Gardeners, enthusiastically engaged in the cultivation of grapes, probably know the name of the Russian breeder A. V. Burdak. He has bred many interesting hybrid varieties of this berry, among them is the still little-known, but already popular with gardeners, Sicily grapes.
Features of the variety
It is characterized as a table berry, as the berry is great for cooking culinary dishes and homemade wine.
The Sicily grape variety is resistant to many diseases, including fungal, oidium, white rot.
While it is being tested and actively grown in the southern regions of Russia, as it can withstand frosts down to -23 degrees. The hallmarks of Sicily grapes include the following:
- forms a fast growing bush with a powerful rhizome;
- large clusters of cylindrical shape appear in large numbers, ripen around mid-August (115-125 days), have a weight of 0.800 to 1.5 kg;
- light yellow elongated berries - large, up to 6 cm, with crispy sweetpulp (although a slight sourness is still felt), a pronounced taste of nutmeg, with one or two seeds and a dense skin.
Caring for grapes
Sicily is not particularly demanding on planting and care conditions. However, a few rules for obtaining high annual yields should still be followed.
- When planting, exclude clay soil, as well as with a high s alt content.
- Shading optional - Sicily thrives in full sun.
- This grape loves moisture, and therefore you need to constantly monitor the condition of the soil, even in a temperate climate.
- During the period of bunching, it is recommended to carry out their rationing, which will ultimately increase the yield.
- Autumn pruning of fruiting lashes is necessary.
Possessing excellent taste qualities, Sicily grapes are well transported and look great on the festive table, thanks to which it has every prospect of becoming quite popular among both professionals and amateur gardeners in the near future.
