The Forstner drill is fundamentally different from the widespread and familiar to most spiral models. In the strict sense of this word, it would be more correct to designate it not as a drill, but as an end mill, because its cutting edge is located in the end part. This design feature makes it possible to make blind holes of large diameter with precise centering according to preliminary marking. This accuracy is ensured by the centering head of the tool. A well-sharpened Forstner drill guarantees a high finish on the inside of the hole. This type of drilling is also successfully used in large multi-operation centers in cabinet furniture production. Drilling, as a rule, is carried out for various types of mounting connectors, ties, hinges for furniture doors. The most running diameter of the entire range of such a tool is the Forstner-35 drill. It is also successfully used in traditional carpentry. In addition to holes for door and window fittings, they drill various natural wood defects - knots, resin pockets, mechanical damage to the structure and foreign inclusions. An element of pure wood, accurate in diameter, is inserted into the resulting hole with glue. It is cut with a special tool, the same diameter as the Forstner drill. You can usually buy it in any specialized stores.
This technology allows you to significantly save expensive dry wood and improve the quality of joinery. The negative points include the difficulty of sharpeningsimilar tool and its relatively high cost compared to conventional twist drills. But it pays off with the efficiency of its operation with significant production volumes.
