The main advantages of the tree are the absence of any toxicity, as well as the inability to cause allergies. These two qualities are highly valued when it comes to the manufacture of items for the interior design of the house. However, good wood species with high-quality processing have a rather high price. That is why the question of how to make a curtain rod for curtains with your own hands becomes relevant.
Types of products
Everyone knows that the cornice is designed for attaching curtains, but few are aware that there are two versions of this piece of furniture.
Today, there are two fundamentally different types of cornices according to their execution. The first option is wall-mounted, in which the fastening is carried out to the wall, and the second option is ceiling-mounted, that is, they are attached to the ceiling. Further, it is worth noting that wall-mounted product options most often have a round cross section. Much less often, but still sometimes a square section is used. Such cornices are usually made of plastic, wood and rarely metal. As for the ceiling version, itless popular, but still has its advantages:
- the design of such items is much simpler, it also becomes easier to mount them, and the mount itself is considered more reliable than the wall;
- this type of cornice allows you to hide the ugly part of the structure.
As for making a curtain rod for curtains with your own hands, the top priority option is the ceiling one, as it is more simple from a technical point of view.
Wall cornice option
It should be noted right away that this method is considered more difficult due to the complex mounting structure.
For the manufacture of such a product, you will need a wooden beam with a round section, which will play the role of a guide. The diameter of such a part should be in the region of 3-5 cm. As for the length of the part, it should be sufficient to close the window opening, and also protrude beyond its limits by about 15-30 cm on each of its sides. For example, if the window opening is 1 meter long, then the length of the timber should be 1.4 meters.
Calculations and materials
When making a curtain rod for curtains with your own hands, you need to know a few more nuances. Firstly, the curtain should be located at a distance of 10-15 cm from the window, and secondly, the distance between the mount should be no more than 0.6 m horizontally. From this we can conclude that for an opening of 1 meter, for example, at least 3 attachment points are needed. It is necessary to find out, since the amount of timber can be calculated, knowing the amountfastener points, as well as the distance from the window. To fix the cornice for curtains with your own hands, you will need a bar 315=45 cm.
This version is possible when the guide will be inserted into a beam with a large diameter. In this case, it is necessary to cut the middle of this element so that it forms a long ring. The width of the ring in the end should be from 5 to 10 cm, and the thickness of the wall itself should be from 1.5 cm to 3 cm. In addition to the basic materials, you will need tools such as:
- hacksaw, jigsaw, drill;
- glue for wooden surfaces;
- pencil or marker for marking;
- sandpaper and finishing varnish;
- measuring accessories.
Stages of making a cornice
The first stage in such a case is cutting wooden parts into blanks. A guide of the required length is cut off, rings and other fasteners are cut out, as well as legs.
Next, all wooden parts should be processed. For this, prepared sandpaper is used. It is necessary to remove all irregularities, roughness, etc. In addition, the blanks must be impregnated with a solution with water-repellent properties and primed. The part that will play the role of a guide can be immediately varnished.
The next step in making a do-it-yourself curtain rod from improvised means is the holder rings. For this, a prepared timber is taken, the diameter of which should be from 5 to 10 cm, depending onon the guide diameter. The main element is applied to it, and markup is done. According to the markings, using an electric jigsaw, cut out the middle so that a ring with the desired wall thickness remains.
Next, you can go to the mount. To do this, holes must be made in the wall where the mounting beam will be inserted. Marking is applied to the wall, and the hole itself must be made very carefully so that it does not crack. In order to protect yourself from such an outcome when attaching a cornice for curtains with your own hands, the photo of which will be presented, you need to carry out work using a drill and a fairly thin drill. It’s worth adding right away that this procedure is not fast, and therefore you need to be patient. After that, we can assume that the blank for mounting is ready and can be varnished and left to dry.
Completion of works
The last piece to be made is the "mortar". The element is quite complex. It must ensure the entry of a mounting beam with a diameter of at least 5 cm. To do this, you will have to make a hole in the element, but not through, with a diameter equal to the diameter of the beam. After these works, the "mortar" is immediately varnished. After this part dries, an anchor is screwed into the bottom of the hole, which must pass through. The hole itself cannot be varnished.
Assembling the eaves
Do-it-yourself curtain rods made of wood are assembled according to the following principle.
The cornice is assembled only afterhow all the previous steps will be performed. A mounting bar must be inserted into the rings, and it must be attached to them with glue. After the glue has completely dried, it is necessary to cut off the part of the timber that will protrude inside the ring. After that, the rings are put on the guide. The first must also be attached with glue so that the cornice does not "walk". Next comes the turn of stringing rings to hang the curtains. The finished structure is attached to pre-installed hubs. For a reliable connection, a large amount of glue is also used, which coats the parts.
Production of the ceiling option
To assemble a ceiling cornice for curtains with your own hands, you will need the following kit:
- rectangular wooden beam of rectangular type;
- furniture corners;
- self-tapping screws and varnish;
- electric drill;
- hacksaw and marking tools;
- metal type rails (best to buy).
Works begin with wood processing. As for the dimensions of this element, it is best to use it with a section of 100x10 or 100x20 mm. Its length should also exceed the length of the window opening, but already by 20-25 cm on each side. The bars are connected in such a way that in cross section they form the letter "G". For assembly, self-tapping screws are used, which are screwed along the entire length of the product joint, and it is also worth using furniture corners here, as they will increase strength. Finishedthe design is varnished or painted. You can do both. After that, from the inside, with the help of self-tapping screws, it is necessary to fasten the metal guides.
As you can see, the assembly and fastening of the ceiling cornice is much easier than the wall cornice, although it has a better design.
Roman shades
It's worth starting with fixing a cornice for Roman blinds with your own hands. There are three options - installation on the wall above the window, under the ceiling or in the opening itself.
- If we talk about mounting under the ceiling above the window, then one of the advantages is a visual increase in the opening in height. Most often, this option is chosen if the room itself is not too high. In addition, the curtain will cover the part of the wall that goes over the opening, which can also serve as a decorative solution.
- As for installation inside the opening, in this case it will be possible to maintain constant access to the window sill. Also, this option is considered very convenient if you need to use Roman curtains with ordinary curtains in a pair.
- Mounting on the wall is possible in two ways. The first option is installation perpendicular to the wall, that is, on the edge. For this, metal corners are usually used. In this case, the curtains will be at a small distance from the window.
- The second mounting option is parallel. In this case, the wooden cornice for curtains is attached flat to the wall with your own hands. The curtain will not be at a distance from the window sill, which is beneficial if itrather narrow.
What you need for assembly
In order to assemble a cornice for Roman curtains with your own hands, you will need the following set of materials and tools:
- You will need a board with a width of 4 cm and a minimum thickness of 2 cm. As for the length, it must correspond to the chosen width of the curtain. However, if we are talking about fastening inside the window opening, then it is better to take the board narrower and thinner.
- You need a piece of fabric that will match the color of the curtain or its lining. The width of the piece of fabric should be enough to wrap the cornice, + 2.5 cm. The length should be equal to the length of the board + 7.5 cm.
- To attach the cornice to the wall, you need to have metal corners.
In addition to the listed basic elements, you will also need screws, dowels, and a construction stapler. If this type of stapler is not available on the farm, then you can replace it with very small nails. If the curtain is heavy enough, then it is better to nail it directly to the cornice.
