If there is a need for a garden storm, and there are no free financial resources for the purchase, you can try to make it yourself with the help of simple tips. If you make a garden drill with your own hands, using improvised materials, its cost will decrease by an order of magnitude.
There are several separate components in this device: the drill (auger) itself, which makes a hole, a stand (metal pole) and a handle.
Let's now try to make a garden drill with our own hands, following the order of precedence. We will make a drill for poles, but with the help of this article, you can make any other one.
Before starting work, it is necessary to collect all the necessary material that may be required: high strength sheet metal, a two-meter sleeve and a metal drill. If the garden drill is planned to be used for other purposes in the future, then it is advisable to make augers with different diameters.
Cutting several blanks for the future blade from sheet material. If, according to further plans, a garden auger drill will be used to drill holes for a certain diameter of the pillars, then the diameter of the auger shouldexceed the post diameter by 5 mm.
Several through holes are drilled in the center of our workpiece, which should be 1-1.5 mm larger than the diameter of our rack, under which it is recommended to use smooth reinforcement. To make the reinforcement smooth, you can process it on a lathe. In the rack we made, it is necessary to drill two holes across with the help of a vise, after which a thread is cut into them with a tap. You will need these threaded holes to hold the blade.
Now we need to return to the blades we prepared and continue working with them. According to the preparation of sheet metal for a garden drill, we cut a radius with a grinder, the presence of which will be required when “turning” a flat blade into a screw blade. The lower part of the finished blade must be sharpened at 45-60 degrees.
Having skipped 10 mm distance from the edge of the sleeve, we proceed to making a flat on it with a 3 mm depth, and at the same time we sharpen the end at a 30-degree angle until a point is formed. Using a grinder, we make small helical grooves in the lower part. When drilling holes, not only soft soil comes across, but hard ground can also be encountered, so we will need to attach a drill to the bottom, the diameter of which should not exceed or be less than the diameter of the sleeve.
Now there is just a little left - to make a comfortable handle and the garden drill will be finished with your own hands. It is not recommended to use welding to connect the handle to the base, it is better to use fixing bolts. If the handleT-shaped, then you can attach it to the thread. We may need to drill a lot deeper during operation than we expected, so attaching a handle to the bolts is a simple tip to make the job easier.
Our garden auger can also be used for digging wells, just need to add a few extra threaded posts and connect them with bushings, but keep in mind that good quality bushings are required for working at depth.
As you can see, making a drill yourself is not that difficult. To facilitate the drilling process, the drill is periodically pulled out and rid of it from the ground. To increase the service life, you can paint it with anti-corrosion paint, and use durable metal to make blades, since all the load is given to it.
