Peat tablets are peat pressed into the shape of a small puck. As a rule, on the sides it is pulled into a very thin mesh made of natural material. At the top of such a "washer" there is a special recess where the seed is planted. Peat tablets are an easy way to plant seedlings of both ornamental flowers and vegetables. They also serve to root the leaves of some plants, such as violets. They are made from pressed peat with the addition of minerals and nutrients. Here's how to use them.
Peat tablets before use are placed in a special tray and soaked in warm water. Cold water is best not to use. Within five minutes, peat tablets swell and literally increase their size five times before our eyes. This material is ideal for germination. By the way, in addition to peat tablets, coconut tablets are also used, their properties are almost identical. They are excellent at retaining water, the seeds in them never suffer from fungus (the so-called "black leg").
So, you soaked the pills, waitedfive minutes to let them soak. Next, plant the seeds in special recesses, then cover them on top with a thin layer of peat (1-2 mm). Then put your tablets in a seedling box, preferably in electric propagators. These are special devices from
heated, covered with a special lid on top. You can use mini-greenhouses for seedlings. If you choose to use propagators, keep them plugged in at all times. This is necessary so that the bottom is warm and the seeds germinate faster. Only put on the propagator cover at night, and it is better to remove it during the day to provide the future plant with access to sunlight. Light bulbs can be used.
When the seedlings grow up, get stronger, you can transplant them into a large container, glass or pot. It is not necessary to remove them from the tablet itself, this is done together with the tablet itself so as not to harm the root system.
Now let's talk about what capacity is optimal for germination with subsequent picking in open ground. Peat pots are usually used for seedlings of flower or vegetable crops. What are their advantages over standard, clay and plastic ones? Peat pots are containers made from a special mixture, usually peat-wood or peat-cardboard. Peat for this is taken sphagnum milling, which is rich in useful substances. Among other things, chalk is also added in order to reduce acidity. Such pots have sufficient strength and do not containpathogens.
Choose quality products. A peat pot should have walls one to one and a half centimeters thick so that the roots can easily grow through its walls and bottom when planted in the ground. In the ground, it should decompose exactly in a month. The farmer does not need to remove the remains of the peat pot after harvesting. If it has not completely decomposed during this time, then you bought a low-quality product.
After you have filled the pot with special soil, sowed seeds in it, or planted an onion or cutting, cover it with a piece of glass or film on top. Do not forget to moisten the environment with growing seedlings. As the plants develop, space the pots further apart so that the roots, sprouting through the walls, do not intertwine with each other. The day before planting in the ground, water your seedlings to saturation.
