As the name implies, a furniture bolt serves to fasten individual parts of a structure together so that they form one whole. Such fasteners can be used not only at manufacturing plants, but also for direct assembly at home.
Bolt classification
In fact, there are a lot of bolts. But depending on the shape and size, they can be found in one or another area of production:
- in agriculture, share bolts are used, with the help of which attachments are mounted on equipment;
- in furniture production, respectively, furniture are used;
- in the field of road construction (when equipping highways with a fence), road bolts are used;
- only machine-building fasteners are taken to assemble cars.
Bolt shapes
For each area of production developed their own fasteners:
- Classic shape - the bolt has a head with six sides, and the reverse end is threaded. Through it, it is possible to connect two or more elements. Used together with nuts.
- Flange bolts. There is a "skirt" of a round shape, which is located at the base of the head, due to whichno need to use washers.
- Flip-up. Their complex shape has led to the use of such bolts for the installation of rigging devices.
- Anchor bolts. They provide end-to-end connection of elements. The increased strength of this fastening allows the use of these fasteners in places requiring high reliability.
- Eye bolts. These elements have a loop hat instead of the usual one. Cables are often attached to such bolts, as they can withstand the load on the entire axle well, evenly distributing it over the base.
Scope of furniture fittings
Previously, furniture sets were assembled using special wedges and dowels, but technology does not stand still, so these hardware came to replace them. Coupling bolt furniture used in production:
- sofas;
- beds;
- kitchen sets;
- armchairs and chairs;
- tables.
Such fasteners are often used in construction and repair, for example, for stairs or a wooden gazebo. If you plan to create a small wooden structure, such an element will also come in handy.
Working with wood
Since the home set is in most cases made of wood, the furniture bolt is designed specifically for this material. The most common in the furniture industry today are fiberboard and chipboard. Such metal fasteners allow you to withstand the mechanical loads that are placed on the furniture during its operation.
The popularity of these bolts is also due to the fact that they are not disposable. That is, in the process of moving, there is always the opportunity to disassemble the headset, and assemble it in a new place. And this applies not only to home, but also to office furniture.
Furniture bolt as a fastener is the basis of the arsenal of both factories and private furniture companies. In addition, it is quite simple to buy it, so even with self-assembly of the product, there are no problems in connecting the parts.
Characteristic of furniture bolts
Carbon steel is taken as the basis for the manufacture of such parts. The finished product has a zinc coating, which provides resistance to corrosion processes. In some cases, some types also chrome. It is also not uncommon to find a steel, brass or copper furniture bolt.
If the furniture is used for its intended purpose, while it is not subjected to excessive loads (they are not constantly assembled and disassembled), then the service life of such hardware will be more than one decade.
Depending on the purpose, the fasteners may have the following thread markings: M6, M8, M10 and M12. The length of such a bolt varies from 1.6 to 20 cm. Nuts and washers are often included with furniture bolts, which correspond in cross section to hardware.
Furniture bolt has several categories:
- Oversized round head fasteners.
- Furniture bolt with a mustache and a semicircular head.
- Tie screw.
- Flat head fasteners.
Types of furniture hardware
When assembling sofa structures and soft corners, a furniture bolt (GOST 7801) is used, which has a semicircular head and mustache. It is mounted in a pre-made hole with a hammer blow. The mustache helps to fix it so that the hardware does not have the ability to turn. Nuts and flat washers are additionally used for secure fastening. In this category, fittings in sizes 6x30 and 6x40 are very popular, the metric thread of which is M6, M8, M10 and M12, and the length is 3 and 4 cm.
Furniture bolt type "screw-tie" helps in working with plywood, plain and laminated chipboard. Provides accurate markings in fixtures. This type has a countersunk head, under which a special hole is prepared. In production, sizes 5x50 and 7x50 are widely used, with a white or yellow passivated coating, as well as with zinc sputtering.
For hidden places in the headset, a furniture bolt is used, which does not have any additional protective layers. But this is only in cases where the product will be in a room with an optimal level of humidity. In the opposite cases, it is recommended that the fittings have a zinc layer, which carries protective properties. If necessary, the bolts are also coated with chrome, giving them a more aesthetic appearance.
There is a separate category of bolts, which, due to their performance characteristics, are used not only inindustries, but also in the furniture industry. Din 603 is a furniture bolt that has a cylindrical rod with a head at the end. In this case, the thread can occupy the entire length or only a certain part. A nut is used to create connections, or a hole is prepared in advance in one of the parts to be fastened.
This type provides fastening strength, so it is used not only for wood, but also for metal structures. It can be found in road fenders and bridge guardrails. As for furniture, such a furniture bolt is more suitable for garden sets that are made of thin metal.
