Rain and snow are the biggest enemies of any roof. Water flowing from the roof easily penetrates into the joints of the coating with chimney pipes and walls, having a negative impact on them. To prevent the destruction of the roof and the premature failure of the roofing material, an additional element such as an adjoining bar is used. What is its purpose, what types it is and how it is mounted, we will consider in this article.

Description

Abutment bar is a corner with different side sizes, made of galvanized steel sheet or remnants of soft roofing material. It is installed to protect the truss system from moisture.

This item is used on rectangular roof surfaces such as ventilation shafts or chimneys.

Depending on the installation method, there are two types of protective bar:

  • top;
  • lower.

Top bar fits intoat the junction of the pipe and the roof (from the side of the ridge) on the roofing material. Most of the plank is brought under the roof so that the water flowing down does not fall on the wooden crate and insulation material. The other end is attached to the pipe with self-tapping screws.

The second option (bottom apron) is installed at the bottom wall of the pipe (at the reverse break of the roof) and is laid directly on the roofing.

For decking made of profiled sheet and metal tiles, a steel product coated with a protective polymer layer is used.

If bituminous tiles or a roll coating act as a roof, then the joint can be made both from metal and from soft materials. In this case, the junction bar will look like a flat strip.

Now consider the installation process of all options.

What materials and tools will be needed to mount the bar

Before starting work, make sure that the following materials and tools are at hand:

  • measuring tool (tape measure, ruler);
  • hammer;
  • power tool (screwdriver, grinder);
  • pliers;
  • wood slats;
  • roof seal;
  • self-tapping screws, nails;
  • silicone sealant or bituminous mastic.

First, let's look at how the junction bar is installed in the case of using metal roofing material.

Installation processtop rails

The junction bar (upper) is installed as follows:

  1. In places of fracture (where the roof will join the pipe), a crate with a very small step is installed.
  2. The sheet that will cover the fracture is pushed out a little so that it closes the junction. A cornice strip is usually used as a connecting element. Between the sheet of roofing material and the connecting element, a special sealant is laid (intended for installation of additional roofing elements).
  3. Attachments to the wall are fixed with self-tapping screws. The height of the vertical part of the bar must be at least 50 cm. All edges are waterproofed with bituminous mastic or silicone sealant.

Installing the bottom apron

Now let's look at how the inner apron is installed correctly (the junction bar is the lower one).

Installation technology involves the following work:

  1. The height of the upper edge of the plank is marked on the pipe walls with a marker.
  2. After the place of fastening of the bar is determined, a special strobe is made in the brick wall (with the help of a grinder) (at least 15 cm deep). It will install the edge bend, located at the end of the plank adjacent to the wall.
  3. Please note that ditching between bricks is strictly prohibited! This may lead to a violation of the integrity of the pipe.
  4. The resulting channel is cleaned of dust.
  5. The vertical edge of the plank is placed against the wallpipes, leading the upper edge into the prepared hole. The installed element is fixed with several self-tapping screws. On all sides of the pipe, the strips are overlapped (by 15 cm) and treated with a waterproofing compound.
  6. Under the lower edge of the resulting structure, a flat metal sheet is placed (in other words, a tie), which is designed to drain water. He is sent to the valley or to the ledge.
  7. Next start laying the main floor.

Installation of an abutment strip on a soft roof

Soft roof itself is considered an excellent waterproofing material that does not require additional protection. Soft surfaces include:

  • shingles;
  • roll materials (eroruberoid);
  • polymer membranes;
  • mastic materials.

The junction of tiles and roll coverings is arranged as follows:

  1. Work begins with the installation of a triangular rail, which is needed in order to raise the edge of the coating. It can be made from an ordinary bar (with a section of 50x50), sawing it diagonally. The resulting counterslope will serve as a barrier to moisture.
  2. A layer of bituminous mastic is applied to the plastered wall.
  3. Next, the roofing material is installed.
  4. Protective strips are installed at the corner joint of the roof covering and the pipe (on top of the tiles). Usually, for these purposes, additional elements are used - valleys. The width of such a strip is 50 cm.
  5. The inner side of the valley is coated with a waterproofing compound -bituminous primer or silicone sealant.

The width of the strip adjacent to the wall should be about 30 cm. In regions with a harsh climate (where a lot of snow falls), this figure can be increased.

Helpful tips

  1. Before you start arranging the connections, pay attention to the thickness of the material used as the plank. It can be equal to the thickness of the main roofing, however, it is preferable to use elements no thicker than 0.5 cm, as they are more flexible and better take the desired shape.
  2. Curtains made in a brick wall must be thoroughly washed with water, as the remaining dust in them will prevent good adhesion of the silicone sealant and the base.
  3. Waterproofing compound should only be applied to dry surfaces.

In this article, we looked at how to properly install the junction bar. Photos and installation instructions will help you to perform these works yourself, which will avoid the cost of attracting qualified roofers.

We hope that we have answered all your questions.
