Despite the rapid development of modern technologies for the manufacture of finishing materials, in rural areas, lime materials are widely used to perform various construction and repair work. Such popularity of lime is based not only on its good coloring ability, but also on its excellent antiseptic properties.

It is these abilities of the material that effectively prevent the occurrence of fungus and the development of mold on the wooden surfaces of various buildings. Therefore, any owner should know the features of the use and preparation of lime dough at home.

Properties of matter

Lime is made by roasting and processing limestone, chalk, shell rock or other carbonate rocks. Roasting is carried out in special furnaces at a temperature of 1000-1200 ℃. In this case, the rock is converted into pieces of various types, which, after processing, turn into natural useful material. Moreover, such processing does not require the use of special catalysts and chemical active substances.

To the mainThe advantages of lime include the following positive properties:

  • high resistance to moisture;
  • ability to disinfect surfaces;
  • material versatility;
  • UV resistance;
  • neutral attitude to various dyes;
  • low cost.

Therefore, lime dough is used in various areas of the national economy.

Extinguishing matter

Quicklime is highly hygroscopic, so this natural material is almost never used in its pure form. Quenching it occurs as a result of the interaction of the source material with the required amount of water.

Depending on the type of quenching, the following basic compositions are obtained:

  • lime water in composition contains a small amount of the main component;
  • milk of lime is obtained with the same ratio of water and lime;
  • lime dough has the appearance of sour cream in density;
  • fluff is a powdered mixture.

Preparation of the composition can be carried out both at the construction site and at home, depending on the required amount of material.

The slaking technology is as follows:

  1. The quicklime substance is loaded into a prepared container.
  2. Then gradually pour cold water and slowly stir the composition. This is necessary to increase the activation of the process.
  3. Stirring the composition must be carried out until the reaction stops (hissing,release of air bubbles and heat).
  4. After the reaction is completed, the solution is left in the container for 40 hours.

Slaked lime is easily distinguished from the original material by visual inspection, as well as the absence of heat release, since it always has a cold state.

Technology for obtaining lime paste

In industrial conditions, the installation for obtaining this product consists of two working tanks:

  • extinguishing box;
  • creative pit.

Quicklime is loaded into the slaking box, and then it is spread in a layer up to 10 cm. Then cold water is added and the mixture is stirred for 30-35 minutes. As a result of this reaction, milk of lime is obtained, which is poured into a creative pit.

Excess water is removed from the pit. Dehydration of milk of lime occurs as a result of the removal of water through the wooden walls or the sandy bottom of the pit. After two weeks, the density of the lime dough reaches 1.35-1.4 kg/l. The moisture content of such a suspension should be up to 50%.

At home, lime dough can be obtained by dehydrating milk or diluting fluff with water.

Scope of the substance

Due to its properties, lime paste is widely used in construction and households.

In construction, the substance is used forthe following purposes:

  • preparation of binder solutions;
  • furnishings;
  • protect wooden surfaces from mold and decay;
  • producing plaster;
  • production of silicate blocks and cinder blocks.

In the household, lime paste is used to perform the following tasks:

  • preparing a solution to protect garden trees;
  • decrease soil acidity;
  • to protect garden plantings from rodents and harmful insects;
  • cooking food supplements for pets and birds;
  • for disinfection of outbuildings.

Always remember to put on protective clothing and gloves before spreading the lime paste. Even a slaked variety of a substance can have a harmful effect on human skin.
