Decided to fulfill an old dream and make repairs in the house? And where without such material as drywall? With it, you can align all the walls in the house, make new partitions. Of course, the strength of the material is not very high, but for everyday use it fits perfectly. That's just one question at the initial stage can confuse the masters: which side to fix drywall? The fact is that its sides are painted in different colors. This is what prompts the idea that somewhere there is a catch and such staining is not without reason.

A little about drywall sheets

Building new partitions is not that difficult. Of course, if you make them from brick or cinder block, it will take a lot of time to make the base, then for the masonry, and then apply a layer of plaster. But drywall sheets allow the task to be simplified many times over. If there is no need to build a main wall, then this lightweight and relatively durable material can be used. Our article will tell you whichside fasten the drywall to the profile.

The main techniques for working with the material will also be described. The advantage of GKL is that with its help you can very quickly and efficiently level all surfaces - walls, ceiling. But which side to attach drywall to the wall and how to properly prepare? We will talk about this a little further. In addition, when using GKL, the heat and noise insulation of the premises increases. And most importantly, even a beginner can work with drywall sheets, as it is simple and easy to use.

Tools needed to work with GKL

Before starting work, you need to prepare all the tools for working with drywall. First you need to prepare a frame that is firmly fixed to the ceiling and walls during the construction of partitions. To carry out installation work, you need to stock up on the following tools:

  1. Level.
  2. Pencil.
  3. Thin rope or fishing line.
  4. Hammer.
  5. Plumb bob.
  6. Roulette.
  7. Construction knife.
  8. Scissors or a hacksaw for drywall (can be used for metal).
  9. Punch.
  10. Screwdriver.
  11. Square.
  12. Gypsum board grater.

It should be noted right away that a puncher is not always needed - only if the walls are made of concrete and it is impossible to drill holes in them with an ordinary drill. You can use in most cases a simple drill or impact drill, as well as a drill with plumage.

Materials forwork

The easiest way to fasten the GKL to the walls is to install it on a frame made of wooden beams. But it would be better if you use a drywall profile, its price is not very high. In specialized stores, it can be purchased at 40 rubles per linear meter and more. It all depends on what type of profile you need. There are two profile options in total:

  1. D - designed to form a plane for drywall fasteners.
  2. W - with its help you can perform the construction of a common frame of the structure.

In this case, each of the options can be divided into guide and support type. In the specifications, they are denoted by Latin letters U and C, respectively. Guide profiles are a common frame component. Its main difference is that it has smooth walls and a shape like the letter P. It is in it that the support profile is fixed. The latter is slightly ribbed, which allows for a significant increase in bending stiffness.

Profile features

And now consider the features of various drywall profiles. It is recommended to check the price in stores specializing in the sale of materials. The fact is that the cost varies, depending on what type of profile.

In the manufacture of the frame, the following materials are used:

  1. CD is a profile that performs load-bearing functions, has a size of 60x27 mm.
  2. UD is the element that carries the guiding functions. Its size is 28x27 mm, with its helpfixing the profile type CD.
  3. CW - refers to rack elements, necessary to create a wall frame. The profile is 50 mm high, and the width is represented by three sizes - 50, 75 and 100 mm.
  4. UW are guiding elements designed for use with CW profiles. The height of the element is 40 mm, the width, as in the previous case, is 50, 75 and 100 mm.

There are also reinforced versions of profiles, for example, marked with the abbreviation UA. This is an enhanced version of CW. It differs in that the walls of the profile are somewhat thicker. When erecting narrow partitions with a width of no more than 10 cm, it is recommended to mount UA and CW elements. If it is necessary to build a thicker wall, then UD and CD profiles must be used. In this case, on each side of the frame, two guide elements must be placed in parallel.

Which sheet to use?

But which side to attach drywall to the frame? We will answer this question a little later, as we need to deal with some more points. Most importantly, when buying a material, look at what color it is. For example, for the construction of walls and partitions in the kitchen, green GKL is best suited. The same is used in bathrooms and toilets. Green color means that the drywall sheet is moisture resistant. The sheet thickness should be 12.5mm.

