Planting dahlias in spring

The end of May is a great time to plant flowers outdoors. When is the best time to plant dahlias? Of course, in the spring to get beautiful buds at the end of summer. However, beware of frost. Some of the precautions are planting them in early summer. In case of frost, it is recommended to cover the plants with cardboard boxes or other covering material (with the exception of iron objects).

Spring planting

Dahlia takes root much better in spring. The root tubers of the plant are removed from storage sites in advance - in early May, they are cleaned of shrunken roots and diseased, rotten areas. Slices are sprinkled with "Fundazol" or charcoal. If buds are seen at the basal neck, you can start dividing the root tuber. In the case when the buds have not yet begun to grow, they are sent to germinate: they are placed in boxes on a thin layer of soil, sprinkled with peat, moss or other loose material on top, which is goodholds water. The containers are placed in the light (the temperature should be about 18-20 ° C). From time to time, the seed is watered, avoiding stagnant water. The buds will start growing in 2 weeks, then the root tubers can be divided. The division of dahlias is carried out not only to obtain more planting material, but also to improve its he alth, since when grown with too large bushes, the variety degenerates.

If the bush has several stems, then they need to be carefully loosened and separated. In the case when the uterine bush is dense, the root tuber is cut with a sharp knife so that each division is left with one or two buds. The cut areas are slightly dry. The resulting material is planted in the ground, unless, of course, the weather permits. Planting can also be done in nursery boxes. In May, dahlias can also be propagated by cuttings. When to plant dahlias by cuttings? Definitely, in early May, since it is at this time that the cuttings will quickly take root, which will take a maximum of a week.

Tips

The site for dahlias should be dug up in advance - either in autumn or early spring. When planting, only holes are dug thirty to forty centimeters deep, on the bottom of which compost or humus (about a quarter of a bucket), ash (about two tablespoons), superphosphate (about twenty grams) is poured; everything is thoroughly mixed.

Next to the hole for high dahlias, a strong stake (at least a meter high) is hammered, to whichin the process of growth, the grown stems are tied up. Tubers are planted in such a way that their necks are 4 cm below the ground. Dahlias, which are grown from cuttings, are planted deeper - 10 cm. The soil around the plants is carefully sprinkled, watered and mulched. We hope this article has helped you learn when to plant dahlias and how the process works.
