Before proceeding directly to the description of various types of mastic and its characteristics, I propose to get acquainted with the main elements of buildings and structures where it can be used (roofs, walls, bases, foundations, etc.). The base is called the soil that is used for construction purposes; in other words, this is the place that contains the upper layers of the soil and on which the construction will be carried out. Foundations - this is the lower, underground part of the building, which is located at a certain depth. Waterproofing of the base or foundation is carried out using mastic, waterproofing is done in places where the basement wall and foundation are joined or in the corner between the basement slab and the floor slab.
The Importance of Roofing
But the main place where mastic is used is the roof. It is irreplaceable at roofing works. The roof is called the enclosing part of the building, protecting the structure from environmental influences, and it is also a load-bearing element. Despite their diversity, most of them require specialwaterproofing works, which belong to the cycle of roofing, which, in turn, are an important part of any construction process.
Various substances can be used as a waterproofing material, but bituminous mastic is the most common of them. In fact, a mastic roof is a kind of waterproofing carpet that can contain from 2 to 4 layers of this material.
What is bituminous mastic?
This is a mixture with a thick paste consistency, which consists of complex high-density polymeric materials. A subspecies is bituminous mastic. It is used in roofing. Bituminous mastic is intended both for the installation and organization of the roof, and for its repair. Representing a complex one-component bitumen-polymer composition, it is ready to use.
Application
Mastic bituminous waterproofing is used if the following is carried out:
- Roof installation.
- Repair and restoration work (filling cracks, etc.).
- Filling butt joints, i.e. those in which there is a butt joint of vertical and horizontal structural elements, as well as various shaped parts.
- Reliable sealing (protection against air and water penetration) of building shaped elements.
- Waterproofing of metal structures.
As for direct application, thenbituminous roofing mastic can be applied when its temperature is more than +15 degrees Celsius, and the ambient temperature is in the range from 10 to 50 degrees Celsius.
Often it is already ready for use, but in some cases it can be diluted with gasoline or toluene, but with the condition that their share will not exceed 20% of the total mass of the material applied to the roof. The mastic is applied with a special wide construction spatula or by spraying.
