Stoves and fireplaces can be made from various types of materials. But heat-resistant varnish will help to extend the life and preserve the appearance of these structures. Such a finish cladding must have fire-resistant and fire-resistant characteristics.

General data

Heat-resistant varnish, also fire-resistant, is a solution that does not support combustion. It includes organosilicon resins diluted in a solvent in its composition. Most often it has a transparent color, but sometimes impurities are added to obtain the desired shade.

Use it for processing various types of surfaces, including brick, stone, metal, ceramic tiles, plaster. In some cases, they are also used to cover wooden bases.

Heat-resistant lacquer adds shine and retains its original texture and color. Protects against fire and destruction of the facing layer.

Why do you need to varnish stoves and fireplaces

At temperatures above 80°C, dust sublimes, and harmful substances are released. To maintain the cleanliness and environmental friendliness of the environment inside buildings, paint and varnish solutions are used, facilitating the care of fireplaces and stove structures. It is also recommended to make structures with simple geometric shapes, which prevents the accumulation of fine dust particles in the kinks. These measures help to avoid harmful consequences, and also facilitate the maintenance of structures. It is much easier to remove dust and dirt from the varnished surface. In addition, the risk of fire is reduced.

Varnish options should be considered.

Varnish KO-85 - specifications

This solution is based on polyfinylsiloxane and polybutyl methacrylate resins. This heat-resistant varnish has the following advantages:

  • Can operate in sub-zero ambient temperatures.
  • Gives surfaces enhanced water resistance even with a single coat.
  • Resistant to high temperatures. In the process, the protective film does not burst, does not slip.
  • Withstands temperatures from -40 to 300°C.
  • Used to process not only the masonry itself, but also the seams, which also prevents the destruction of structures.
  • High drying speed - up to 30 minutes. Depending on environmental conditions. The recommended temperature is +20°C.
  • UV resistant.
  • High refractory properties. Does not support combustion.
  • Durability, retains its properties for 20 years.
  • No strong odors. After complete drying, they disappear completely.

As you can see, KO-85 varnish has the required characteristics in order tofor use in harsh environments.

Lac-815 - specifications

This solution is based on polyphenylsiloxane and glyptal resins.

After drying, it has the same properties as the previous composition, but it has a number of differences:

  • The hardening time of one layer is from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Complete hardening occurs after the surface is annealed at a temperature of +150°C.
  • Withstands higher operating temperatures - up to 350°С. Such a heat-resistant varnish for ovens is suitable like no other. It can also cover the furnace zone, since it has greater heat resistance.
  • Withstands temperature extremes from -40 to 350°C.
  • The service life of these coatings is up to 15 years.

Some characteristics have been changed for the better. Some features are controversial, such as a longer setting time.

Silicone enamel

The basis of such products is lacquer-85 or 815, but with the addition of aluminum powder. Given the characteristics, we can highlight the advantages that such enamels have:

  • Resistant to sudden changes in temperature. Withstand range up to 60°C.
  • Water resistance, which is characteristic of the varnishes underlying the composition.
  • Resistant to aggressive environments. Do not change color when exposed to ultraviolet radiation.
  • Large range of colors.
  • Can be used from -20 to +40°C.
  • High anti-corrosion properties.

Howit can be seen that organosilicon enamel retains almost all the positive properties of its bases.

Therefore, such mixtures are widely used both in industry and in private construction. Most often they are used for outdoor work. If application is carried out indoors, respiratory protection should be provided.

Application areas

Any organosilicon varnish is used to cover the outer surface of stoves and fireplaces in residential premises, as well as in baths and saunas. Moreover, it can also be used for outdoor stoves, barbecues. This allows the waterproof and refractory characteristics of such products. Moreover, the described varnishes are often used for outdoor work, because they are resistant to ultraviolet radiation, and at the same time they are not afraid of direct precipitation.

Although this lacquer was developed for the fireplace and stove as an option for exterior and interior decoration, it is often used for other materials. This is wood, plaster, concrete, stone. It should be noted that such compositions are still positioned as a heat-resistant varnish for metal. They perfectly protect surfaces from corrosion. Therefore, they often cover the metal parts of stoves and fireplaces.

These solutions are used as modifiers in alkyd, acrylic and other compounds, which gives them some of the advantages, including resistance to aggressive environments.

Heat-resistant lacquer-85 is used as a base for quick-drying enamel KO-814.

And the product marked 815 is the basis of refractory enamel 813. These solutions and their derivatives are used in the treatment of oil pipelines, machine mechanisms, car parts operating at elevated temperatures.

Technology of work

It should be understood that, as with any finish, the surface is prepared before coating. Thoroughly clean from dirt, dust. Metal parts are degreased. It is recommended to prime the base before finishing. Next, prepare the paintwork for application. Silicone varnish is thoroughly mixed until the formation of bubbles stops. You can do the work with a brush, roller, pneumosprayer.

The first layer is applied. Give time to dry. In the case of varnish-85, it will take only 20-30 minutes to wait. For coatings marked 815, the curing time is from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the ambient temperature.

It is recommended to apply up to 3 layers. It should be noted that lacquer-815 completely hardens at 150°C, so baking will be required.

The total film layer should not exceed 40-50 microns. If this indicator is exceeded, there is a risk of cracking the coating.

Recommendations for selection

In fact, the market is not limited to the above compositions, there are others.

For example, latex, acrylic, polymer. When choosing a solution, the following data should be considered:

  • Location of the object to be processed. Will it be indoors or outdoors. Or maybe a bath or sauna. Depending on this, attention should be paid to moisture resistance, UV resistance.
  • The temperature to which the product, design will be exposed. Pay attention to the permissible operating temperature range of paintwork.
  • Presence of odors, setting speed.
  • Material to be protected. Pay attention to the adhesion of solutions with one or another base. You may need to purchase a primer that is compatible with both the substrate and the coating mortar.

If you choose the right paint and varnish composition, it will be able to provide surface protection from various factors for a long time.

In favor of heat-resistant varnishes, we can say that they are made in accordance with state standards, which means they are fireproof. This is one of the main qualities required when finishing stoves, fireplaces.

So, we found out what heat-resistant varnish is.
