Marburg textured wallpaper for painting is a striking type of wallpaper among the entire range of finishing materials. Their peculiarity is a combination of the positive characteristics of traditional rolled wallpaper and the possibility of painting with emulsion or acrylic paint.
They are suitable for gluing both walls and ceilings. Having pasted such wallpapers once, you can not think about selecting and buying new ones when it becomes necessary to make repairs. They can be repainted more than once.
The main advantage of structural wallpapers is a wide choice of materials of different textures (embossed patterns) that can be painted using different techniques.
Today we will try to understand the intricacies of choosing a material and understand how wallpaper is pasted for painting.
Wallpaper for painting: species diversity
Structural wallpapers are divided into three groups:
- duplex paper;
- non-woven;
- glass cloth wallpaper.
Choosing wallpaper for painting
They are easy to distinguish by color - they are always white and deeply embossedinvoices. Structural wallpapers are durable. They withstand a large number of repaints, while maintaining their aesthetic appearance. The optimal number of updates for paper wallpaper for painting (cheap) - up to 7, non-woven - up to 15, glass - up to 20. Service life - up to 30 years.
Structural Marburg wallpapers perfectly mask the unevenness of the walls, which, at a low price for a finishing material, makes them the preferred choice. Expensive wallpapers with a beautiful pattern in recent years are chosen only by those who are going to do designer repairs at home.
Features of paper wallpapers
Paper structural wallpaper consists of two layers: the first - paper, the second - with a special water-repellent impregnation that increases the wear resistance of the material. In addition, the waterproof layer allows you to do wet cleaning of the walls pasted over with them.
Features of non-woven wallpaper
Non-woven wallpaper shows a high level of adhesion with the surface pasted over by them, which not only allows you to hide the imperfections of the walls, but also give them additional strength. At the heart of the canvas of such wallpaper is non-woven fabric, on top of which a perforated foamed vinyl coating is applied. Such a coating is plastic, so gluing wallpaper on the wall is practically devoid of significant drawbacks. It is used for finishing new buildings and houses, which can shrink over time. The non-woven layer will not only not tear, but will not allow cracks to spread.
Features of fiberglass
The basis of the third type of structural wallpapermade of non-woven fabric, and fiberglass is used for the top layer (it is made from quartz sand with the addition of various impregnations). Hence the name - cullet or fabric wallpaper.
Fabric they are called because of the possibility of imitation of a textile texture: "canvas", "matting", "spider lines". The distinctive characteristics of glass fiber include high moisture resistance, fire safety properties, increased strength, wear resistance. It is the best option for finishing office and public spaces, cafes, hotels and boutiques.
Important! Fiberglass in combination with a non-woven backing is excellent for reinforcing walls and partitions constructed from foam blocks or drywall.
Generalized pasting rules
- Even if you don't need a ceiling finish, finish all surface preparation (plastering, priming, painting) before finishing the walls.
- Be sure to prepare the walls before pasting: plaster and prime the new walls, prime the old ones (from which the wallpaper has been removed). Gluing can only be started after 24 hours, when the primer is completely dry.
- Cut paper wallpaper panels with a margin of up to 5 cm from the bottom and top. Non-woven wallpaper is not always amenable to cutting, and fiberglass-based wallpaper is glued to the wall with the roll unwinded, and then cut off.
- The consistency of wallpaper paste for duplex paper wallpapers should be thicker than for simplex ones. Prepare the adhesivenecessary, strictly following the instructions.
- Too liquid glue will wet and soften the wallpaper, making it more vulnerable. In addition, heavy panels will not be able to stay on the wall and fall off.
- Non-woven and fiberglass wallpapers are glued with special glue.
- Since the wallpaper is glued end-to-end, work starts from the corner from left to right. Because the wallpaper is thick, the overlap will look unsightly, especially after painting.
- Glue corners should be given special attention. Finishing the corners, the wallpaper strip is glued so that it only slightly goes to the edge of the adjacent corner.
- The next panel is glued with an overlap. After attaching the wallpaper to the wall, draw a vertical marking strip in the middle of the double layer of wallpaper. Arm yourself with a ruler and a utility knife and cut the wallpaper along this strip, removing the trimmings and smoothing the seam.
- After finishing work, the joints of the walls with the ceiling and floor can be optionally decorated with a plinth and baguette, which perform not only a decorative function, but also help seal the joints.
Paper wallpapering technology
Working with two-layer wallpaper is no different from pasting with ordinary paper. Having smeared the canvas, roll it up with an accordion and let it soak with glue, setting it aside for a few minutes. While you wait, you can coat the next piece of wallpaper with glue.
When the wallpaper is saturated with glue, unfold it and paste it on the wall. Do not forget to smooth the canvas over the surface using a wallpaper brush, roller or gauze. Trim the rest of the wallpaper withconstruction or utility knife when dry.
Many people ask: "How long does the wallpaper dry for painting after gluing?" And experts have an answer to this question. It all depends on the amount of glue applied, but it takes at least 24 hours to dry completely.
Please note that when handling paper wallpaper, care must be taken: from an excess of glue, they can stretch, bubble or tear, sometimes when sticking too wet a canvas of paper wallpaper loses its relief. This is due to the fact that paper-based wallpapers are very delicate.
Technology of pasting with non-woven wallpaper
Non-woven - the best wallpaper for painting. This process differs from the previous one, and in comparison with other techniques, it has distinctive characteristics. Non-woven wallpaper does not have the disadvantages that are present in working with paper: they do not bubble, do not tear or deform.
Thin non-woven wallpaper is cut into strips, smeared with glue, left to soak with it. Sometimes both the wallpaper and the wall are coated with glue, but most often this is not necessary, and only the surface of the wall is covered with glue.
Glue wallpaper for painting (non-woven) looks like this:
- Glue is applied to a section of the wall slightly larger than the width of the wallpaper itself.
- Wallpaper is unwound from the roll and pasted on the wall. Pressing with a rubber spatula, cut along the plinth line. With this gluing technique, it usually disappearsthe need to smooth the wallpaper: they fit well on a flat vertical surface.
Glass-wall papering technology
Getting started, prime the walls with a colorless latex primer, as fiberglass-based wallpaper is quite transparent.
The method of gluing walls resembles the technology of finishing with non-woven wallpaper. The only thing that is different is the glue. For glass wallpaper, you need to buy a special adhesive designed for heavy types of canvas.
After gluing, when the glass fabric wallpaper dries, they are additionally covered with a layer of glue, over which paint is applied.
Important! It is possible to paint fiberglass only after the primer layer has completely dried.
Painting wallpaper involves the use of a special water-dispersion or latex paint. Using a tint color, it can be painted in any color.
Compared to other types of wallpaper, fiberglass-based wall covering has high strength characteristics. Walls with such a finish are not afraid of scratches or other mechanical damage. In addition, such wallpapers can be washed with a brush and detergent without fear of ruining them.
Painting wallpaper is not only practical and economical. This finishing material is easy to work with and can be applied in any technique, allowing the imagination to run wild.
