Midges in the kitchen
Midges in the kitchen

Imagine the disappointment of the hostess when she discovers that midges have appeared in the kitchen! In her kitchen, which should be the standard of cleanliness, beauty and comfort! And now these small creatures are swarming there, silently hinting that she overlooked something somewhere, lost sight of it. These midges, in principle, are harmless. These are the very fruit flies to which such a serious science as genetics owes a lot. Moreover, they were the first living beings to make a suborbital space flight! But what about the hostess? After all, she is not a geneticist, and her apartment or house is not a scientific laboratory. Therefore, it is urgently necessary to find means and methods of how to destroy midges in the kitchen.

First of all, you need to arrange a literally wholesale search on it to look for rotting plant remains. Feeding on them, midges reproduce at a truly frantic pace (which is why geneticists fell in love with). Explore:

  • Stocks of fruits and vegetables long in storage. Damaged fruits must be "fixed" ordiscarded.
  • Open bags containing cereals, nuts, spices. If their contents are spoiled, such a product is sent to the trash.
  • Jars with compotes and jam. They should be tightly closed.
  • Presence of standing water. An abandoned glass, a kitchen sink, a pet's drinker, a flower pot tray - these are the places where water turns into a breeding ground for midges and from where hundreds of them appear every day. The drinker must be temporarily moved to a room where there is no food. Everything else is emptied.
  • Trash can. It should be taken out regularly and tightly closed with a lid.
  • Garbage grinder (if any). To clean it, use ice cubes and lemon zest. You can also use ammonia (240 ml): pour inside, wait an hour, rinse well.

The midges in the kitchen are very fond of breeding in the roots of indoor flowers, if any. And if suspicions of this are confirmed, the operation to destroy should begin.

  • Be sure to reduce the watering of the flowers. The absence of a moist environment prevents the rapid reproduction of midges.
  • Prepare a weak solution of potassium permanganate and treat all flower pots with it.
  • Stick a few matches into the ground where the flowers grow with a brimstone head. This folk remedy helps a lot.

After these measures, the source of reproduction of parasites, in principle, should be eliminated. The time has come when the midges in the kitchen, brazenly flying around it, must be irrevocably destroyed. The first method can becalled absolutely harmless, but slow acting. Prepare special traps for midges. Take a sheet of paper, make a funnel out of it, cut off its sharp end. At the bottom of a glass jar, put the bait in the form of a small piece of dried fruit or a small amount of fruit juice. After that, insert the cut end of the funnel into the jar.

Another trap is a disposable plastic cup filled with a wet tea bag or piece of fruit. The top of the cup must be tightened with cling film with several small holes.

Both traps are placed where you most often saw midges in the kitchen.

The second method allows you to get rid of midges quickly, but is associated with a "chemical attack". Using insecticidal preparations, it is necessary to process not only the kitchen, but also other rooms. After that, neither people nor pets will be allowed to stay in the apartment for several hours. The destruction of insects ends with thorough wet cleaning and airing. After all these activities, midges in the kitchen will never appear again. Unless, of course, you yourself “invite” them to a meal, leaving unfinished juice or a half-eaten apple on the kitchen table…
