Eyelets are a stylish and original decor for curtains that allows you to create neat, even folds. Curtains with grommets will organically fit into both classic interiors and modern styles. Eyelets can be installed on any type of fabric, however, it is recommended to additionally strengthen thin and airy materials with a grommet for curtains. It allows you to protect the fabric from excessive load in the places where the eyelets are attached, as well as create a beautiful wave of drapery. In this article, we will talk about the benefits and types of ribbons, as well as how to sew on a grommet without damaging the fabric.
Destination
The tape is a strip of nylon with glue applied to it, and is intended to enhance the strength of the fabric in the places where the eyelets are installed. Grommet tape is produced with a width of 5 to 15 cm. The width is selected, focusing on the outer diameter of the grommet plus 2-3 cm.
In addition to the direct purpose, the tape is used forincreasing the strength and density of other types of curtains and garments. Grommet tape has proven itself in Roman blinds due to the neat folds it creates. It is also used to strengthen Japanese curtains and extend their service life. Drapery ties will hold their shape better if the material is reinforced with a nylon strip, and embroidery and appliqué work on thin fabrics will look neater.
Benefits
Pros of use include:
- Versatility. The eyelet is suitable for any type of fabric.
- Ease of use. The strip is easy to attach to the fabric thanks to the adhesive impregnation.
- Strength. Capron increases the wear resistance of the fabric, prevents it from crumbling, and appliqués and embroidery look neater and smoother.
- Elasticity. Pleats reinforced with adhesive grommet look more uniform and beautiful.
Types of ribbons
Ribbons are made in different colors, but preference should be given to white nylon. It will not stain the fabric of the curtains when washed and will not change its color over time. For thin draperies, translucent grommet is suitable.
Kypron strips come with one-sided and two-sided application of glue. In the first case, the adhesive is applied to only one side of the tape. This strip is easy to use and suitable for any type of fabric. In the second version, both sides of the tape are covered with glue. It can also have a protective grid for the iron. When working with tape, glue firstone side, then remove the protective mesh, wrap the nylon with a cloth and iron the curtains again to fix the second side.
In addition to the above-mentioned varieties, there is the so-called imitation of the grommet. It is a strip of glue-based nylon, supplemented with textile loops for the eaves rod. Such a tape is first glued to the curtains, and then additionally fixed with a sewing line. This variety does not require the installation of eyelets, and the curtain is attached to the eaves due to loops.
Required materials and tools
Before you start gluing the tape to the curtain, you should prepare the necessary materials and tools. You will need:
- Tape of required width. The calculation is made based on the outer diameter of the eyelets planned for installation plus 2-3 cm.
- Iron. The glue on the tape melts due to exposure to high temperature and securely fixes the nylon on the fabric.
- Baking paper. Useful if a double-sided tape without a protective grid has been selected. Direct contact of the adhesive with the iron will permanently damage the soleplate.
- Sewing pins. They can be used to secure the tape so that it does not move during operation.
- Sewing machine. Needed for finishing seams.
Step by step instructions
The edge of the curtains is pre-treated, since after fixing the tape, this will be problematic. Two widths of tape are laid off from the seam andfold the fabric in half. With the help of an iron, the formed fold is smoothed out. Next, put the tape into the resulting pocket with an adhesive layer to the fabric and fix it with sewing pins to avoid shifts.
Using an iron, the tape is fixed to the fabric. The temperature should be selected according to the type of textile. The iron is moved in “steps”, in no case with sliding movements, slightly pressing for a firm fixation and lingering in one area for 8-10 seconds. Excessively long exposure to the iron or exceeding the required temperature contributes to the seepage of glue to the right side of the fabric. It is impossible to fix such a defect.
After the tape has been glued along its entire length, its edges are cut off and the pins are removed. If a double-sided tape was taken for work, the protective mesh is removed from it, wrapped with a cloth and ironed in the same way as described above.
At the final stage, you should additionally secure the tape with a sewing line. The latter is laid along the bottom of the tape at a distance of 1-2 mm from the edge.
The tape is securely fixed, now you can start installing the eyelets.
Care instructions
Textiles reinforced with adhesive nylon tape should be washed by hand or on a delicate cycle. It is important to maintain a low washing temperature so that the tape does not come off. It is also undesirable to wring out compacted areas, the tape may go astray, and it will be impossible to align it. The ironing mode is selected based on the type of fabricdraperies.
Experienced craftswomen do not recommend purchasing adhesive tape for future use, as over time the adhesive loses its properties and may change color when melted.
Grommet tape - nylon adhesive strip, which allows you to strengthen the fabric to obtain elastic, uniform folds. In addition, it is used to strengthen textile parts subject to intensive use. Compliance with the technology of gluing the tape and recommendations for the care of curtains will allow beautiful draperies to please the eyes of the owners for a long time.
