Every owner of an apartment or house wants to make their home more comfortable. It is impossible to realize this idea without comfortable furniture. A closet serves as a comfortable place to store things and clothes. With your own hands, you can make it from different materials, including improvised ones.
Why choose this cabinet
One of its main advantages are sliding doors that allow you to put bulky furniture even in a narrow corridor. Usually sliding wardrobes are made according to the size of the room. Fittings for wardrobes offered by stores are quite diverse. It allows you to expand the capabilities of the designer and the master. The most common are corner cabinets, built-in wardrobes and walk-through individual cabinets.
A built-in wardrobe is, in fact, a separate room. If you live in an old-style apartment, then it is probably not designed for the presence of a large number of furniture. In those timesthere was a shortage of materials, so the construction was carried out with narrow passages. If there is a swing door in such a corridor, then it will become like a barrier at a railway crossing. That is why a sliding wardrobe becomes the most acceptable option, on the doors of which you can place a mirror, which will additionally save space in the room and make the piece of furniture more functional. An excellent fitting will be a roller sliding system of the "Commander" type, which is produced by different manufacturers and has proven itself perfectly.
Selection of materials
If you decide to make a wardrobe with your own hands, then first you need to decide not only on its design features, but also on the materials at the base. It will be easier and cheaper to use laminated chipboard. It is offered for sale in a wide range, and the color palette will please even the most demanding consumer.
The work of the master will be facilitated by the ability to accurately calibrate the material. The back wall can be made of hardboard, and the doors will open with simple fittings for wardrobes.
Selection results
When purchasing a chipboard sheet, you should prefer a 16 mm canvas, the length of which is 2450 or 2750 mm. The height in this case will be 1830 mm. It is better to build on these dimensions so as not to crush the structure. Based on this, you can choose the dimensions of the cabinet: 2450 x 2400 x 650 mm. The depth is increased compared to the swing solution, but you should take an allowance for the slidingsystem and hanger space.
Blank size
Do-it-yourself wardrobe is quite simple if you follow the technology. Once the thickness of the material has been chosen, you can consider purchasing additional elements. Among them, melamine self-adhesive edge, which is 0.5mm thick.
But when cutting blanks, two sidewalls should be cut, the size of each of which will be 2433 x 650 mm. The cover located on top will be one, and its dimensions are 2400 x 650 mm. The bottom size will be 2367 x 650 mm. You will need a plinth - 2 pieces: 2367 x 100 mm.
Cut out two partitions measuring 1917 x 550mm. The top shelf will have the following dimensions: 2367 x 550 mm. The internal filling will consist of shelves, the size of each of them will be 778 x 550 mm. You will need three plinth box sides: 550 x 100 mm. The ribs of the box are required in the amount of two pieces, their dimensions are 1159 x 100 mm.
When making a wardrobe with your own hands, you will use hardboard. However, you won’t be able to find it entirely, and it simply won’t fit into the opening, so 3 parts should be used. The space between the shelf and the top cover will cover a horizontal sheet with the following dimensions: 2395 x 410 mm. A vertically oriented sheet with the following dimensions should be placed on one sash: 1940 x 800 mm. For two leaves you will need a vertical sheet with dimensions of 1940 x 1595 mm.
Expert advice
You will not be able to maintain the dimensions when sawinga whole sheet of chipboard. Doing these in the manufacture of a wardrobe in the hallway with your own hands at home is not worth it. Visiting a construction supermarket to purchase material, you will be able to use the services of specialists in the cutting service, who will need to show the detailing.
Facade system
If you are faced with the question of how to make a wardrobe with your own hands, you will have to think about the system of facades. For those craftsmen who are going to cut the sliding door system on their own, instructions have been invented. However, the task will not be easy.
Most modern firms that manufacture facade systems offer sliding door assembly services as a gift if you order the entire structure. The advantage of this approach is that the transportation of a large mirror with dimensions of 2300 x 800 x 5 mm, which is enclosed in an aluminum frame, will be easier than the same, but "bare" product.
Preparing fittings
Before you make a wardrobe with your own hands, you will need to purchase accessories. This is:
- confirmations;
- self-tapping screws;
- shoulder bars;
- rest pads;
- rod holders;
- hardboard nails.
Confirmations must measure 5 x 70 mm. Barbells for hangers can be sawn off at the store. They will need two pieces, and the length of each product will be 775 mm. Self-tapping screws must measure 4 x 16 mm.
