If you live in a private house, and there is a garage on the site, it would be nice to have a beautiful and functional canopy in front of it. It will allow you to immediately kill two birds with one stone - you do not need to drive the car into the garage, neither the sun, nor snow, nor rain will fall on it. If everything is calculated correctly, of course. As a rule, a carport is a closed area that connects the house and the gate. By the way, it is worth noting that it makes no sense to put a capital garage for a summer residence, unless, of course, you live there most of the time.
Carport structures

The following types of designs can be distinguished:
- Closed - the most practical type of construction, since all walls are lined with polycarbonate or glazed. Some owners of suburban areas sheathe the walls with wood.
- Open - instructures have only a roof and vertically arranged pillars. Such canopies are able to protect the car from direct sunlight, wind, dust, snow, etc.
- Semi-closed structures - in them part of the walls is closed with a blank wall, sheathed with clapboard, panels, decorative crates. Sometimes openings can be closed with an awning or soft glass.
Canopy Roof Projects
When building a canopy in front of a polycarbonate garage, you can choose any project, the frame has practically no features. But here they are on the roof:
- Shed roofs are the simplest types of truss structures. You can use it in any climatic conditions, you just need to correctly calculate the slope. The optimal value is an angle of 15-30 degrees. Moreover, any roofing material can be used in the construction.
- Gable design is installed, as a rule, if you need to cover a large area. Sometimes it is used if you have to combine the type of roof with the house. Such a system is massive, it is somewhat more difficult to make it, but still, unlike a lean-to, it is more practical.
- Arched systems - may be relevant for various types of canopies. It is best to keep the distance from the lowest point to the highest point no more than 60 cm. And the distance between the lower and upper belts is 30-60 cm.
Roof materials
You can use anything as a roofing material for a canopy in front of the garage, it all depends on your desires and capabilities.
We offer you several options:
- Rooferoid or soft tiles are good options, but you will need to make a continuous crate for them.
- Profile sheets are attractive, cheap, can be used on single and double pitched roofs.
- Polycarbonate is the most demanded and popular material.
- Metal tile - rarely used, as a rule, if you need to combine a canopy and the main roof (made of a similar material).
Example of canopy construction
And now let's look at an example of building a canopy in front of a polycarbonate garage:
- First prepare the place for the poles. It is necessary to dig holes, their depth is about 80 cm. You carefully tamp the bottom of these holes, put up pillars and fill them with cement mortar. Check the vertical position of the elements. If necessary, shore them up with temporary props.
- Make mortgages in the garage wall or screw mensols. This will allow you to tie the entire structure to the garage.
- Next, align all the pillars with the top heads to the required height. From above, all supports must be connected with a good channel. This will strengthen the entire structure and keep the structure of the canopy from deformation even under heavy loads.
- Make farms on the ground and then install them on supports. It is recommended to maintain a distance of 1 m between them, no more.
Finally, you need to install the crate, on top of which the roofing material is mounted. Must be oninstall rubber gaskets on the crate. The edges of the polycarbonate must be screwed with thermal washers. Put aluminum plugs on the outer ends and seal them with tape.
