The service life of the sewer system directly depends on the quality of its assembly. However, even its high-quality installation is not a complete guarantee of the absence of an emergency requiring urgent repair work.
When is sewer repair necessary?
We propose to consider situations with sewerage that require urgent intervention:
- blockage;
- pipe leaking at joints;
- cracking, accompanied by the spread of a rather unpleasant odor.
Clogging
The most common household problem is the clogging of the sink siphon, which occurs due to the accumulation of debris. Small blockages can be cleared with a plunger. This is done as follows: a plunger is installed above the drain hole and with a few vertical movements, the resulting debris plug is forced to move. Next, you need to remove the exit plug with water pressure.
Tube blockages and more serious ones happen. In these cases, instead of a plungercertain chemicals are used that are available on the shelves of almost all household chemical stores. In fact, they are solvents that break down corks. Before use, be sure to read the rules for their use.
If these methods were undertaken and the sewer was repaired, and the drain system still does not work well, it is necessary to look for a clog deeper. To remove it, you will need to use a punching cable, which is inserted into a hole in the riser provided in advance for such situations, or the junction of the sink with the drain.
Leaking pipes at joints
Sewer repair in this involves first of all finding a leak. One of the reasons may be the presence of a fuzzy connection at the border between the siphon and the drain hole, or between the pipe inlet and the siphon.
To fix the problem, examine the connection where the leak is observed, check the gasket (replace if necessary).
It is more difficult to repair the sewer if the joint is leaking between the parts of the cast-iron pipes. Its elimination depends on the method of connecting pipes. It can be lead or cement.
If the connection is cement, do the following:
- get rid of old cement using a hammer and chisel;
- get rid of the old stuffing, clean the gap;
- drill in a new layer of resin-coated caulk strands and cover with cement mortar.
If the jointminted with lead, sewer repairs are carried out in the following sequence:
- clean the bonding layer down to metal;
- make a new seal by hammering lead into the cracks with a blunt chisel.
Cracks in the pipe
The crack that formed on the pipe body is removed only for a while. During subsequent operation, it will inevitably increase, which after a while will lead to an accident. Therefore, it is better to immediately overhaul the sewer with the replacement of the pipe.
Temporary remedy depends on pipe material. If they are polymeric, the crack is carefully covered with sealant and wrapped with tape. This will get rid of the bad smell.
To eliminate defects in cast iron pipes, do the following:
- widen the crack and treat with a special degreaser;
- prepare a mixture of copper oxide and phosphoric acid (ratio 1.5 to 1);
- cover up the resulting crack with the resulting mixture. This must be done quickly enough, since the setting of the composition occurs very quickly.