Preparing parts forassembly
Sawing parts on your own is not the best idea, but you can still stick the edge yourself. It must be attached, wrapping the beautiful side up. Then the product is pressed to the surface with an iron heated by three quarters. Steam mode must be turned off. The glue should set, and after that the hot edge is pressed and smoothed with a dry rag so that its edges are properly glued. Excess material is removed with a dull knife so as not to damage the laminate. Inaccurate edges can be processed with fine-grained sandpaper.
Before starting work, do-it-yourself wardrobe drawings must be completed in advance. However, you can borrow them from the article. For the bottom, a base is assembled, which will consist of the details of the base. There is no need to glue them. Some home craftsmen claim that a plinth is not needed. But this belief is true for those who have never removed the pieces of a mirror that was accidentally broken. If you do not want unpleasant consequences, then at the assembly stage it is still necessary to raise the facade.
Assembling
Do-it-yourself wardrobe assembly is carried out on confirmations, so you need to have the appropriate tool available. The planes are drilled through. You have to make 8mm holes. Holes of 5 mm are made at the ends, while it is necessary to go deep by 60 mm. Drilling is carried out after marking, so in addition to the drill and drills, you should prepare a tape measure, a pencil and a direct constructioncorner.
Holes for shelf supports must be made at several levels at once, so that you can rearrange the shelves in height without drilling holes. If you do not have space to place the box on the front, you will need to pin the hardboard using a stool. The design must be strictly rectangular, it will be quite difficult to withstand all the parameters alone, so you need to take help.
It's rare that the floors are perfectly flat. An unloaded structure will “walk”, but you should not worry about this at this stage. The doors can be adjusted with a hex wrench and adjusting screws that will be located at the bottom of the front end.
Do-it-yourself home craftsmen often prepare drawings of wardrobes themselves. You can also benefit from their experience. Otherwise, you need to follow the technology. Using self-tapping screws 4 x 16 mm, screw the top rails for the wardrobe, positioning them flush with the edge of the cover. The lower ones are indented from the edge of the bottom by 10 mm. Everything will depend on the manufacturer of the system.
Before you start screwing the lower guides, you must install the stoppers, which are springs. Facades are best placed together. The assistant will have to bring the upper part of the facade into the guide, while the master at this time will get the wheels into the rut.
Fronts are adjusted by raising and lowering the lower roller. Closet loaded with things"will lead", which is perfectly normal. The final adjustment of the doors is carried out after a few days of active use of the furniture. At this stage, seals are fixed on the ends of the facades, which should cover the adjusting screws.
Profile Information
The profile for sliding wardrobes can be different. These components are offered for sale in a wide range. For example, for radius pieces of furniture, an aluminum profile is used, which can be lined with many types of plastic, each of which has its own texture, pattern and color. The profile can be based on steel. However, the aluminum option is preferable, but it is less cost effective.
As for the thickness of the profile, it should be more than 1.2 mm. If these dimensions are reduced, then the sheet material of the facade will fall out. Anodizing of the coating may also occur, which will require restoration.
The profile for wardrobes is also used for installing acrylic glass. However, with a decrease in the above-mentioned parameter of the components, bending of the material may occur even during installation. In order to bend the profile up to 1000 mm in radius, you will have to apply a fairly large force, which is approximately equal to 100 kg. Therefore, when using acrylic glasses, you must understand that after installation they will be in constant tension. The profile must be strong enough to withstand the high load.
Production of a radius cabinet
Radial wardrobestake up less space, and their interior space can be planned very efficiently. In the process of installing a piece of furniture, using a level and a pencil, it is necessary to mark on the wall the places where the vertical racks will be located. After that, the height of the shelves is marked.
Before you install the radius wardrobe, you will need to drill holes for the dowels. After that, you can proceed with the installation of the mezzanine shelf according to the markings. The next step will be the installation of the side profile. Next, you can start assembling the filling of the cabinet. Now you should install the false panels, which are fixed with a screwdriver to the floor, ceiling and side wall. The lower and upper profiles are fixed to the installed bezels.
Then they are engaged in the installation of the door. To do this, vertical profiles are attached to the sides. When installing a sliding wardrobe in the hallway with your own hands, you will need to strengthen the door seal, which can be made of silicone or rubber.
