Soft roofing is one of the most popular types of roof protection against adverse environmental factors. There are several varieties of it, and consequently, several styling technologies. We will talk about how exactly the installation of a soft roof is done in a particular case, later in the article. This material can be classified into three main varieties.

Roll soft roof

Fixed with bituminous mastic. An example of this type of coating is the usual roofing material. The advantages of this type of coating include, first of all, low weight and ease of installation. The disadvantages are a large number of joints.

Soft tiles

This is the same roofing material, but cut into pieces with petals imitating real tiles. Possessing all the advantages and disadvantages of a conventional roofing material, but at the same time it has a beautiful appearance, as it can be painted in any color with an imitation of a shadow from real tiles.

Welded softroofing

Flated roofing is also sold in rolls, but is attached by melting the mastic already applied to the material when heated with a gas burner. The advantages of this type of soft roof include light weight, strength and elasticity, as well as resistance to UV rays and significant temperature fluctuations. Installation of a soft roof (a photo of the process can be seen on the page below) is somewhat more difficult than gluing roofing material. This can be attributed to some of the disadvantages of the material.

Sprayed and painted

Painting and spraying soft roofing is a liquid waterproof substance that, when applied to the roof, forms a thick flexible protective layer. The undoubted advantage of this type of soft roof is elasticity and strength. However, due to the need to use expensive equipment, such roofs are more often installed on the roofs of industrial facilities, as well as apartment buildings.

Installation of roll roofing

First, let's look at how the installation of a soft roof of a roll variety is done. Experts recommend doing this work with an assistant. The roofing material is pre-cut and the strips are left to mature until the morning. This is necessary in order to facilitate their installation on the roof. The crate for any soft roofing material must be solid. You can make it, for example, from plywood. The order of installation of roofing material is as follows:

  1. The roof is smeared with bituminous mastic on gentle slopes - stripes, on steep slopes - solid.
  2. Presses tightly against the smeared area anda sheet of roofing material is smoothed out (like wallpaper).
  3. They are raised and additionally smeared to a depth of about 15 cm of the edge of the sheet.
  4. The next strip is pasted.

Thus, a fairly reliable soft roof is obtained. The installation instructions for this variety will be incomplete if you do not add that one layer of roofing material will certainly not save you from leaks. The fact is that this material is very weak in rupture and is easily damaged. The number of layers depends on the angle of inclination of the roof slopes. For example, on a sloping roof (at 15o), four are used. The position of the slopes, the greater should be the overlap between the sheets in the horizontal direction. For a slope of 15 degrees, it must be at least 12 cm. Two varieties of roofing material are produced - without sprinkling and with sprinkling. The first type is used for gluing intermediate layers, the second - the upper last one.

After the installation of the soft roof roof is made, a small test is carried out for the strength of the fastening. To do this, they simply try to tear the material away from the crate somewhere in the corner. If it holds tight, it means that everything is done correctly.

Installation of soft tiles

Now let's see how a tiled soft roof is mounted. The installation technology in this case is as follows:

  1. Pre-roofing is covered with a special waterproofing membrane that comes with the tiles. They also fasten it to roofing nails in strips inhorizontal direction. At the same time, the top of each sheet is fixed with roofing nails in increments of 40 cm along the top edge and 10 cm along the bottom.
  2. After the entire roof is covered, the valleys are covered with a strip of the same material in the vertical direction. It is also attached to roofing nails in 20 cm increments on both sides.
  3. At the next stage, they begin to install the eaves and end strips made of metal, which are also usually supplied in the kit. They are made of not too thick material and can be fixed on the same nails. Fixation is carried out in increments of 10 cm with a “snake”.
  4. Next, a valley carpet is laid. This element always has the same color as the roofing soft tile itself. Fix it over the waterproofing strip on nails in 10 cm increments.
  5. Installation of a soft roof continues with the installation of a cornice tape. It is made from the same material as the valley carpet. They fix it on nails over the cornice strip, indented from the edge by two centimeters. First, the protective film is removed from the wrong side.
  6. The next step is the actual installation of a soft roof - tiles. You need to use strips with petals from several packages at once (4-6). This is necessary for color alignment. A protective film is removed from each strip and pressed with an adhesive layer to the roof surface.
  7. Further, additional fixation is performed with roofing nails, one above each cutout and at the same level along the edges.
  8. Each next row is mounted in such a way that the petals of the tilewere located on the same level with the cutouts of the strips of the previous row.
  9. Installation of tiles starts from the middle of the slope, moving towards the edges. At the ends, the excess part is cut off and the edge is glued to the waterproofing carpet with bituminous mastic.
  10. In the same way, glue the tiles to the valley carpet, cutting them through a piece of plywood and leaving an uncovered part of the carpet 15 cm on both sides of the valley axis.

