On the holidays in kindergarten and at school, the boys like to wear a hussar costume. The cost of rental outfits is quite high, and it is a pity to give a lot of money for one grand entrance in it. If you know how to sew, then it is not difficult to make such an outfit yourself. It consists of several elements:
- doloman;
- mentik;
- pants;
- boots;
- shako.
Let's briefly understand what it is. For a child, you can significantly reduce the outfit by sewing only a uniform jacket with epaulettes and a hat with a peak. Any dark or white trousers will do. Instead of boots, you can wear Czechs. For the assembly hall of the kindergarten, they will be more appropriate.
Hussar costume
Before sewing epaulettes with your own hands, you need to know what part of the clothes they are sewn on.
- Doloman is a strict uniform to the waist with rows of buttons on the sides.
- Mentique is an overcoat often worn on one shoulder. It is trimmed with fur.
- Hussars have different shapes. This andriding breeches, and tight pantaloons.
- Kiver is a tall hat with a visor, shaped like a top hat. Embellished with a central emblem or feather, chain or two-button gold rope that dangles from one end to the other.
Epaulettes for a boy's costume are sewn on both dolman and mentic, depending on whether they wear two of these items of clothing or only one.
From the article you will learn how to make epaulettes with your own hands. These are shoulder straps with fringe, which are often present in the outfits of hussars and kings. Usually it is they who attract attention with their bright colors, shine with gold or silver. Next, we will dwell on tailoring and the necessary materials to make your products elegant and spectacular.
We select a dense base
Do-it-yourself epaulettes are made using a solid base so that they stay on the shoulders evenly and do not sag. Some needlewomen buy real epaulettes in a military clothing store, cut off the excess length from a flat edge and sheathe it with fabric on all sides, leaving the buttonhole intact.
If you do not have such a store or a military friend with old shoulder straps, then use thick corrugated cardboard from an old box. It is better to cut out two bases for sewing an epaulette with your own hands on each shoulder according to the template, thereby further strengthening the density of the craft. It is recommended to glue them together with PVA glue.
Smooth edges of shoulder straps can beleave it as it is in the photo above, or you can attach or cut a rounding at the end of each blank.
Sheathing shoulder straps
A solid base, chosen for sewing an epaulette with your own hands, needs to be processed with a cloth and sewn with a silver or gold edging, you can use a colorful emblem in tone in the center of the craft. You can take any material, but if you are a beginner, it is more convenient and easier to work with sheets of felt. The color of the product should be in harmony with the overall outfit. It is better for a child to take bright colors, such as blue, red or yellow.
The photo above clearly shows how the cardboard base for the epaulette is sheathed with your own hands. When everything is trimmed with felt, a piping is attached along the edge, an emblem is in the center (you can do without it). Choose a button to match the trim and fringe.
Last finishing step
Do-it-yourself epaulettes for the hussar are sewn both on a sewing machine and by hand in its absence. A fringe is considered an obligatory element of these products. She does not need to sheathe the entire shoulder strap, but only its edge. If you made the base with a rounded edge, then fringe only this part of the craft.
Fringe can be purchased at a sewing accessories store, matching it to the color of the piping and buttons. In order for the beginning and end to clearly match on two products, before sewing, it is imperative to try on the child’s shoulder and mark the necessary points with a marker or chalk. It is advisable to choose threads of the same shade so thatno seams were visible at all. Any fringe is suitable, from twisted silk ropes or thread tassels, as in the sample above.
How to sew epaulettes with your own hands (a master class is given in the article), you already know, so you can easily cope with the task. They are sewn onto the uniform after trying on in such a way that the fringe hangs freely from the shoulders of the child. Strengthen it in two places along the seam of the jacket - in the neck and on the shoulder itself - with basting stitches. Epaulettes of the same color with trousers or a shako will look beautiful. Good luck!
