Depending on the scope of use, varnishes are divided into groups. Since we are talking about a decorative coating, we will have to familiarize ourselves with paintwork materials for wood and stone.
Requirements for varnishes on wood
Decorative wood varnish enhances the texture and beauty of wood while maintaining the aesthetic appearance of the material. LKM is used when wood or stone needs to be given special decorative properties and appearance.
A special advantage of wood covered with decorative varnish is protection against decay, mold and fungus, corrosion, as well as good thermal insulation. Color, thickness and lacquer film are equally important in preserving the texture of wood.
What are wood varnishes and how do they differ
Highlight varnishes:
- Oil oils, often used in woodworking and originally based on natural resins.
- Based on alkyds - glyphthalic and pentaphthalic synthetic resins with the addition of a desiccant.
- Alcohol, giving the surface a lasting shine.
- Alkydo-urea, containing a solution of alkyd and amino-formaldehyde resins.
- Polyester, consisting of a whole chemical set of components.
- Based on acrylic dissolved in organic solvents.
- Polyurethane with exceptionally high strength characteristics.
- Water-based polyurethane - an innovative material invented relatively recently.
Features of stone lacquer
Stone, tile, ceramic surfaces indoors are less exposed to water and moisture than those that are outside. At the same time, the internal microclimate of the room no less affects the condition of the material.
Wet effect stone lacquers create an exceptionally durable transparent film layer that enhances the texture and color saturation of the surface treated with a decorative coating. In this case, the object externally becomes silky.
Which varnish is suitable for covering stone surfaces
Acrylic coatings are ideal. According to the type of base, there are water and organic (solvent-based). The former are environmentally friendly, as they do not emit a toxic odor into the air and do not evaporate. Concerningorganic acrylic lacquer, it performs better but is not as safe.
Acrylic decorative lacquer is the best option for covering stones.
What properties does the material have
Both organic and water soluble formulations are characterized by:
- possibility of application in interior and exterior decoration;
-
significant strengthening of the stone surface, whether it be:
- brick;
- paving slabs;
- concrete;
- natural or artificial stone;
- other mineral based coating.
- weather protection;
- surface hydrophobization;
- decorative appeal: color saturation, luster;
- high adhesion;
- poor sensitivity to biological and chemical irritants;
- unexpressed reaction to temperature changes and UV influence;
- high resistance to mechanical damage;
- weak susceptibility to erasure;
- prolonging the life of stone products.
Decorative varnish for wood and coatings for stone are modern finishing materials that give new properties to treated surfaces. Such products will last much longer than ordinary ones that are not covered with a protective layer.
