A leveling rail is an additional tool that allows you to perform geodetic work in construction, as well as used in geological or topographic research.
With the help of it, the differences in the heights of the terrain are fixed. The leveling rail is a rectangular plane with a scale placed on it, which is applied with a certain division value.
Varieties
There are four types of this fixture:
- wood rail with the possibility of unfolding;
- telescopic;
- fiberglass lath;
- high-precision invar.
Description
Modern products can be produced for digital and conventional levels. Reikidigital are used for levels that can read BAR codes that are applied to the surface of this device. With the help of such devices, the distance to the device and the difference in height are determined. Also, these devices have the usual graduation on the back, as a result of which they can be used as simple levels.
- Leveling rail, made of wood, folds in the center. The length of each section is approximately 1.5 meters. Wooden slats are heavier than telescopic ones. But on the other hand, they have a more reliable folding mechanism compared to the indicated analogue, which has a backlash in the mechanism fixing button. Such a leveling rail is a dielectric. This is true when working near open wires and high-voltage power lines.
- Telescopic leveling rail in a modern design is made of lightweight materials such as plastic or aluminum, which is very convenient to use due to its low weight. They have a round level, which makes it possible to put this device strictly vertically. Often used slats having a length of 3, 4 and 5 m. When folded, they have a length of no more than 1.5 meters. The scale on such products is applied on both sides (on one side there is a millimeter scale - for close work, and on the other - in the form of checkers for use at long distances).
- Fiberglass rod is used in work with a digital level. Like all of the above devices, it has a double-sided marking. From oneside, like a conventional level, on the other - a metric scale. Such a rail is made of a dielectric material called fiberglass. Therefore, it can be used near high-voltage power lines.
- Invar rails are used to perform high-precision terrain surveys. Here, the accuracy of determining the marks is no more than one millimeter. Its body is made of wood and covered with invar tape. These slats are made in lengths of 3 m. Due to their ease of use and light weight, they are in great demand.
Result
Now you know what a leveling staff can be. Topographers, cartographers, builders, miners know how to use it. However, anyone can learn this skill. Sometimes another name for this device is used - a construction rail, or geodesic. The price of such a product depends on its size and accuracy of divisions.