What do you need when installing the frame?

When mounting the frame, it is necessary to use a crab and a direct suspension. Crab is a universal connector. In order to assemble all the elements into a solid structure, you need to use the so-called flea screws. They must have an endmade in the form of a drill. But fastening drywall to the frame must be done using self-tapping screws 3, 5x35 mm, in which the head is countersunk.

In addition, when building walls and partitions from drywall, you will need nylon dowels and self-tapping screws. With their help, you need to fix the frame on the walls and ceiling of the room. It will also require the presence of thermal insulation materials to fill the internal cavity of the created partition.

Installing the frame

The first step is to level the floor and adjacent walls. In other words, you need to prepare these surfaces for applying the finish. First, mark up on the floor surface. And be sure to consider all the nuances below. In most cases, the angles between adjacent walls are not straight. Especially in old houses. When marking new partitions, it is necessary to bind simultaneously to two walls located in parallel. In this case, you will be able to visually reduce the curvature of the room.

If you are building not only a partition, but also attaching plasterboard sheets to the walls, then first remove the frame around the entire perimeter, and only after that proceed with the installation of a new structural element. When drawing the first line on the floor, keep in mind that it will mark the edge of the guide element. To it, you must also add the thickness of the drywall sheet, putty mixture, as well as the finish coat.

Marking lines

Fortransfer of a line drawn on the floor to the ceiling, you must apply a plumb line. You will simplify the work if you use a laser level. Then you can start installing UW profiles. They need to be fixed on the ceiling and on the floor. After that, install the support posts - you make them from CW profiles. It must also be used in those places where it is planned to install a door or other opening.

First of all, fix the support posts on the lower profiles. The front side must be placed inside the openings. It is allowed to reinforce the supports with timber bars. They need to be inserted inside elements arranged vertically. Fixation is carried out using self-tapping screws. When you fix all the profiles, proceed to the fastening of the CW support elements. The first part is placed so that there is a distance of 550 mm from the bearing wall. The remaining parts must be fixed at a distance of 600 mm from each other.

Now you know what profile is needed for drywall and how to properly fix it on the walls. And now let's proceed directly to the installation of sheets on the frame.

Fixing and cutting GKL

In order to build the whole structure correctly, it is necessary to fix the GKL on the frame with high quality. Overall dimensions of sheets are standardized. They are 1200 mm wide and 2000, 2500 and 3000 mm long. In the event that the ceilings in the rooms are high, then at least two plasterboard elements must be placed vertically. The first sheet must be fixed near the main wall. Then be sure to remove the chamfer on the side. For thisyou need to cut 5 cm from the GKL with a special knife.

Do everything on flat and solid surfaces so that the sheet does not bend. Lay a sheet on the surface, on it with a pencil mark a line along which the cut should be made. Then, using a construction knife, you need to cut the material. Remove the top layer, and then combine this line with the edge of the hard base. And the drywall sheet breaks very easily after that.

It should be noted that the front side of drywall has the following properties:

  1. There are no factory markings on it. They are present only on the back side.
  2. The color with which the front side is pasted over, all side edges are also processed.
  3. A different composition is used on the front. It contains a lot of cellulose, which reduces the consumption of materials used in finishing.

Fasteners to the frame are made using self-tapping screws 3, 5x35 mm. First you need to fix the corners of the sheet, and then the middle part. The interval between the screws is 250 mm. It is not recommended to make the distance larger, but it can be reduced to 100 mm. Self-tapping screws need to be screwed in until the hats go deep into the sheet. In other words, they should not peek above the surface.

And a little bit about how to properly seal the seams on drywall. First, treat with putty to get rid of cracks. Nothing complicated, but you have to do all the work carefully. Then, when these areas are dry, you need toapply a leveling layer to the entire surface of the sheets. The entire wall must be perfectly flat. Only after that it is possible to apply the top coat - water-based paint, wallpaper or tile.