Installation of built-up roofing

Laminated roofing is also available in rolls. Its difference from roofing material is that bituminous mastic has already been applied to the wrong side of the strips. Most often, glass isol is used to cover roofs. Installation of a soft roof of this type is usually performed by three people. This operation consists of the following steps:

  1. The crate is evenly primed with a layer of bitumen diluted with gasoline.
  2. Sheets are stacked vertically from top to bottom. First, the uppermost edge of the strip at the ridge is glued. It is heated with a burner and pressed against the crate.
  3. Then the roll is rolled up again (bituminous layer out).
  4. One person hooks it, gradually rolling it out.
  5. The second person, as it rolls, heats the upper bitumen layer with a burner. The latter begins to melt and forms a liquid adhesive bead between the roof surface and the roll.
  6. Next, start gluing the next one. The overlap between adjacent should be 15 cm.

Thus paste over the entire roof. As with any other softroofing material, protection will be effective only when several layers are glued. In intermediate layers, the deposited material can also be located across the roof. This is how a tiled soft roof is attached. The technology, as you can see, is not particularly complicated.

Types of sprayed roofing material

As a waterproofing coating, in this case, a mixture is usually used that hardens in air and forms a strong protective film of various thicknesses. Only three of its varieties are produced:

  1. Single component. Sprayed onto the surface with high pressure equipment.
  2. Two-component. During the application, the polymer-bitumen composition and the hardener are mixed. Under pressure, it is fed into the sprayer and applied with a layer of the required thickness.
  3. Bitumen-polymer composition. It is applied to the surface with a spatula or roller. In private housing construction, this variety is used most often, as it does not require the use of expensive equipment.

How to apply bitumen-polymer composition on the roof

Next, consider how exactly the bituminous soft roof is mounted. Installation instructions:

  1. The old coating is removed from the roof.
  2. The surface is cleaned of dirt.
  3. The primer layer is smeared with a brush, which is necessary to increase the adhesive properties of the surface.
  4. The roof is smeared with bitumen-polymer mastic also using a brush or roller.

In order for the protective layer to turn outas reliable as possible, the roof is smeared with several layers. The topmost one usually wakes up for greater reliability with coarse sifted sand.

How much will it cost to protect the roof with a soft roof

Thus, we have found out how a soft roof is attached. The installation technology of this material is elementary, and therefore the installation can easily be done independently. Next, let's figure out how much such roof protection can cost. The price depends primarily on the type of material used, as well as, of course, the number of sprayed or glued layers. However, in general, such roofs are somewhat cheaper than others made from other materials.

For example, a 15-meter roll of roofing material costs about 200 rubles (for 2014). The width of the standard sample is one meter. Therefore, 1 m2 costs about 13 rubles. Accordingly, a square meter of a roof of its three layers is 40 rubles (excluding mastic). A square meter of glass isol costs about 30-50 rubles. Therefore, for 1 m2 in three layers, you will have to pay 100-150 rubles. Bitumen-based polymer mastic costs about 900 rubles per 10 kg. Its consumption per 1 m2 - 1 kg. That is, one square meter in one layer will cost 90 rubles.

These are the most budget options. The cost of installing a soft roof can be higher. In the event that the work is not carried out independently, of course, you will also have to pay hired specialists. In this case, the coverageroofing will cost even more. For example, two layers will cost at least 300 rubles.

As you can see, soft roofing is a fairly reliable material and not particularly difficult to install. If desired, you can perform an independent installation of a soft roof. The price for it, as you can see, is democratic.
