Many of us have heard of the concept of waterproofing. Often it can be found at the mention of construction. What is pipe waterproofing? It represents the protection of the pipeline from the effects of water. To date, there are various options for both the material and the purpose of communications. In each of them, in order to increase the duration of operation, it is necessary to select suitable waterproofing components. The choice depends on many factors.
Where does it apply?
In practical use, all piping must be insulated. At the same time, pipe waterproofing is used for the following types of systems:
- Heating.
- Ventilation.
- Air conditioning.
- Water supply.
- Sewerage.
- Water disposal.
- Smoke extraction.
Types of waterproofing materials for pipes
There are many of them. Among the main types, the following can be distinguished:
- Heat shrink tape.
- PVC tape.
- Rubber sheet.
- Insulation
- Waterproofing mastic.
Heat Shrink Tape
This material is presented in the form of a film tape. What is a pipe waterproofing device? A hot-melt layer is applied to it, which improves the adhesive properties. Most often, this design is used to protect pipe joints. The tape prevents corrosion that can occur during welding. It is also used for the repair of polyethylene pipes. But here there is one condition, which states that it is impossible to insulate joints that are exposed to high temperatures in a constant mode. The disadvantage of the tape is considered to be high sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, it cannot be stored in the sun. Among the advantages, one can note the preservation of properties at various temperature extremes, being in the composition of environmentally friendly raw materials, water resistance and plasticity.
PVC tape
It is made of polyvinyl chloride, and glue is applied on one side, which makes it easier to install.
The purpose is to protect pipes from corrosion, which very often appears during the installation of gas and pipelines. But recently, such waterproofing of pipes is increasinglyfinds its distribution in the repair of various structures. The material is produced in rolls, which are wound on a reel. If the integrity of the package is violated, then moisture can get there, which will have a bad effect on the properties.
Rubber sheet
Usually used in sanitary facilities, underground, and for insulating foundations and basements. Excellent water repellency and can be used to seal the joints of pipes that transport oil. Among the advantages it is worth noting elasticity, durability, strength, non-toxicity, UV resistance, the ability to use at different temperatures. You can store rolls only in conditions where there is no precipitation and the surface does not heat up above 50 degrees.
Izol
The material is waterproof and durable, and it finds its application in the waterproofing of heating networks. It is produced in rolls and has several modifications. All of them differ in composition. The material is mainly intended to eliminate corrosion of metal surfaces. Among the shortcomings, the most basic can be distinguished - this is low resistance to an aggressive environment. Among the advantages noted are good adhesion, work at high temperatures, waterproofing characteristics, elasticity and long service life.
Waterproofing mastic
This material is a mixture of tar and bitumen, which has additives of mineral fillers. Mastic is quite easy to work with and is applied with a brush or roller. After hardening, it forms a seamless coating, whichhas been used for pipe insulation for a long time. To improve properties, it is usually applied in several layers, each of which covers the previous one only after complete drying.
Methods for applying waterproofing to the surface of the water supply
Modern methods involve the use of plastic components and operational technologies for their application.
In most cases, these materials are soft materials that have good plasticity, waterproof and resist the aggressive effects of liquids. By type of application, three main methods can be distinguished:
- Okleynaya. Waterproofing of steel pipes is carried out by gluing surfaces with material.
- Coating. With this method, hot or cold bituminous coating is used.
- Coating and pasting. This is a combined method. It includes wrapping with mesh material and smearing with mastic.
Why can't a chimney be left unsealed?
The chimney, which removes all unnecessary combustion products, is usually hot during the process. Moisture that may fall on it evaporates, and in doing so, pressure is created that prevents traction. This process may cause the chimney to fail.
The second reason is the appearance of condensate in the pipe itself. It can occur due to temperature differences, accumulates on the walls andflows down, while creating pressure again.
To prevent such phenomena, competent waterproofing of pipes is provided today. This procedure includes a set of measures that prevent the penetration of moisture. After all, only protected chimneys will ensure your safety when using heating devices, increase the flow of heat and will be distinguished by a beautiful appearance.
Nuances of waterproofing processes
When you equip a chimney, the waterproofing of a metal pipe is considered an important point. The safety of operation of all heating appliances depends on how correctly you do it. When installing, you need to consider a few key points:
- The distance between the roof and the rafters must always be respected. For a roof made of combustible components, it is from 15 to 30 cm, and for non-combustible - from 10 to 25 cm.
- Roofing cake, which consists of hydro-, vapor barrier and insulation, should not be broken. If the opposite happens, then moisture will get inside.
- The gap must be made in the form of a box that will separate the roof from the pipe. It is made of a cross beam and rafters. The distance between the pipe and the box should be 15 cm. The space inside is filled with thermal insulation, and the vapor barrier is fixed with a special frame. The waterproofing of the pipe on the roof is pressed against the crate at the same time. All joints are sealed with special tapes.
Method of carrying outwork to protect the chimney from moisture
Waterproofing of the chimney will be carried out in several stages:
- Waterproofing layer is laid on the drainage gutter, which will remove moisture.
- An apron is mounted inside, which will ensure the sealing of the junction.
- Next, the tie is laid. This is a design that is cut out of waterproofing material and set aside under the bottom edge of the apron. It reaches the edge of the roof and is removed between the lower incisors of the coating. A rim is usually left along the edges, which directs the water down the slope and prevents it from spreading over the roof.
- Roofing is laid around the pipe.
- A decorative apron is arranged over the roof. If all processes are followed correctly, then you will get an excellent design that will serve you for a long time.
